The following are the winners - along with their entries - of the contests that took place during the Grand Re-Opening.

FLASH FICTION

magicman for:

He fell.

The wind rushed through his hair as the scene passed before him, a blur of colors and textures that burned into his vision. He felt his shorts ripple fiercely in the wind as he fell helplessly through the air. He didn’t want to think about what was coming up to meet him, but he knew it was inevitable.

He took one final intake of breath before he reached his destination. He closed his eyes and braced himself. He knew it would all be over soon enough. But a few moments stretched to an eternity as he plunged to the earth below. His chest filled like a balloon with overwhelming fear, and he desperately wished he had reconsidered. But now it was too late. Too late to save himself.

And with an ice cold splash, he landed in the pool beneath him. He sank five feet into its depths before realizing he had to swim back up. He kicked his legs hard as he swam hurriedly to the top. Then he broke the surface, gasping in large amounts of air.

He was never going to let his friends convince him to jump off the high dive again. Ever.

POETRY:

xanthan_gum for "Through Oyster Walls"

Roses tinted red my fingertips,
you delve into my soul on evenings that never
seem to morph into nighttime –
We merely drift to the slumber with
a violet (violent) sexuality haunting
each word uttered in silence.
They shake, bewitching squandered spices
rising from their position on alleyway doorsteps
and sweeping through town, an Angel of Death.
But it bites, bitter, as you are churned with
myriad episodes relived and resurrected,
ones better left dead and swathed in the skeletons,
torn of their hangers and buried six feet under.

Every whisper over coffee, over flowers and
the blooming summer afternoons wisp away in smoke and fire,
for you drive a deep desire feeding my fortitude
shoveling past this romantic dredge because I –
I am a grave robber of this treasure and you
sparkle pearlescent on your coffin walls.

CONGRATULATIONS MAGICMAN, XANTHAN_GUM, AND EMMA!

I really like magicman's story; you don't really see the ending coming, and that ends a humorous twist to it. Plus, the descriptions are really good and the story itself is a great example of flash fiction.

Congrats guys! It's well deserved. I say go find the nearest... er wait... I guess you three can't do that because age won't allow you guys yet, lol. I forgot.

Dtill, go find tons of junkfood then, and treat yourselves rotton. Har, har. (Note the pun was not intentional. :))

Nate, it's merely a natural reaction to having something dropped on your toe...

Emma- Yummy sketch. :D The lady in the foreground is really well done.

Gummy- You've got a brilliant way with words- which shows in everything, not just in this piece.

MagicMan- Made me laugh. Which is especially impressive given that it's flash fiction...

Good work everyone! Sorry I couldn't be there.
Sing lustily and with a good courage. Beware of singing as if you were half dead, or half asleep; but lift up your voice with strength.
