Question about grammar.

Wasn't sure what forum to put this in.

Anyway, my question is, when the narration of the story in first person or in a character's speech switches from commentary to quotation, do you capitalise the first word of the quotation?

Example:

"And then it would turn to 'a pink elephant sat on a log' instead of whatever," said Johnny.

Would the "a" be capitalised, or left as it is?

Egads. That's an awkward sentence in any case. Still, I don't think you should capitalize "a." It's already implied that it is a start of a quotation. Though really, it's such an awkward sentence that I would probably rewrite it.
