Let us now acknowledge
the truth – between the two of us,
you’ve been laughing at me all along
haven’t you?
Oh don’t deny it
just to spare my feelings.
I’m intelligent enough to know
when I’ve been made a fool.
Here I am
wearing my heart on my sleeve
thinking I’m so clever
so superior to you -
and there you are
hiding in plain sight
beneath a shallow mask of lipstick
and toothy smiles;
a smokescreen that it would take
so little effort to penetrate.
But arrogant as I am, I believed
I could see all of you; that
there were no hidden depths
no undiscovered veins of
intellectual gold
beneath your made-up skin
and your skimpy clothes.
I took you at face value
and I apologize.
I always did
overlook
the obvious.
