Greetings upon ye

Hey =)

My name is Fabian, and I really love writing. It's just incredibly hard to start all over again after a long stint of not writing. I'm struggling with that right now.

Anyway.

My forum name is Old English for "people-king." (Minus the thorn character, which I have not used because it'd get frustrating looking it up on Google whenever I want to log in.) I'm obsessed with Old English, and want to do a full translation of Beowulf one day. I just find it fascinating how this enormously flexible language we use today started as a gnarled, twisted, grammatically complex merging of tribal dialects from about 1500 years ago.

Other than that, I'm into German, Dutch, Swedish... Germanic languages in general. Grammar obsessed. Into metal, web design, game modding, and social sciences. Not much into maths and hard sciences.

As to reading/writing, I love fantasy. It's my genre of choice, although it's becoming increasingly difficult to find fantasy books worth reading. I'm currently working my way through the first book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, and it's ... wow. So harsh and dark, and yet impossible to put down. I'm also into certain Sci-Fi books (China Mieville's stuff, first and foremost) and lit fic. I really, really don't like Tolkien.

I'm 18, and from Romania... And I guess that's how this post is concluded.

Ooh! I am reading a translation of Beowolf now, by Heaney. My professor says it's one of the best translations out there because it primarily uses English words to express its meaning instead of Latin words. He says it better conveys some of the nuances in the languages.

Anyway! You should probably bug Meshugenah about some of those Old English things. She's pretty obsessed with Chaucer and the like... though I am pretty sure that Chaucer is more Mid-English than anything. Ooh, and bubblewrapped might be one to bug about Beowolf.

Fantasy books are hard to find that are good! But, we have some really good stories in the fantasy sections on YWS, so you should go check those out! We also have some stories there that... ah... need help, but I'm sure that you can help them. Personally, I like fantasies that have a more mythological tilt to them. I've been recently obsessed with the "Shahnameh: The Persian Book of Kings" so that is a really guilty pleasure of mine... but it's really nice.

And I'm glad that you're into linguistics, lol. I am more involved with the hard sciences and I can say with certainty that I would suck with any sort of language. Well... maybe just Spanish and English. Maybe.

AND. I DON'T LIKE TOLKIEN EITHER! We should start a fan club. Though, I love the Lord of the Rings movies...

Chaucer's English is Middle English, a blend of Norman and Old English. The grammar is pretty understandable though; the nouns lose their declension system save for the genitive (which adds an -s or -es) and the dative (with its -e), the plural conjugations for verbs are the same (different from OE which added -ath for present verbs and -on for past), and so on.
