Breakfast

With a satisfying sound, halfway between a clink and a clunk, the metal rods locked into place. In moments, electricity began to course through the long sinewy forms of the rack, sending the occasional spark flying into the metal chamber. It was not long before the rods began to heat, slowly at first, but eventually to the point where they glowed neon orange as if just having been removed from a forge furnace.

Bartholomew licked his lips in fervent anticipation.

In the oppressive heat of the chamber, a fearsome change was taking hold. Maillard’s reaction caused amino acids and resulting sugars to react with great force. Out of the reactions came seething water and volatile N-substituted glycosylamine.

A bead of sweat rolled down Bartholomew’s forehead.

Suddenly, and without warning, the unstable glycosylamine underwent startling Amadori rearrangement out of which sprang ketosamines which quickly reacted further. This last transformation was perhaps the greatest of the sequence for reductones, diacetyl, asprin, pyruvaldehyde, brown nitrogenous polymers, melanoidins, and other short-chain hydrolytic fission products all erupted in seconds.

Bartholomew blinked, the only such time he had done so in the last two suspenseful minutes.

There was a brief pause, a moment at which the world seemed to stand still, as if exhausted by the previous few seconds of exhaustive chemical change. Then, somewhere, a catch loosened, and the still-smoking rods flew upward like uncaged canaries into the cool outside air until they were cruelly restrained by another catch, which allowed the contents of the rack to go flying forward (for they were unrestrained) and clear the roof of the chamber in which they had been recently confined…

Bartholomew pounced, like a Burmese tiger attacking a tourist, upon the two golden-brown slices of airborne toast. He slid his plate with practiced ease underneath his crumbly contraption, and lightly caught the toast with the cool porcelain surface. It bounced, flinging crumbs across the plate, until… at last… it came to rest.

Exhilarating Monotony Contest by Flemzo.

-Perhaps a little too late for the contest, but I'll think of additions to the one line interruptions. Thanks Kylan!
- About the "unrestrained" contents of the rack, on second thought, "restrained" pops up too often in that sentence. Anyoen with a suitable alternative, please suggest it, but for the moment, things will be left as they were...

How exciting! I was a bit thrown off by all of the chemical reactions and stuff (I've never been good with sciencey things), but it kept me in suspense. That last paragraph was probably the best part. This definitely captured the essence, but i can't be too sure until judging.

Very entertaining. Your imagery is superb; something that seems to be missing in a lot of pieces here on YWS. A lesser writer may not have been able to pull of the chemical reaction descriptions, but by countering them with unique metaphors and similes, you managed to craft a tightly woven pseudo-smartguy thriller

The only complaint I have is your use of one liners to describe your character. (ie:

Bartholomew licked his lips in fervent anticipation.

One is fine, but the second breaks the flow of the piece and the third makes it falter. I think this can be fixed by describing Bartholmew's reactions a little more in depth or attaching one or two 'liners onto the body of a paragraph. Know what I mean?

Also "2 suspenseful minutes" should be "two suspenseful minutes".

Anyway, great job. I think you should post more fiction. I noticed you had some scripts in your portfolio, but I know nothing about critiquing stage directions, etc. And I want to repay you for your wonderful critiques of my novel...

Well done! It does a really good job of keeping the reader's attention, even though it's only about making toast. :D I think I guessed that it was toast by the end of the first paragraph, and by that time I was pretty well hooked. I love your description of the toast popping up in the last two paragraphs; your comparison with the Burmese tiger attacking a tourist was especially funny.

All that scientific stuff went over my head, so I'll just assume it's all right for now, though I'm wondering about the word "reductones" in the fifth paragraph, as it's not in my dictionary, and it looks a lot like "reductions." Is that what you meant?

...which allowed the contents of the rack to go flying forward (for they were unrestrained)...
The parenthetical phrase here kind of bothers me. It's a little more wordy than it needs to be, I guess. Maybe you could say, "...the unrestrained contents of the rack..." or something. For that matter, it would probably be okay to take it out altogether.

Being really nit-picky:
  • "golden brown" should be hyphenated, and I think "still smoking" as you used it should, too.
  • I'd like you to actually delete the numeral "2" instead of crossing it out, because it's distracting.
  • I'm not sure I like all the ellipses near the end. The last one's alright, I guess, but I suggest that you replace the other two with a period and comma, respectively. I feel like they break the natural flow of the words.
I agree with Kylan's comment about the one-liners, and I'm glad to see that you're thinking about it.

But, yeah, it's a fun piece. Great job! Good luck in the contest! :smt023

Wow, this was amazing.

seriously, did you just get done taking Chem, or did you just look up the reactions of a toaster?

You have finally found a way to make Chem acually very interesting!

Very good job.
