I'm concerned mostly with what you're impressions are of the gryphon and the Lord at the end of this piece. Any other technical feedback is welcome.
I will be writing notes on this inside the story, pay them no heed.
The gryphon landed on the grounds in front of the mansion. It was midnight, but the gryphon was confident that he was in the right yard. There were few nobles in this area of country and Reynolds Coat of Arms was gardened into the lawn.
The night was still and peaceful. It was just how he wanted it to stay. If possible, he wanted to be flying before dawn. The gryphon walked across the beautiful lawn and banged the knocker on the door. He kept hammering it, until the door opened. It was a servant.
"I must speak with Lord Reynolds," the gryphon said.
"My lord, Lord Reynolds is-"
"It is all right Norman," A man’s voice said from the top of the stairs. Lord Reynolds descended down the stairs.
“Will the library suit you?” Lord Reynolds asked.
“Lead the way,” the gryphon agreed.
The library was large enough for the gryphon to walk around comfortably. The wall was lined with bookshelves. The guest chairs had been moved to the side, with papers stacked on all of them but one. The one behind the desk bore its master.
“What is your name Lord Gryphon?”
“I’m known as Lord Adair, but you may simply call me Adair. Unless you wish to continue with the usual formalities-”
“I see no need to continue. It can be quite exhausting,” Lord Reynolds stood up from his chair and turned towards the window. “What can I do for you Adair?”
“I’ve come to look for a keeper. I understand you have two sons.”
“Thomas and Ronald; Thomas is the elder,” Lord Reynolds added.
“I wish to meet them soon. You must have questions.”
“A few.”
“Ask then.” Lord Reynolds hesitated.
“What are you looking for?”
“I’ve told you this; I’m looking for a keeper.”
“What are you looking for in a keeper?”
“I will not say. I beg you ask no more on that subject.” Lord Reynolds closed his mouth and turned away to look out the window.
“Tell me about yourself.”
“I am a gryphon in the service of His Majesty King Roland.”
“Is that all you will say on yourself?” Lord Reynolds said, turning back to the gryphon.
“What more do you require?” Lord Reynolds pushed it no further.
“What will the fate of my son be as a keeper?”
“I think you shouldn’t inquire at all. It’s better not to know than to worry.”
“But I do worry. Are the dangers that bad?”
“They can be, but they are few and those moments pass quickly. Being a Keeper is a very challenging job, but it is still a prestigious one. This would not be the case if it was safe.” Lord Reynolds began pacing for a few moments before turning towards the gryphon again.
“What happened to your last Keeper?”
“He is gone, ask no more of him.”
“Is my child safe with you?”
“No, but he will never be in danger without me. Ask your last question.”
“What will become of me?”
“I was wondering when you would ask that question.” The gryphon leaned in and whispered into Lord Reynolds ear. His eyes went wide at the number.
“Are you sure you don’t want both of them?”
“Peace Lord Reynolds, summon them in here and close the door behind them.”
