What's wrong with killing characters?

I do tend to leave it until the end of the story, though, just to give the readers a false sense of security. I find it rather fun. xD

Psh, killing characters is fun! But killing main characters?

Laaaaaaaaaame! It's like, "Oh, hmmmmm... let me see, I'm not quite sure how to end this properly, so instead of attempting to make a resolution, I'll just kill my characters and hopefully this will create a dramatic effect that will make my reader not notice my complete and utter cop-out!"

See?

That only depends on whether or not you kill them off for a reason and how you kill them off.

Exactly, like sometimes you HAVE to kill of your haracters or it becomes too much like a fairytale where everrything allways works out. It just isn't natural someimtes to let a character live. If you did, the stor would loose exciting-ness.

Well, in the story I'm writing, one character, Darren, was supposed to die... but then I changed my mind. Don't get me wrong, I was enjoying writing his death scene, but it didn't work. So, in the end, I just had him locked up in a dungeon while he was starved and tortured for three years. *shrug*

Thus far I've committed to only one death to a main character in my series. Quite honestly I was biased and hated him, and decided this on the first page of writing about him. As the story progressed I still hated him, but I did start to feel bad about killing him. As I have it written he jumps in front of the girl he loves and dies in her arms. I've decided that is to clean and decided the Ifrit would shove it's hand through his chest instantly killing him. No sappy I love you before dying now.

Honestly, I've killed off characters easily enough...but it has to depend on the circumstances more than anything else. You can't just have someone randomely die unless it's going to mean a significant plot advancement or something. As it is, it's never bothered me before. It is what it is, right? Sometimes a main character or protagonist has to die, and sometimes he/she does not have to die. Either way really doesn't bother me at all.

I kill characters whenever I feel like it.

Oh dear, oh gosh, this is my weak point. I love murdering--my characters, silly-- however, I do find it difficult and saddening. In my work-in-progress novel Thought of Irelyn, the character Irelyn is dead before the book begins. She is in the story with flashbacks and that, I don't have a problem with even if she grew on me. However, later in the novel her brother meets a girl. Blah blah blah the two fall in love. However, I am contemplating killing off Cricket (the girl he falls for). I know that might be a little much but life is like that.

My problem is A: I love, love, love Cricket. She's super amazing.
B. Killing off Cricket would absolutely devastate Ryland. It is weird, Ryland is my my child, my best friend... I feel so bad hurting him like that. Is that normal for writers? Or am I just being strange?
