A picture's worth a thousand words
is what they say, or so I've heard.
But think of myth, of ancient scripture
a word can paint a thousand pictures.

"Beauty" to some is a pretty face,
to others, nature's quiet grace;
to some it's shallow, just skin-deep
or a child's face far-gone in sleep

what might hurt you will pass me by
what makes some laugh makes others cry,
what I might love, you may abhor,
words make peace and words wage war

A picture's worth a thousand words,
is what they say, or so I've heard--
but words forever leave their mark
to make anew or break apart.

Wow, Spyndlethread, this is fantastic! It was absolutely a delight to read. The rhyme scheme was easy and the poem rolled right off the tongue, as it were. This poem expresses a thought I have had, and probably many other people have had, too, several times, but have not been able to put into words.

Is there are reason that the punctuation and capitalization fades as the poem goes on? If so, keep it. If not, I might recommend being consistent in your choice, although it's completely up to you.

Last thing: in the fourth stanza, "worht" should be "worth." Just a little typo.

Excellent poem, and keep writing!

This is a really good poem! Nice, short, sweet, and simple. It has a brilliant point. I've never thought of that. The only thing that you need to change was in the last stanza. Just a simple typo, but that is supposed to be "worth".

a picture's worht a thousand words

a picture's worth a thousand words

Also, I would suggest capitalizing every new line or at least every beginning stanza.

Otherwise, I loved it! :D

I loved this, it was very well written, and it had a strong message. Something all poetry should have.
The only part I found I didn't like was the last sentence. The last sentence should be strong and final, but this sentence read as awkward to me. Anyways, cheers, this was very good.

Very nice poem, I totally agree with you.
The rhyming scheme is flawless in my opinion, and I loved some of the lines.
You deserve a much better review for that, but all I can do is this, sorry.

Great Job!

Hello, Spyndlethread!

Wow -- you write rhyming poetry exceptionally well!

"Beauty" to some is a pretty face,
to others, nature's quiet grace;

Beautiful, beautiful. "Nature's quiet grace" is lovely, and not once is the rhythm disrupted.

to some it's shallow, just skin-deep
or a child's face far-gone in sleep

I love how the last line sounds -- so mysterious and misty, sort of!

what might hurt you will pass me by
what makes some laugh makes others cry,
what I might love, you may abhor,
words make peace and words wage war

I know I'm saying "love" a lot now -- but I looove this stanza. "Abhor" is a fabulous word, and this is all so true -- I haven't felt like you put words in just for the rhyme, as I often feel with rhyming poetry.

A picture's worth a thousand words,
is what they say, or so I've heard--
but words forever leave their mark
to make anew or break apart.

Great ending as well, it brings it all together and manages to leave with a bang and fade to black at the same time!

I guess I can't tell you enough how impressed I was by the fact that you rhyme well, pace well, and manage to keep up a story in the background -- that's extremely admirable, as rhyming poetry is one of the most difficult genres of writing there is. Really well done, you've deserved a gold star for this!

Hello there, I shall be your reviewer today! Alright so when I read your first two lines I was a little dubious as we've all heard the cliche and you never know what to expect with poetry on YWS. Your third saved you from losing my attention though and I'm glad it did. This is a very nice poem. Okay then, so I'll give you some line-by-line comments as that's just the way I work...

A picture's worth a thousand words
is what they say, or so I've heard.
But think of myth, of ancient scripture
a word can paint a thousand pictures. [I'm not sure about the repetition of thousand here. Okay so you've pointed out the cliche and you've run with it but let's steer away a little here and you a more creative word, a word that actually does start to paint a picture ;) Also, good word with the half rhymes, they're nicely used.]

"Beauty" to some is a pretty face,
to others, nature's quiet grace;
to some it's shallow, just skin-deep
or a child's face far-gone in sleep [Okay you're working well with the rhythm and this has a really nice, lilting sound to it. I like the last line a lot. The second could perhaps use some work though.]

what might hurt you will pass me by [Consider using some punctuation in this line as it took me two reads to follow what you're saying. I'd suggest: 'What might hurt you, will pass me by']
what makes some laugh makes others cry,
what I might love, you may abhor,
words make peace and words wage war [Okay peace and war, so we saw that one coming but it's nicely put even so and back to the half rhymes, very good. They flow a lot better than full rhymes because they're more subtle and less glaringly obvious.]

A picture's worth a thousand words,
is what they say, or so I've heard-- [I'm liking the repetition here! Very nice to bring it round in a circle.]
but words forever leave their mark
to make anew or break apart.

Okay so a good ending and all in all this is a really lovely poem! It's light and whimsical, while still touching on serious points. It flows beautifully and I don't have much criticism. Thank you for the read,

Hi there!

All right, my comments are in #BF0000 ">red below.

I really enjoyed this poem! My favorite part was definitely the end, not because it was over though! The last stanza is very powerful and almost matches the intensity of the whole poem in four lines. Your imagery and emotions are great.

Overall this is a really good poem. Keep writing! :)
