Leave small hints then. You don't have to describe everything to the spec, you just need enough to make the reader go "Oh! Ok. Fair enough! Now, about that action?" ...

Also, as a reference, read Joe Abercrombie's series - The first law. The guy has a brilliant way (from my pov) of describing and introducing characters, among other things.
