1. LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
When was the last time you sat down and wrote a journal entry? On paper, with a pen or pencil, in your own hand?
At one time, keeping a daily journal of your thoughts was a sign of distinction. People used to sit down at their desk next to a flickering candle with a quill pen and write in elaborate calligraphy about their day. Some people just recorded the weather, or mentioned how their crops were doing. Others wrote about religion and government. Most wrote about friends and family.
A blog isn't a journal, and a Tumblr certainly isn't. Journals are a way for us to make sense of the day. They can also be invaluable tools to you in the future as they allow you to trace your growth across the years. Future generations may also find them helpful; many scholars refer to Thomas Jefferson's journal when discussing weather patterns in the 18th century.
If you don't have one yet, go buy a journal. Something good and heavy that will last. Keep it by your bed with a pen always ready, and spend just 10 minutes a day writing in it. It will help you improve as a writer, and you'll thank yourself for it in the future.
