A Different Kind of Prison

Bang! The sudden jolt on my door sends me spiralling to my feet, blinking my eyes rapidly. There is another set of bags on my door and my eyes focus on the small white clock pinned on the wall across from my bed. When I see the time a sigh escapes me. I must have overslept and now the soldiers are here to pick me up and take me to the common room with all the others.

"Hey!" calls a soldier from outside my door, "Hurry it up in there!"
I shake my head, irritably sending a spiral of too pale blonde hair in every direction as I grab the orange slacks from my dresser and pull the matching orange top from another drawer.
A minute later I am pulling a brush through my hair and walking out the door to come face to face with several soldiers. Mentally I shake my head. The amount of my "escorts" has grown in number since yesterday. maybe even doubled.

Each and every one of them is holding a gun, pointing at the door. At me. I squeeze my eyes close and gesture towards the hallway.
"Alright, people," I say, "Let’s get this show on the road. I'm just ~Dying~ to socialise." I laugh silently at that and watch as they regard me suspiciously and start to walk me down to the lounge, wishing for just one day I could get rid of the entourage.

I've been here long enough. I even know what's in most of the rooms. But no It's always the same routine. "You have an appointment today," states James- one of my older guards, who's more used to my antics and seemingly less afraid of me.
I almost smile. At least some people care to keep me informed. "Oh, goodie. Another session of being poked and prodded..." I mumble under my breathe, and stop as we reach the door of the Common room.
One of the guards prods me in the back with the butt of his gun and I let out a light giggle just to annoy him. "After you, princess," I chime.
He aims another strike at me but I twirl away and place on hand at the door, enjoying the sight of the soldier fall over his feet when he fails to hit me, "Oh alright. If you insist."
I push my way indoors, before any of them can say anything to chastise me and take a second to survey the scene.

It's the same as usual. The adults are all sitting in a huddle at one table in the corner, talking about some serious issue or another, no doubt.
The little kids are playing games on the floor, the older kids are playing some of the old used board games that they've given us to ~entertain~ ourselves and there are a few people my age sitting around at the tables talking.
I recognise one girl with red hair who's room is right by mine talking to one of the Newer arrivals here at a table in the corner and give a slight wave before I make my way to my usual spot- a table right in the other corner near several large bookshelves- and plunk myself down in a chair, surveying the scene an hoping that if I stare for long enough something interesting will happen.
Probably not... but still.

Draco

Artemis smiled when she noticed that a girl was heading towards us. She grabbed a chair and sat directly in front of me "Hi Artemis." She said. Artemis smiled "Hi Adabelle. This is my friend, Draco." It was kind of funny, I don't remember ever saying that this girl and I were friends. This Artemis girl seemed extremely cheerful considering where she was. Adabelle reached out and shook my hand "Nice to meet you." I nodded. Suddenly I heard a light bang on the door (which nobody else seemed to notice..or care), the door swung open and a girl stepped through laughing. A crowd of guards followed her to the door, and one of them were holding their head staring angrily at the girl who was smiling. It didn't take a detective to figure out what happened. The guard slammed the door shut. The girl looked around the room for a moment then pulled out a chair and sat by the wall, staring blankly at the room as if she were waiting for something to happen. I sensed a mischievous aura from her. She could pose a problem...or possibly a solution to one. "So what are you?" Adabelle asked leaning forward over the back of her chair.

"What am I?"

She nodded "Yeah. You know, a demon, mutant, mystic, vampire?"

My body tensed. Artemis held her hand out "Watch this." A bunch of glowing blue threads appeared above her palm and started swirling together, she giggled as I watched in awe. It was a divine display. She quickly closed her hand as a guard walked by then smiled "I'm a nymph."

Adabelle-
I laughed when I saw draco's expression when Artemis showed him her powers, it was priceless. "yeah and watch this" I said as I closed my hand in a fist and opened it to reveal a flame sitting on my palm. I closed my hand again and opened it to show that the flame was gone. I looked at his expression and said "I'm pyrokinetic in other words as well as being part wolf I have a thing for fire"

Adabelle laughed, probably because of my expression while watching Artemis' power. "Yeah and watch this" she said opening her closed fist to reveal a small flame dancing in her palm. A pyrokinetic? I was surprised by this because from her 'scent', I would have sworn that she was a shapeshifter. She closed her hand and the flame was gone "I'm pyrokinetic. In other words as well as being part wolf I have a thing for fire." I cracked my neck. So she's a pyrokinetic and a shapeshifter. Interesting. "It's your turn, Draco." Artemis said turning towards me. I shrugged "It's only fair, I suppose. Adabelle, can you make a flame again?" She nodded opening her hand revealing a baseball-sized ball of fire. I reached over letting the flame jump to my hand. Both Adabelle and Artemis looked at me in a combination of horror and awe. "I have a bit of a thing for fire, too." I quickly clinched my fist putting out the flame, allowing my blackened flesh to regenerate. I studied the room for a moment before leaning forward so my head was blocked from view of everyone else in the room. I opened my mouth slightly just enough to reveal a set of sharp incisors before leaning back in my chair "I'm a Vampyre."

A flash of blue catches my gaze and I snap my head back to the table on the other side of the room to see the red haired girl with her hand up, holding a bunch of glowing blue threads. She closes her hand as a guard walks by and I lean more on my chair watching them.

The other girl laughs and I watch as one of the guards walking though the room pauses to watch her. I tug at a piece of loose thread at the end of my tee-shirt and watch as she opens her hand to show the others something small and glowing. I turn my attention back to the guard and laugh silently as his eyes almost pop out of the back of his skull.

Guess today isn’t going to be as boring as I originally thought then. Still it’d be a shame if they got caught. I wouldn’t have anything to watch anymore except for a bunch of kids playing checkers in the corner.

I shake my head and look towards the food cart in the centre of the room, deciding to get up and grab some mint cookies. Preferably the ones without the meds in them.
As I approach the table I see the girl makes fire appear again and watch as it pops from her hand to the guy’s hand. So they can both use fire... hmm...

I grab a packet of cookies from the table and begin to sort through them. The medicine cookies always look a bit grainier then the real ones and if you eat too many of then they’ll put you to sleep... and the doctors here thought nobody would notice.
I keep my eyes on the guard approaching that table as I take a bite out of the cookie in my hand a slight smile appears on my lips.

The guards one of the new ones. He’s probably hoping to catch somebody out and get some sort of reward for ~outsmarting~ a monster.
I shake my head. It’s a pity we’re not as stupid here as they’d like.
That’s when I decide to do something. It’s too quiet in here anyway and the room is filled with all kinds of depression. Somebody probably got taken away this morning before I got here. Maybe it’s their turn.

Keeping my eyes on the guard I project an image of a man dressed up in this stupid orange uniform and place him at one of the windows. Pulling at the bars, even. The guard drops his gaze from the table and starts to march towards the window and my little illusion pulling out his gun.

I pick up another cookie, and watch as a few people turn to stare at him. Yelling at some non-existent person to get away from the window.
“Step away from that window, freak!” the guard yells but I just keep the man pulling at the bars. I smile and make one of them crack. The guard pulls out his gun and begins to fire.

A lot more people begin to look up at that point. People are moving away from the tables near the window as the glass begins to shatter.
I shake my head, and put on an expression of shock as the other guards begin to move in to restrain the other guard. That’s when I close my eyes and make the man at the window disappear completely.
I take another bite of the cookie and drop it into the bin. These things aren’t as good as they used to be.

I look up from my desk at the sound of shattering glass to see one of the guards shooting at an empty spot in front of the window and shouting threats.
But there is nobody there.
A few other guards have to come in and take the gun off him before they drag him away, still yelling threats.

I look around the room, searching for clues for what might have happened. I bet it was somebody in here... seeing as the only table near that were the Guard’s table and a few seats for the scientists.
I now wish I’d been paying a little bit more attention to what was going on around here in the last few minutes...

Suddenly a new chain of guards come in and start pointing at the damaged window in disbelief. They start ushering people to the other side of the room. Everybody seems mostly clueless to what happened and I feel like laughing at the confused faces of the guards.
I scan the room again and my gaze lands on a girl about my age staring off at the guards with content look on her face before she turns away and follows the guards towards the left side of the room.
Suddenly somebody prods me in the back and I spin around in my seat to come face to face with a guard with an extremely pissed look on his face.

I almost laugh at him, as he growls out, “Other side of the room. Move. Now.”
Slowly push myself out of the chair, quickly decide not to hit him this time and stroll casually over to the glass-less side of the room. I’m about to sit down at a table when my eyes catch onto the pale girl again and I decide to go over and say hi... and maybe see how she did whatever she just did.
EVERY DAY MIGHT NOT BE GOOD...
BUT THERE IS SOMETHING GOOD IN EVERY DAY.

The guards begin motioning for everybody to move away from the right side of the room, so that they can “investigate” and slowly I make my way to the left wall, where the fewest amount of people are gathered.
After a few minutes they start cleaning up the glass and talking in what they think are quiet voices.

As if they don’t realise that most of us “freaks” can hear them as if they were yelling it in our faces.
I slump against the wall and just listen to them for a moment.
“It was probably brought on by one of them. God knows how we survive in a place like this...” the voice carries over to me and I roll my eyes.
How they survive? What about us “freaks” over here. I probably would’ve died of boredom years ago if it weren’t for “incidents” like this.

I push myself to the floor and pick up a chess piece from an abandoned game, circling it between my fingers and waiting for everything to calm down a bit.
A lot of the people in the orange suits like myself seem excited about what happened. Like this could be a good opportunity to get out.

I shake my head, thinking “Oh, I wish. But we’re going to need something more than a broken window to get out of this place.”

Adabelle-
The guard was being dragged away and me and Artemis were in fits of laughter and Draco laughed to it was just too funny. Fact is it was either an astral projection or an illusion but it didn't matter whoever was responsible for it was a genius and I would love to meet them. "move it freak other side of the room now" a guard had begun shoving me to the other side of the room and really annoyed me and that ment this might not end well. I growled at him

Nate

I held my ear to the door and listened.

Dr. Cordello whispered, "Be careful. Can you feel the tension in the air? This prison is a bomb waiting to explode."

"What do you mean?" Mom asked.

There was a sound of a stool being dragged somewhere, then the Doctor said, "Now they can't hear us."

"They watch you too?"

"They watch everyone. Don't trust anyone, Freya. Maya's not the only one at risk. Yes, she's the reason that you and Nate are here, but she's not human and will be accepted by the other prisoners wherever she ends up. Humans won't be."

I jerked my head back and flinched, looking at my little sister. I knew Maya was the reason we were here, since we hadn't been taken until she was born, but not human. She met my eyes and cocked her head quizzically. I shook my head and listened again.

"...Maybe there's a way you and Nate could leave," Dr. Cordello whispered.

"It'd mean giving up Maya, wouldn't it?" Mom asked. I bit my lip in fear, unable to imagine life without my sister.

"Yes. But we know the two of you are human. They know."

"I..."

"You wouldn't have to decide today. The chance remains open...forever, really. When Maya's eighteen, I believe they can legally take her from you and kick you out anyway. Nate, too."

Then I heard the sound of the stool again and realized Mom was going to leave. I grabbed Maya's hand. "Run! I'll tell you what they said later."

We dashed down the hall into the main room, which seemed a lot more lively than usual. Probably new arrivals today.

We needed an explanation for why our faces would be flushed from running when Mom came in. I grabbed Maya's shoulder. "Tag! You're it!" Then I dashed across the room, hearing her giggles behind me. And here's my excuse.

After a guard started to suddenly shoot at the window, the chaos began. Guards were pushing everyone to one side of the room. When one of the guards shoved Adabelle, she growled at him. I sat on a chair which a guard placed for me without any rebellion (too early for that. I hadn't found out what I came to yet.) then started to observe the others in the room. The new-comer was the cause of the trouble, she sat in the group laughing under her breath. Illusions... Knowing this made me wonder just how skilled she was with this...ability.

Adabelle-
I was livid. How dare that stupid guard shove me and how dare he call me a freak. I didn't notice how angry I was until Artemis tried to pull me back to prevent me from getting punished. She reached for my hand and immediately winced "adabelle, you burned me!" I realized I was burning up when she accused me. "I am so sorry Artemis, that jerk over there shoved me. And you know I can't control my anger very well" I looked over to Draco who sat staring at someone and laughing.

~London~

With another glance around the room I throw the chess piece in my hand down and sigh as I see one of the guards in the room trying to manhandle another one of us "monsters" and force her over to the other side of the room.

~Stupid Guards~

It's the same girl from the table before. The fire one, and silently I stand watching and they make their way to this side of the room. I turn away for the briefest of seconds laughing under my breath when I feel pinpricks on the back of my neck and realise that somebody is staring at me.

I look back around and see the boy from the table staring right at me and for a second I hold his gaze before I curve my mouth in a wide grin and nod at him.

I turn back to look around the room again rolling my eyes to see that most of the aderenline of the people has died down and everybody has fallen into a similar routine as they had before.

I look back over at the others and decide to go over and say ~hi~.
