i've been told that many people say that i am a "good writer". while those compliments are flattering and the support means a lot, i've always questioned,
"What makes a good writer?"
if youve got any comments or opinions for this question feel free to comment down below. ive always wanted to see other people's views.
Mea To me, a good or at least competent writer is someone who can tell an engaging story from beginning to end. While the genres and tropes readers like are very subjective, in general you can tell if a book "works" or not by whether its plot and pacing hold together, and if it fulfills on the promises it made to the reader at the beginning of the story.
I think fulfilling the promises made to the reader is the most important part of storytelling and a really good concept to be aware of. Basically, when a reader picks up the book, the beginning sets their expectations for that book - is it romance, fantasy, mystery, is it likely to have a happy ending, what kind of story is this? That's why a lot of the time you need to edit the beginning the most. And to be a good book, and for the writer to be a good writer, they need to deliver on those promises (although sometimes pulling off a big reversal of them can work too.)

coehl @Mea interesting and i do agree with you. I don't think I'd be satisfied with reading a terrible beginning and then having a decent ending follow up with it. I'm just asking this since I'm planning to add some short stories into my stuff and I want to be aware of what some other people would think of a good story would be. Thanks for your reply!

Hi guys it's been a year since ive been on here and i kinda miss it. the reason why i wasnt on for a year is because i eventually got bored, got overwhelmed with school, and just found myself saying that i have no use here. also i happened to forget my YWS password lol
but anyhow thatll change, im going to try to upload just a small amount.
