But now, the Deck has gone wild.
No one knows who cut it. No one knows what it means. But you felt the shift, the sick lurch in the gut of the universe. Now fate trembles. Realities blur. Some cards are missing. Others have returned, reversed.
And you? You've been cast into the Atrium, a liminal realm that exists between shuffles. A purgatory of collapsing symbolism and twisted reflections. A prison. Each “region” shaped by Arcana is still active, still clinging to their meaning.
No exit. No instructions. Just you, and the others. The only way out -- if there is one -- is hidden in the shape of the draw.
The Lore:
Spoiler
The Atrium:
A prison outside time. A paradox. A structure not built but dealt into existence.
The Atrium is the containment facility where the awakened Arcana, living manifestations of the Tarot, are held. It shifts constantly: corridors rearrange, stairwells spiral endlessly, and doors appear where there were none. The walls sometimes talk. Clocks run backwards. Gravity bends on a whim.
The Atrium is not managed by humans. It's governed by a system of ancient protocol, a "Warden Intelligence" called The Croupier, which enforces rules few fully understand. Whether it’s a god, a construct, or a broken remnant of the Deck is unknown.
There are no cells. The prison is a world unto itself. You don’t know when you arrived. You don’t know how long you’ve been here. No one does.
The Deck:
The cosmic structure underpinning all fate and existence. Once whole, the Deck governed reality through archetypal balance. Every card drawn shaped a life, a world, a war.
But something went wrong.
The Shuffle came too early. Or too late. Or never completed.
Now, fragments of the Major Arcana have bled into form, into you. The Deck is no longer stable, and the Arcana are now wild cards, corrupted or incomplete. Some say the Deck is trying to fix itself. Others say it’s unraveling. You are the cards that shouldn't have been played.
Reversal:
The worst thing that can happen to an Arcana. Reversal is not death. It’s distortion. A Reversed Arcana becomes a corrupted, mirror version of their original meaning.
Some reversals are temporary. Others… permanent.
Inhabitants:
Besides your fellow Arcana, there are other figures in the Atrium:
The Croupier: The disembodied Warden. Speaks through black mirrors, intercoms, and dreams. Cannot be reasoned with. Appears to follow Tarot logic.
The Masked: Human-like but empty-eyed, these silent enforcers patrol the halls. They adapt to each Arcana’s powers. They feel no fear. They carry no memories.
The Querents: Occasionally, humans are glimpsed on the outer edges of the Atrium, drawn in by accident or fate. Some worship the Arcana. Others try to kill them.
Power Rules:
Arcana powers are bound by Symbolic Weight -- the stronger your connection to your card’s meaning, the stronger your power. But using your power makes the Deck notice you. Too much attention, and you risk Reversal.
Each Arcana bears a Mark, an evolving sigil on their body that changes as their connection to their card deepens, fractures, or flips.
Escape?
There’s a rumor of a Final Spread, a ritual or alignment that could shuffle the Deck anew, releasing you… or rewriting the world.
To reach it, you’ll need to:
1. Reclaim your full Arcana name.
2. Survive the Croupier’s Trials.
3. Face the one card no one ever wants to see drawn: The Blank.
