So. Because Disney are a little bit stupid, this movie came out months later on this side of Atlantic than the other. A friend and I, decided to have some good, old fashioned quality time where we would eat ice cream and watch girly movies and just bask in the fact that life is good, decided to go see it.
Yes, we did feel a little out of place, since we were the only people over the age of about eight that weren't parents. But still. We watched it.
I, for one, loved it. The music is wonderful, the story is brilliant- there's a princess called Charlotte (heehee!) and a dog called Stella (which I figured is a reference to A Streetcar Named Desire, this being New Orleans and all).
I'd like to know what you guys thought about it, if you saw it. Did it live up to the legacy of Disney films?
I've heard stories that it was only made so that Disney would have a black princess. And, okay, fine, if people are petty enough to complain that Disney are racist because they've never had one, why shouldn't she be? But then I also heard that people were complaining that racism wasn't well enough explored in the film. I think the response went something like this: "This is a world where frogs are friends with alligators. Get over it."
The story was light-hearted and sweet, the characters fresh, the music jazzy and awesome, and the villain totally terrifying. Basically, it got a thumbs-up from me. Although there was a surprising amount of sexual innuendo in it. Not that we particularly minded, but it was G-rated, so it was kinda funny.

It was really cute, and it was one of those clever movies that pleases children and adults. -
I really liked it! I thought it was cute. I was telling Mama Hut about how much I liked it, and she didn't want to tell me (though she did anyway) that Disney's probably not going to do another movie like it. It didn't get as many sales as the Pixar/Disney movies do now. Which sorely disappointed me. I hope that's just a rumor. I'd love to see another new classic-animated Disney film come out.
The villain was fantastic, and the music is so catchy! I loved it. You can still tell the differences between this movie and our classic favorites, how PatF is much more modern. But all in all, I really liked it.

Jasmine was Arabic, I think. It took me a lot to figure out who was French, but then I got it.

I wouldn't say Belle counts because even if she's french, she's still Caucasian. I think It's more skin tone that Disney was getting criticism for.

I just saw it a couple of weeks ago and I thought that it was great. It represented classic Disney. The style of the characters, the music, and the plot reminded me of movies like Beauty and the Beast and Little Mermaid. It was a nice change to see Disney get back to their roots.
