What do you think of the first three pages of my story?
These tears are the hurt caused
The pain felt
The agony the misery the distress
The beating of the heart different then the norm
The pulse is much quicker
More frightened
It’s the one who causes it
Not being backfired
Only one-way and not to the other
Never being understood
Never being fixed
Never being forgotten
Always being there
Tory Sanchez was 14 and very smart. She spent most of her time reading and writing. She loved learning, reading about peoples experiences whether it be fiction or nonfiction. Her passion was writing. She had notebooks filled to every inch. There were no empty spaces. She wrote down all her feelings, all her fears, and all her dreams. Her biggest dream was to get away from her home town.
Tory started writing when she was 10. She was upset at her mom one day. She had hurt her really bad that day. Worse than the others. She decided to take all her feelings out. Something she had never done, or known how. She wasn’t much for sharing. She picked up a journal and started writing. About everything and nothing. The words came out filling the pages. Her hand kept moving letting her feelings pour out on the notebook. Ever since then, she kept all her entries about when her mom beat her, in that journal. It was a personal journal, called “my life.” If anyone ever got their hand on it, her life would be over. All of her secrets were in that journal.
She had many other journals as well. Journals for everything. A journal for her dreams, her fears, her poems, her stories. A lot of the journals were mixed together. Her journals made her feel like she could open up to something. Since she wasn’t too big on sharing, she needed something that she could share with. Whether it be alive or inanimate it helped.
She was pretty, actually really pretty. She hid her beauty behind her glasses. No one could dislike this black-haired green-eyed girl. That is except her mother and her mother’s boyfriend Todd. Todd didn’t care for Tory or notice her. EVER.
Her mom started drinking when Tory was only eight. She pretty much took care of herself. All those years. Her mom didn’t even notice her. The only time she noticed her was when she beat her. Yes, when she beat her. Her mother’s boyfriend
She never met her real father, and couldn’t ask her mom about him, since there wasn’t much to tell in the first place. Her mom, Tiffany, was 18 at the time. It wasn’t a serious relationship. A couple of dates which led to Tory. She would have better off being adopted, never knowing her mother either. All she knew about her dad was his name, Matt.
She was shy girl, but once she felt comfortable around you she would open up. She has a great sense of humor and knew how to have a good time. She was very independent, never relying on anyone but herself. She felt that it was very difficult to gain peoples trust. If you ever managed to get it, and then break it, that was it.
She lived in a small city in Kentucky. She had grown up there and never knew anything different. She wanted to find all the places in the books. To discover everything possible. She wanted to be a teacher. She loved passing on knowledge. She spent most of her time in her room reading and writing.
Tory took care of herself, so she never bothered to ask for money. She had a job. Her best friend’s mom gave her one at her store to help out. She worked at a clothing store on most weekends. She didn’t get paid much, since she was only 14, but it was enough. At least it was something. That something was hers’ that she earned.
Her best friend, Nick Lampert, was a cute boy with blonde had and sea blue eyes. He was 15. The two of them had feelings for the one another, but would never admit it. They both thought in their heart that the other didn’t feel the same way. The truth was they were perfect for each other.
Tory never had to worry about impressing him. She could be herself around him, which was the best for her. She told him everything, just about everything. She didn’t tell him about her mom beating her though. She couldn’t. It would just break him. He was so sensitive and cared so much about her. It would break him to know that someone was hurting his best friend. He did however know about her drinking problem.
Nicks mom Aubrey, also knew. Tory spent a lot of her nights at his house. His mom didn’t mind. She liked having Tory around, treated Tory like her own. She felt as though Tory was her daughter. She liked it because she didn’t have any girls of her own. It was just Aubrey and her three sons. Nick was the middle, Seth was the oldest he was 16, and Tyler was the youngest he was 12. The three boys really enjoyed having Tory around for that reason; they didn’t have a sister of their own.
Nick and Tory kind of grew up in the same style. He also had no father. His mother and father got divorced after Aubrey got pregnant with Tyler. The two of them were only three years apart, so Nick didn’t have a dad for 12 years of his life. His mother noticed all three of them. She especially noticed Tory, whom she had a good relationship with. She knew Tory never had a good home life, but she didn’t know the whole truth. Sometimes the boys even got jealous because their mom paid more attention to Tory then her own boys.
Aubrey really gave Tory a great life. Tory didn’t know any better and felt as though she was being treated like a princess.
When Tory went home, sometimes her mom noticed. She would call her name and say, “Tory, where were you?!” and then she would hit her. Tory would walk away and go to her room to write or read.
Her mom always hit her, but it was never the same. Some nights were worse than others. The more she drank, she barely bothered. The less she drank, the worse she hit Tory. Deep down inside, Tory liked it when her mom didn’t drink. She would rather her hit her. In her own way, even if it caused pain to Tory, she noticed her. She would rather feel pain then nothing at all.
Sometimes Tory felt pity for her mom, she didn’t have a great life either though. Her boyfriend didn’t really care about her. He cheated on her multiple times. He took advantage of her. Tiffany knew but didn’t do anything about him. She just let him slide every time. She let him come in the house whenever it pleased him. When it didn’t please him, he left.
It was Monday night and Tory came home after being with the Lamperts the whole weekend. Her mom was drunk, lying on the couch. Her boy friend was watching the football game. She tried to come in quietly, she did not succeed. When she opened the door, it made a loud squeak. Todd took his eyes off the television for a second he spared. He looked at Tory, while she tried to walk inaudibly across the hall to her room. He then took his eyes off her and put them back on the television.
At 7 o’ clock Tiffany was usually sleeping. She wasn’t this time, so Tory wouldn’t have luck. Her mom got up and beat her, hard across her face. Todd paid no attention; his eyes were still glued to the television. It hurt Tory; she started streaming hot tears that were rolling down her cheeks. “Where were you this weekend?” her mother asked waiting for a response. “Well, where were you!”
“I was at Nick’s the whole weekend”
“How come?” seeming little bit aggravated.
“Because mom, I didn’t want to be here.”
“Why not, this is your home.”
Tory pointed to her face which her mother had just hit, “because of this mom, because of this.” She ran to her room. Her cheek was throbbing with pain. She could feel that this was going to be a bad bruise. She usually didn’t cry, she was used to it.
She took out her journal. She kept it in a very private place that no one would even suspect to look. It was on the very top of her closet. She had to stand on a chair to reach it. She picked up the box, still not having the journal in her hand. Behind the box on her wall was a little pin tack. That pin opened a little cubby that she made. She cut a little door, and put a piece of wood on the bottom so nothing fell down. She kept her most private of private things there. This was one her of few private things.
She opened it up and wrote the date. She dated every journal entry she made. It was a journal filled of many things. It was called, “my life”. It was in that very journal that she would write down all her feelings and thoughts, poems and events. Not just about anything though, about her life with her mom hitting her. The entry that she wrote tonight was a poem. It went like this.
My mother continues
As if I am a failure
She can’t see the pain behind my tears
She can’t see the hurt beyond the pain
The tears are the sadness
It is crying out for help
I just wish that I could tell someone
Anyone
Just so they could know my pain
I don’t have a family
I don’t have a mother
I have no one
The Lamperts they aren’t really my family
They can’t imagine my life
All they can do is try
I thank them for that
But they can never help
The only way I would be helped
Is if my mother was sent away
If I was sent away from my mother.
