there is no loyalty amongst thieves,
and i should have known this from the start.
no honour amongst thieves,
but still, even so. we never took
from those more ill-fortuned than us.

a memory is nothing more than
a hungry beast, who gladly feasts
on unspoken possibilities
of what would have been, what could have been,
of all the redemptions we could have made
if only, there was a way.

Interesting personification of memory as hungry beast. It explores how we haunt ourselves with imagined alternatives, and how those ghosts grow stronger with time, especially when the past feels unfinished or unresolved. We all can easily relate to this.
I only put my signature on big cheques.

my father is a man of few words,
and even fewer actions. most days,
he is a forgotten epilogue to a story
half written. the skeleton of a memory
refusing to fade.
but,
i will always remember, how he would
chase away the birds and squirrels
night after night in our yard.
like a fervant prayer, a hungry desire
to protect the fruit trees our mother
loved so much.

I love this thread idea! The first poem really sets the atmosphere of this world steeped in memories of the past. The imagery in this thread in general is really amazing - I especially like the description of apricots in 'A bartender asks a question'.

> Oof </3 this poem is tragic
> I really liked these lines:
you turn, and i am there, engine light
blinking in the dark.

> This poem is very moving!
> "like a fervant prayer, a hungry desire" is such a good simile - the "night after night" in chasing away the squirrels makes me think of someone keeping vigil, which seems related to prayers, and the "hungry desire" seems to connect with the idea of fruit trees and fruits as well. I also like how it conveys this sense of intensity and liveliness, in contrast to him being a "skeleton" in the first half of the poem.

Happy NaPo, and keep writing! You're almost there!

backtracking - 26.

your presence is a heartache i cannot rid,
a bonsai beneath my skin,
where every exhalation,
every contraction and expansion
i feel you tug
against the roots of my lung
on the canals of my heart.
every breath i take, a ruthless reminder
an evergreen presence
no winter can chase away.

at last, we're here.
same bar, same place, same drinks.
only the taste is different,
i wonder if it is us
or the drink that has changed.
