The Plot

Welcome to small town of Waterville, Ireland. The town is a haven to the supernatural of all kinds, from vampires and mages to the Fair Folk. It's served as such for many years. Waterville is majority-owned and run by the Ginealach, or the Clan as many residents call it. Life is good in Waterville; non-supernaturals are looked after, and looked after well. They're also protected from forces outside of the little village.

The Ginealach sends clan members, also known as Guardians, out every year to seek indivuals, whether human, mage or otherwise, and bring them back to the Clan's home in Waterville. These "wards", as the Ginealach calls them, enjoy a semi-priveledged lifestyle. They are sent to school, taught how to hone their abilities, and eventually (especially the humans) are given the choice of becoming immortal or staying mortal. Some of them come from certain bloodlines that are more inclined to the Clan's abilities, and their lifestyle. Most of these wards, once of age, chose immortality, but the risks are high and not all make it through the transition.

Then a mysterious illness strikes the manor, incapacitating several Guardians and many Wards. No one knows the real source of it, although many suspect magic as the real culprit, and rumours among the Wards say that it might be coming from one of their own. Some say it's driven by forces outside Waterville and the Clan's reach, others say it's beyond understanding. But all agree; it's hurting the wards and the Ginealach.

Who is behind the illness? What secrets will be uncovered? And why has the First been missing for so long?

Lorcan McCarthy

A collab with @KateHardy, @WeepingWisteria, and @ScarlettFire

Slowly, the sun rose above the horizon as a new day dawned over Waterville. Bright rays of sun shone upon the lazy, stubborn Irish clouds and mist, chasing them off to bring an unusual yet promising bright and sunny day that showed the true beauty of the Emerald Isle.

A large lone house stood near the shore on a small strip of land between a bay which led to the sea and Lough Currane. The pale yellow walls practically glowed in the warm morning light, giving the house a wonderful friendly aura. The first time one saw it, they would never guess that inside contained secrets of the supernatural.

One particular supernatural was comfortably sleeping, half sprawled across his bed after a long night of running through the moors for fun. The bright, promising sunlight managed to find a way into his room despite the closed curtains and shone on his still closed eyes.

With a soft grunt, Lorcan shifted slightly, just enough to get the sun out of his eyes. He had planned on sleeping in at least a little today however apparently the world had other plans for him as the scent of bacon wafted up from downstairs. Anyone else might not have been able to smell it from that far away, especially while only being about half awake but his werewolf senses certainly did.

In the hopes that no one else was quite up yet, Lorcan forced himself out of bed and tugged some clothes that weren't pajamas on before quietly making his way downstairs. He slipped down a couple hallways and a staircase as he made his way towards his destination which just so happened to also be where the bacon was. What a coincidence.

"Oh hello there Lorcan!" someone called from behind him.

Well, there went his hopes of making his way to the kitchen undetected. He stopped and turned with a grin nonetheless though. "G'morning, Miss Sierra!"

She smiled gently at him, bowing slightly. "A lovely morning to you as well!"

He smiled back. "Thanks!" He then hummed. "You're up early, headed somewhere today?"

She shrugged. "Just kind of felt like getting up today! I suspect I'll find out why eventually!"

"Fun!" He chuckled. "No plans is sometimes the best way to go."

"Precisely!" She beamed. "So few people understand the power of that."

"Exactly, gives you more freedom to do what you want."

"Bingo! I'd give you an A plus but you're not taking a test sadly." She looked genuinely saddened by this.

"You could give me an A plus anyway, then I can tell the kids how if I managed to pass your class, they can too." Lorcan grinned.

Sierra burst into giggles. "This is why I enjoy talking to you!"

Lorcan laughed. "Well, that sure is a relief to know. I might've thought otherwise." He joked.

She somehow laughed harder, clutching the wall. "Oh, you're good. You're good."

"Well thank ye kindly." He grinned before getting mildly distracted as the smell of bacon wafted down the hall once more.

"Ooh, breakfast is a cooking!"

He happily nodded. "Sure is! I was just on my way there actually."

"Oh, that sounds wonderful!"

"You're welcome to join me if you want."

"Oh, sure, why not?" She giggled. "We've just established you're excellent company."

He laughed. "We sure did. Now if we wait much longer, there are going to be people flocking to get food. Best to beat the crowds, don't you think?"

"I definitely want to beat the crowd." A soft, purring voice came in from behind.

Sierra whistled. "My, it is a good morning."

Mafdet grinned, her feline teeth nice and sharp. "It will be if there's still bacon left."

"Excatly why we should get there soon." Lorcan grinned back.

"That's why I'm here. To tell you to hurry up." She did a small curtsy. "And to steal Sierra's ham."

Sierra harrumphed. "You're lucky I prefer the sausage to the ham."

"You're even luckier I prefer ham." Mafdet's tail swished.

"Well, neither of you are going to be lucky if I get to it first." Lorcan chuckled, a mischievous twinkle in his eye.

Mafdet hissed and took off running.

Lorcan instantly took off after her, laughing before changing to his wolf form to see if he could beat her. What was being a little more tired if it meant more bacon?

"Oh, you heathens!" Sierra huffed as she attempted, rather unsuccessfully, to keep up.

Mafdet just responded by turning into a ginger shorthair cat and rushing down the halls.

Lorcan darted down the halls after her, skidding around a corner.

Sierra cursed in language best left unsaid as she echoed from much further behind them, not really equipped to run in her more delicate outfit.

Lorcan more then likely almost tripped more then one person as he raced after Mafdet, not being too careful.

Mafdet darted into the dining hall line, poofing back into her normal form. "Elegance and grace wins the race." She ruffled her still ginger hair as her ears twitched at the movement.

Sierra's curses quieted down a little as she approached the actual dining hall, almost a full minute later.

Lorcan shifted back to his human form with a chuckle. "Yeah, yeah, not all of us can be a cute little kitty cat."

"Sounds like a you problem."

Sierra huffed and puffed. "Both of you are getting your lawn chairs set on fire. By a mysterious force no one shall ever know about."

Mafdet's ears drooped. "Sierraaa. Don't do that."

Lorcan snorted softly. "Mysterious force, eh?"

"Super duper mysterious," she nodded confidently, bring out her pet crystal ball Cthulhu and patting it. "Look, the mist and fire works in mysterious ways. Oddly convenient ways... but mysterious."

"I'll let you keep your ham if you tell the mysterious ways to leave my chair be." Mafdet stood on her tip toes to try and make better eye contact.

"Hmm but I like the sausage. Would you trade your sausage for my ham?" Sierra hummed.

Mafdet nodded.

"Lorcan, you have a good offer, too?

Lorcan gave her a grin. "Well, I do still have that A plus, don't I? I'm pretty much teacher's pet today, that should get me a free pass."

Sierra huffed. "That's a low blow from the Low Can."

Mafdet snickered. "Low Can. Looks like you lost your teacher's pet status."

Lorcan pretended to pout. "Awwww." He whined before grinning again "Oh well, bacon is better then lawn chairs."

Sierra grumbled. "I can give the teacher's pet status back to anyone who lends me sausage."

"Fine, you can have some of my sausage. You can't have the bacon though."

"I'll take that deal." Sierra offered a hand. "In the name of Cthulu, so mote it may be."

Lorcan chuckled and shook her hand. "Yeah, sure, that."

"Yay, yay. We're all friends again! Let's get food." Mafdet grinned as she grabbed a tray.

Lorcan quickly snatched up a tray right after her. "Great idea. I've been waiting all morning for this."

"Is that bacon I smell?"

Lorcan grinned as he heard Blair's voice. "It is indeed, lad! Want to come get some?"

The boy heaved a sigh and moved to join them. "Might as well." He gave Lorcan a side-eyed look. "All the yelling and running woke me up, so..."

Lorcan chuckled a little. "Sorry 'bout that bud."

Blair grunted and picked up his own tray, not looking at Lorcan. Lorcan patted his shoulder gently. The boy sent him a dark look, as if to say 'don't touch me'. He simply grinned and raised the hand that wasn't holding the tray in surrender.

"Sorry, sorry, calm down there." He chuckled.

"I am calm." Blair rolled his eyes and turned to head in the direction of the bacon smell.

He followed with a chuckle, eager to get breakfast. "Nice to meet you then, calm."

That earned him another look and roll of the eyes before Blair collected his breakfast, then headed off to find somewhere to sit. Probably a quiet corner. Blair was odd like that. Very much the loner.

Lorcan shrugged a little and got his own breakfast, managing to sneak extra sausage and bacon onto his tray so he could still have what he wanted while giving some to Sierra so she wouldn't burn his lawn chair. He glanced around to see where Blair had gone before noticing him over in the corner with the least amount of people and headed over to sit with him. If Sierra wanted her sausage she would have to follow or accept it afterward when it was cold.

Lorcan headed over and set his tray down at the table before sitting across from Blair. Blair scowled at him and then focused on his food, picking at the bacon carefully. Lorcan noticed the emptiness of his plate after a moment and put a few more slices of his beloved bacon on Blair's tray. The kid sent him an odd look and then went back to picking at his bacon, ignoring the few slices that Lorcan had added. Lorcan sent him back a kind smile instead of his usual mischief laced grin. It earned him yet another eyeroll.

"You really should eat just a bit more." Lorcan hummed. "Dhampir or not."

Blair sent him a glare and kept picking at his food. "Not hungry."

"Probably because you've gotten used to not eating much, lad." Lorcan reasoned. "Have you at least had enough blood to make up for it?"

That comment earned him a glower. "None of your business."

"Sorry then, calm. Didn't mean to upset ya." He replied, picking up one of his remaining slices of bacon and eating it. Blair eyed him a moment longer before turning back to his plate and continuing to pick at his bacon. Lorcan finished his bacon before moving onto his ham and sausage, making sure to leave a bit of the sausage to one side for Sierra. He wasn't sure when she'd come and swipe it but knew she would eventually. After all, they had shook on Cthulu, whatever that meant. He didn't dabble too much in the magicky stuff.

After another moment of silence, Lorcan decided to try and make one more attempt at conversation.

"Anything interesting happening as of late? Any new languages you've decided to pick up?"

Blair sighed, very deeply. "German," he said, frowning. "And Italian."

Lorcan nodded with a bit of a smile again. "Both of those could be very useful. Are you enjoying them?"

The kid grunted and popped a piece of bacon into his mouth, chewing before responding. "Too easy. My actual vet classes are harder."

"Ah, I could imagine." Lorcan nodded understandingly.

That earned him a shrug. "Still easier than your job, I imagine."

"Eh, I'm not so sure about that. Hanging out with you kids certainly makes it easier."

"Maybe." Blair snorted. "You wanna learn about the chemical compounds that make up most medicines and how they affect human or animal patients?"

Lorcan blinked then chuckled. "Sure but it'll probably go way over my head."

"That was the point," Blair said, somewhat dryly. Maybe even with a hint of sarcasm. He went back to picking at his bacon.

Lorcan just shrugged. "Hey, I still have the energy but I certainly don't have the knowledge hungry mind I used to. You can't blame me."

That earned him another snort. "You certainly try hard enough."

"I do try!" Lorcan protested. "If you wanted to explain I'd at least try to understand. Probably wouldn't be much help though."

Blair turned to give him an amused stare. "That was the point."

Lorcan sighed but was at least happy to see Blair amused for once. "I see."

The kid turned back to his plate right as Sierra swept by, swiping the sausage from Lorcan's plate with a little giggle.

"I'll be collecting that, thank you."

Lorcan chuckled a little. "Of course. As long as you don't burn my chair."

"Would only dream of it twice a day don't worry!"

Blair snorted, rolling his eyes at the pair. "If I didn't know better, I'd swear you two were children..."

Lorcan chuckled with a shrug. "Life's no fun if you give up all of your youth."

Sierra giggled. "Define children."

The kid just glanced over at her, raised an eyebrow and then promptly went back to picking at his food.

"That's what I thought." She giggled.

"Aw, leave the lad alone, Sierra, he's eating his bacon. That should always be done without trouble as to enjoy it fully," Lorcan explained. Blair glanced over again, frowning at him.

"I'll accept that." She huffed but nodded.

Lorcan simply sent Blair a grin from across the table before looking at Sierra again. "Thanks"

She grinned. "Of course. As long as proper offerings of sausage are made."

Lorcan gave a dramatic sigh and scooted another piece of sausage to the edge of his plate for her.

Sierra beamed and snatched it up. "Thank you, kind sir."

"Yep," Lorcan nodded. "I would say anytime but I really don't want you stealing my sausage all of the time."

Sierra huffed, clutching her heart. "And here I thought you liked me."

Lorcan laughed. "I was joking. For the most part anyway."

Sierra narrowed her eyes. "I'll believe you for now."

"Thanks." Lorcan chuckled and quickly finished the rest of his food before she could steal any more sausage or convince him that he owed her some. Blair's plate slid across the table towards them and when Lorcan looked over, Blair was looking the other direction like he hadn't noticed the plate moving. Lorcan squinted at him for a moment before slanting Sierra a smug look.

"Oooh, more foodd!" Sierra beamed. "Cthulu is kind today."

"You've had more then your share already, missy. This isn't for you." Lorcan chuckled.

Sierra huffed but left it alone.

Lorcan grinned and ate a bit of one of the pieces of bacon but not too much in case he could still convince Blair to eat a bit more. So far he seemed to be pretty successful in gaining companionship with him. He nudged the plate back towards Blair, earning an unreadable look from the boy. Who then turned away again.

Lorcan then gained an idea. With a grin, he shifted to his wolf form and tried to nudge the plate a little more towards Blair again. Maybe he would be more inclined to eat now that he seemed like more of a friend and less of a parent in his wolf form. The kid's eyes darted towards him and then to the plate, then back to Lorcan. A moment later Blair seemed to relax a little, shoulders dropping. He seemed a little less tense now. Lorcan picked up on these cues immediately and his ears perked up, tail wagging slightly under the table and thumping against the chair. Blair rolled his eyes and reached over to tug the plate closer. He eyed Lorcan for a moment before deliberately picking up a piece of bacon and popping it into his mouth, eyes narrowing in clear suspicion. Lorcan tried to play it cool but his own tail betrayed him by thumping louder against the chair as it wagged.

Blair snorted at them and popped another piece of bacon into his mouth. "You're such a giant puppy."

Lorcan didn't care much about being called a puppy. If anything, at his age, that was a good thing. Either way though, he was just glad Blair was a bit more relaxed and happy now. He and the rest of the wards happiness and well being were always Lorcan's first and foremost priority.
