Prologue
“Your Highness!” A young page with flaming orange hair dashed into the tower room. The queen and the tiny princess looked up at him.
“Hi, Taro!” The princess said. She smiled brightly at him. He would’ve smiled back, had he not been carrying grave news.
“Your Highness, Maverick’s forces have broken into the castle! We’ve got to run!” Taro cried. The queen stood up, her long blonde hair blowing in the wind.
“I was afraid this would happen.” She muttered. “Take Ambyr to Valentine Nazarath. Tell him.....it’s time.”
“But Mommy...” The princess looked up into her mother’s face.
“Don’t worry, dear.” The queen gently leaned down and kissed the top of Ambyr’s head. “You’ll be alright. Here, take this.” She took off a necklace around her neck and put it on her daughter. “Keep that safe, okay? It’s very important.”
“What about you, Your Highness?” Taro asked, putting an arm around Ambyr.
“My fate will be the same as my country.” The queen said firmly, looking out the window at the coming invaders. “Both of you, go. Escape while you can.”
“Mommy....” Ambyr gave a soft whimper.
“Come on, we’ve got to go.” Taro gave her a gentle squeeze. “Don’t worry, Ambyr....I’ll protect you.”
“....Okay.” She said. Taro took his hand off of her shoulder and she grabbed his hand. They ran out of the room and down the stairs. Ambyr’s hand was shaking, and Taro knew she was petrified.
Calm down, Ambyr. Nobody will hurt you as long as I’m around, he thought.
“Well, well.” A huge man stepped out in front of them, blocking the hallway. “Look what we have here.” He drew a knife.
“Run!” Taro pulled Ambyr back down the hall they had just run down.
“I’m not a bad marksman you know!” The man shouted and threw his knife at them.
“Ambyr, duck!” Taro shouted. The knife flew right above where her head had been a second before. A big door was in front of them. Taro tried the door, but it was blocked from the other side.
“Tough luck for you kids.” The man growled, pulling his knife out of the wall and facing them. “I’m going to kill you, Princess.”
“Over my dead body.” Taro snapped, stepping in front of her.
“I’m flexible.” He smirked. He thrust his knife at him, but Taro evaded it and pulled out his own sword.
“Ahhh. A page, huh? Well, let’s see what those knights have been teaching you.” The man said. He took a quick jab at Taro, but he jumped out of the way again.
“What’s the matter, boy? Can’t swing a sword at me? Don’t you wanna protect your little girlfriend?” the man sneered. Taro growled, then swung his sword at the man. He moved to the side, smoothly avoiding Taro’s strike. Taro stumbled under the weight of the sword.
“They didn’t teach you anything yet, did they? And already ten years old, I presume? Tsk, tsk. Well, that’s Grymorian knights for you. I thought this was going to be fun. Oh well.” The man began to walk towards him, knife in his hand. Struggling, Taro lifted his sword again and slashed. This time, the man didn’t dodge quickly enough and the sword sliced his knife hand clean off.
“AUUUUUUGH!! You little-!” The man didn’t get to finish his sentence. Taro pushed him against the wall with the sword to his throat. “Well, well. Let me teach you something, little boy, something I’ve just learned. Never....underestimate....your....opponent!” The man took another knife out of his back pocket with his remaining hand and stabbed Taro in the stomach.
“TARO!!!” Ambyr cried, tears leaking out of her eyes.
“Run.....Ambyr......” Taro muttered. The sword clattered from his hands. The man pulled his knife out of him, and he fell to the ground.
“Now it’s your turn, Princess.” The man growled. He winced and touched the bloodied stump on his right arm, then gave Taro a vicious kick. Taro groaned in pain.
“That’s for my hand, you bastard.” He muttered. Ambyr stood, frozen in shock and horror as the man began to walk towards her.
“Ambyr, run!” Taro cried. “I’ll be okay.....just run!!” His cry seemed to unfreeze her, and she ducked underneath the man’s arms and ran as fast as her legs could carry her. Not entirely sure where she was going, she dashed up the stairs into an enormous room, where an old wizard was sitting peacefully cross-legged on his table. Ambyr recognized him as Valentine Nazarath, the old wizard who lived in there castle.
“Princess, whatever is the matter?” He asked.
“It’s Taro....Taro....” Ambyr fell to her knees and began to weep uncontrollably.
“Oh dear.....I see. It’s happened.” Nazarath said and jumped down off of the table and onto the floor. “Stand up now, child, dry your tears. You’re going to get out of here.” Ambyr slowly stood up and wiped her eyes as Nazarath grabbed a small bowl of white glittery powder and his wand.
“Alright now. Are you ready?” Nazarath asked. Ambyr nodded shakily, even though she had no idea what he was going to do. He began to mutter something under his breath, then took a handful of powder and flicked it at her. The world slowly turned white before her eyes, and she suddenly felt incredibly sleepy. She closed her eyes, and her mind went blank.
