Tectonic plates rest on fluid rock, the mantle. The only place where the crust sinks to the mantle is at subduction zones, its not possible for any plate to sink in the middle of the plate. Even then, at a subduction zone, the overiding plate is forced upwards, and mountains/volcanoes are created. If Atlantis was a real place, which it may very well have been, an island off the coast of greece exploded due to volcanic activity, and left little more than a crater filled with water. It may well have been the real atlantis, but to put faith in folklore and myth as to the destruction of an entire society its ludacris.

There are literally thousands of theories as to the real location of Atlantis, some say it was Ireland, some say it was an island in the strait of gebralter, off the coast of italy, greece, norway, france, florida, gulf of mexico, some go as far as to say off the coast of Japan. Some say it was actually ireland, or the bahamas, its everywhere, apparently.

Theorizing on the activity of the divine? that's something we can never know, the only action we can ever know is the physical outcome.

I agree that it is just a myth.

Firstly... Atlantis is a legend, not a myth. Myths seek to explain natural phenomen, while a legend tells a story that may or may not be true. Also, legends are almost always based in fact.

Right now I'm writing a novel that concerns Atlantis, and I've done a lot of research on it so far. Based on everything I've read, I think it really did exist. Indeed, there are writings that exist that talk about it prior to Plato, and there are even Indian (as in India) texts that mention it dating back three thousand years (they called it Atala).

In any case, the story of Atlantis is certainly plausible and its fate was probably the fate of many areas. It was probably an island that was formed by a volcano. One day the volcano blew up and sunk the whole island. It probably was very big for its time (around 10,000 people or so) and probably had the most powerful navy at the time (canoes with sails). Over time, the stories became embellished such that Atlantis came to be this huge extremely powerful, extremely advanced civilization that existed on an entire continent outside the pillars of Hercules.

In every major religious text, there is a mention of a great flood, and worlds sinking beneath the sea. There are also a great many theories as to the true origin and current location of atlantis. so much, that any more, its next to impossible to seperate fact from fiction from hopeless dreaming. There is an excellent chance that something like atlantis did exist, in fact, there is an excellent chance that something like atlantis existed several times. But, the current myth/legend/folklore (which is what it really is) is based off of one comment made by plato over two thousand years ago. It is entirely possible that it happened, as well as its entirely possible that it didn't, as well as entirely possible that it happened more than once.
