Northwick consists of docks that have been patched and repatched over the years, with boats packed tightly together. The buildings near the harbor are stacked in uneven rows and are made of dark stone and narrow windows. From Northwick, you can see the majority of Graystone. The people know the university brings money to their city, as well as tourism.

It's a working city. People wake early, go to bed late, and don't waste time on philosophy. Magic exists here, but it's kind of distant, though the people who do practice it seem to have higher-level spells due to the proximity to Graystone and Aevor's God.

character biographies + histories

mara ellison
Mara Ellison was born and raised in Northwick, in a working household situated within walking distance of the harbor. Her father, Jonathan Ellison, worked irregular hours before his untimely and unexpected death, which occurred during Mara's early years [heart attack due to the overuse of magic]. The absence of a stable paternal figure altered the household dynamic significantly. Her mother, Katalan Ellison, assumed primary financial responsibility, while domestic and emotional responsibilities were informally redistributed among the daughters.

Of her siblings, Verina had the most direct influence on Mara's early development. Verina often substituted for parental authority to Mara when their mother was busy. Jasmyne contributed to maintaining the household, while the youngest, Frankie, remained largely dependent on the rest of them. Mara developed a habit of watching systems before engaging with them, as nothing really was stable in her life at that point.

Her admission to Graystone was solely because of her talents and not her lineage. Within Divine Biology, Mara has demonstrated a consistent ability to identify irregularities in patterns that others tend to overlook. She is not considered the most advanced student in terms of technicality, but her observational accuracy has been noted repeatedly in faculty evaluations. Professor Mercer, in particular, has identified her as "structurally intuitive."

Mara's studies focus on regenerative pacing and vascular mapping within divine biological systems. Mara remains in environments longer than most students, pays attention to minor inconsistencies, and rarely dismisses anomalies as coincidences. Though sometimes overlooked, her friends definitely use her as a source of knowledge and respect her for her skills -- especially Jonah, even though he rarely shows it.

jonah valioupe
Jonah comes from a family with established ties to medical and biochemical institutions operating in and around Northwick and Velmorah. The Valioupe name appears in multiple funding records connected to Graystone, particularly in relation to magically derived compounds distributed through the God in the lower chamber of the school. He was raised with an understanding of how magical resources are processed, regulated, and applied in broader societal ways. Unlike other students, Jonah does not present as overtly formal, and doesn't like to take things seriously half the time. This has led to many of his peers and professors underestimating him, even though he's indeed very smart.

Jonah's academic focus is the refinement and stabilization of magical derivatives. This places him in direct contact with the magic generated by "the Source" (The God). He has one known sibling, Moses Valioupe, who has remained more closely aligned with his family's expectations. His friends and professors will often mention how different they are, personality-wise.

In his free time, Jonah enjoys hanging out with River and playing chess. Jonah and River have known each other since they started at Graystone, and have been roommates ever since. Since Jonah met Jade, he's had an infatuation with her. He often bugs Mara about getting him a date, but Jade never budges.

river hayes
River was raised in Halbrecht, an industrial city known for integrating magical systems into its buildings. His family is known for assisting with structural reinforcement and engineering. His grandfather, Preston Hayes, contributed to lots of large-scale stabilization projects and is recognized nationally in Aevor.

His father, Quentin Hayes, continues to work in structural engineering, while his siblings have pursued related professions. River's early schooling focused on how structures respond under stress, how failure manifests, and how it can be prevented. At Graystone, River specializes in divine metallurgy: the interaction between magical systems and other materials. His work involves analyzing how structures--particularly those containing or surrounding "the Source"--absorb and redistribute magic. He is less concerned with the biological parts of studying "the Source" and more focused on its impact on the environment and people around it.

River doesn't really "enjoy" school. He participates when necessary, completes assigned work, and avoids unnecessary attention. However, he's smarter than he thinks. He participates in lots of extracurriculars at Graystone, such as rugby, soccer, and political clubs. He's also extremely physically fit and spends a lot of his time working out with Jonah.
