Period has crazy durability and the only thing that can bypass it is a new sentence, which, if we're sticking to the rules of the English language, means that no punctuation mark can damage it because they don't start new sentences.

oh wait, I didn't think about that. Em-dashes can cut off sentences before they finish. :o
