At first I thought this place place was lame and boring, but then my friends started telling me about it and I started reading their stories as a guest, and finally, I decided I wanted to join. The bad part is I have no idea of how to use this or how to start. So, if you want to be friend and help me out, please try. Thanks!

Well, you can go to the community forums and check around there to see if you can find answers to your questions. Or, if you want you can PM me with a specific question and I'll try and help you.

You seem to have started just fine making a welcome thread. Now if you want you can go to the read/write section and browse around, read, do some reviews. You can also upload some of your work from there. You could look at the news--there are usually some pretty good articles there, or you can check out blogs and write your own. You could head over to chat if you like. Best way to start is to just find something you enjoy and do it. The site is all about having fun with writing.

You don't have to worry about anyone being mean around here; I only know one person who's mean of the thousands of members on the site, and that person may or may not be human, so you can't blame them. xD

If you're having trouble around the site or just feel lost, pleasepleaseplease feel free to PM me with any of your questions. I would be glad to help.

Also, if something's really wrong (things like plagiarism, bullying, just plain badness), you can always contact a moderator. All mods are the members whose names are in green (light greens are Junior Moderators, dark green Global Moderators). They pretty much run the site and keep it going smoothly, and are there to help you. Don't feel shy about contacting them.

With that said, welcome, welcome, welcome! I hope you have some major fun around here.

Well, if you ever have any questions, you can basically ask anyone on YWS here, and they'd be happy to help. You can ask your questions in the Questions and Answers forum, or you can just PM a mod, etc.
The easiest way to get to know YWS is on your own, by just exploring the forums. We have some pretty cool forums, such as the Will Review for Food forum where you can get extra reviews for your work, the Randomness forum which is where I always go when I'm bored, or the Writing Activities forum. Get posting!
