Achari Mahan

Return to The Harbinger Syndrome

Creator: WeepingWisteria
Roleplay: The Harbinger Syndrome
Nickname: Achari

Name: Achari (uh-car-ee) Mahan
Age: 27
Pronouns: She/Xe
Sexual/Romantic Orientation: Omnisexual (Primarily attracted to women)

Personality: Achari is a permanently tired, caffeine-addicted busybody, dedicating most of xer life to xer job. She's been jaded by her career as a mortician, not to the point of complete hopelessness, but not many things can rattle her. Xe has seen everything... and gets paid 30k a year for it. Due to her busy nature, she has abandoned all pretenses of social life and committed fully to her trade. Xe struggles with setting boundaries with xer work and often takes what she can home (she can't precisely carry bodies back and forth but has a briefcase full of paperwork for funeral directors.) Many people have wondered if it was a trauma response or an addiction, but no. Achari doesn't like to be idle, and when she can't work, you'll often find her fiddling with something or doing a puzzle. When interacting with her two assistants or the funeral directors who make her money, she tends to be logical and short, cutting to the point and trying to find the most efficient way to achieve their collective goals. Xe is not who you want for a morning coffee break, but when it's ten am, and you have five bodies and a moon funeral, you're glad to have her.
Appearance: Achari is black, paled from hours spent inside and primarily nocturnal hours. She's average height at about 5'6" and xer eyes are brown. Her hair is black and curly, but xe often keeps the style of "bedhead chic," so it's usually a tangled mess. Xe has purple highlights xe tries to keep up with but is often grown out. Despite the lack of hair care, peer pressure from her college days, and hours spent in the morgue, she has developed a sort of dark academia aesthetic consisting solely of turtlenecks, long overcoats, and stiff pants. Many have questioned how xe has survived Atlantan summers, but xe shrugs and talks about the benefits of never going outside. The photo above is a Polaroid from her college days. Xe hasn't changed much.
Ability: Pheromones
Ability Strengths: People are less offended by her antisocial tendencies, and she has not suffered a single mosquito bite since the vaccine!
Ability Weaknesses: Insects. Insects everywhere. They're in xer apartment. In xer morgue. Everywhere. They won't leave. Ants. Mosquitos. Flies. How does she turn it off? Send help.
History: Achari's mother had xem through an anonymous sperm donor. She was Dr. Sonia Mahan, a renowned entomologist who worked in Australia. She was also famously a workaholic, so Achari spent most of her life in rural Georgia. School never felt stimulating enough, and the quiet country life felt more like a punishment than a reprieve.

As soon as xe graduated high school, xe wanted to enroll in college, into something cheap but thrilling enough to keep xem occupied. She stumbled onto mortuary science after discovering how little schooling it needed. And besides, the constant need for precision sounded like a dream. She majored in funeral service education at Ogeechee Technical College and served her two-year apprenticeship. Due to xer unwavering dedication, she took over the morgue after her mentor retired. Since then, xer work has been consistent. Even before the Quarantine, a lot of people died in Atlanta.

Xe used to keep in contact with her mom and her grandparents. Her grandparents had semi-monthly to tell them all about the city and xe meets with xer mom once a year for lunch or dinner to talk about the various bugs of Australia. A shame about the Quarantine: she would have loved to hear about the insects following Achari.
Where you during Quarantine?: Xe was always in the morgue. There were a lot of bodies that night. The whole team had to spend the night to keep the body count at freezer capacity.
What is your stance towards FEDRA?: Achari doesn't usually get involved in such things, but it's hard to separate the fact that a busy season in the morgue means too much death in the street.

Other: Achari has a basket of fidget toys in their living room and an abandoned bookshelf of crossword puzzles. Xe tried sports in high school but swore it off after the "incident."
