I'm a 21-year old guy from India - currently working at the University of Oxford as a research assistant. I completed my Masters from Oxford this September (in Biology, in case anyone's wondering ;) ).

I have been in love with books ever since I could read. Right from Enid Blyton's 'Noddy' series to the Classics, Harry Potter to the Lord Of The Rings, Agatha Christie to Sherlock Holmes and tomes of random books here and there - I'm always hungry for good books.

Graduate studies, deadlines and work-stress have resulted in a decline in my reading habit in the past few years (mainly because it's not been possible to devote time from all the maddening science work!) Even so, I do try and pick up a good book once in a while and squeeze out some time from schedules to finish it. I am happiest when I'm alone in my room, curled up on my bed with a great book, lost in the author's words and my imagination for company.
Non-fiction books aren't really my cup of tea, not yet at least. I have enough Science and academia to deal with in real life; when I read a book I look forward to an escape from the mundane, into a different realm altogether.

As someone whose love for books has resulted in sporadic outbursts of poetry and story-writing, I've decided to get serious about my passion for writing (and reading, too). I mostly enjoy writing fiction, and the dream is to be able to churn out a novel some day. Currently, I feel like a raw, crude beginner and would love to be able to receive feedback on my writing and learn from everyone's experiences. In terms of what I write, I prefer not be limited by genre and love to dabble in fantasy, mystery, humour, real-life drama, and other genres too.

I am armed with an empty notebook, a pen, my imagination and tonnes of solitary time :) Hoping that I'll be able to share my passion for words, creating stories and redeem my reading habits and find some new and amazing friends. Happy Writing! :)

Cheers,
Tejas

Heyo Tejas!

Lava here! And I'm glad to meet a fellow Indian. I'm doing my undergrad in India in Biotechnological Engineering. Oxford sounds cool especially as you're into research.
And my reading timeline is similar to what you've put up. Except maybe LOTR. I never did manage to finish it.

Oh yes, I totally agree!

I'd love to read something you put up. YWS is definitely a great place and I'm sure your stay here will be fun.
Hope to see you around soon!
And feel free to PM me if you have a truck load of questions, or if you'd just like a chat. :)

Cheers,
~Lava

Hey Lava (is this short for Lavanya ? Just curious :))

Thanks for the kind reply. Where are you doing your undergrad from?

LOTR is an excellent book, probably one of my best reads. Tremendously inspiring if you ever think about writing fantasy. Tolkein was at Oxford for most of his life, in fact, I studied at his College for my MSc.

YWS looks totally amazing, and slightly intimidating, but I'll definitely buzz in case of doubts/ideas. I'll be putting up one of my stories very soon, and I hope you will enjoy it. I am really excited about getting to share my writing and also read others'.

Thanks again,

Best,
T

'Ello Tejas! Welcome!

It's always great to see a new face about. Especially one that loves Lord of the Rings >.< One of my favourite series of all time. And one that inspired me to start writing. Next to Anne McCaffery's Dragonriders of Pern of course.

This place can be quite intimidating at first, but don't worry. You'll figure it out. And if you ever get lost, just ask plenty of questions. Especially of the mods [people in green] like Lava up there. They have most the answers.

Well, hope to see you around!

Dear Meadow

Thanks for the reply :) It is very nice to be welcome so whole-heartedly, I already feel less terrified :)

As a LOTR fan, it might interest you to know that I actually sat in the same garden that Tolkien and CS Lewis used to meet up in, during their years at Oxford.

I'll definitely ask questions if stuck. Meanwhile, do check out my story. I am planning to submit it very soon, your comments will be much appreciated. Although, it is a bit long for a 'short' story ;)

Until later,
T

Hey there. I think I reviewed your story earlier if I'm not wrong. So you have a masters in Biology but you're 21? That's pretty awesome and wow. I'm just 20 and I'm two years into my Biology degree!
Any ways, it's good that you are finally channelling your inner author. Be an active member on YWS and your writing is going to improve. Trust me, I am a living example of that.
Good luck and welcome to young writers.
The best is what you make it!

Hey,

Yes, I just turned 21 in September and have finished my MSc. Hoping to start my PhD next year :)

I am beginning to already enjoy spending time with my writing and myself. Thanks for the review.

Cheers,
Tejas
