Main Purpose?

30 posts in this topic.

  1. Okay... this should probably have been posted in the "setting up" part of the character devlopment, but oh well! Late is better than never. ;)

So! You have these lovely characters and their goals somewhat planned out. Good!

So what do you want your main story to be about? What do you wish to accomplish with it?

    Post your answers here!
  2. What is your purpose or mine, in the story of life? A character in perfection is a representation of a real human being. The more closely it resembles a real human being, the more perfect and complete it is as a character. If we can't define ourselves or our story or purpose in life by our emotions, our occupations or events that have happened in our lives, then how can we define a character that way, who has achieved the goal of being most like a real person?
  3. Snoink, are you talking in terms of theme, or like a major event? I don't quite understand the exercise. :?
  4. Fineena's main purpose is to get her family over to America. Events lead up to it, such as meeting Peter and Bridget, working jobs to earn money, finally writing for the newspaper for Peter and for the World under a pseudonym. It's amazing how it just came out. I think I need another element to my story to make it complete, but I might have discovered it: Fineena needs to get over the death of her love and best friend, Sean. I started writing in her journal one night and I was just like WOW when I discovered she had that. I couldn't believe I hadn't discovered it before!

    Themes! :D
  6. Themes, eh? Why didn't you say so?

    Theme 1: Distance

This will also be the title, as it refers to the theme. Distance is present in a lot of ways: In the literal distance between characters [and creatures lol], but also the distance between Sangha and Makata, and Camilla and Carl. These two types of distance are mixed with each other, to create a stronger effect.

    Theme 2: Khmer Rouge

Sangha was born in Cambodia, and lived through the Khmer Rouge's rule, but eventually escaped alive. The events in my story are sort of parallel to those that happened to Sangha in the 1980's, and he is fully aware of it. He learns a lot about himself and his great grandson through comparing the two events.

Urghh, I'm positive I had other ones, but I can't remember them now. Maybe I'll add them once I remember.
  7. Theme: Power

So everyone says this is a cliché but I'm going ahead with it. Monessa grows up in a household where power is more important than anything else. She hopes to be Mr Tull's apprentice and take his place in Council once she Initiates. But after her master's death she realises that all along he had meant for her to take a different path in life.

I don't know if I did it right or not.
  8. So what do you want your main story to be about? What do you wish to accomplish with it?

    1. Colonial life on the brink of war. It's like feeding the fire (story) kindling to keep it alive, happy and strong but eventually it breaks out into a bonfire.

    2. My goal, if nothing else, is to recreat a period as realistically as possible but on some small level, teach the reader. Fortunately, I think I have a nice balence where the story hasn't become a text book.

Miwa - I thnk you misinterputed the question. ;)
  9. Cassandra becomes anorexic to prove that no one can stop her from reaching her goals. At the same time, she begins (physically) fighting at school.

    What does she accomplish?
Little to none, because she winds up in an insane asylum, deemed as a "danger to herself and others."

Moral: Rebellions can be useful, rebellions can be horrible.
  10. For Shades of Despair:

    Theme: The Power of Hope

Through Teal's adventure we can see how far you can get purely on hope. Teal hopes that her mother is still alive, and it is that very hope that drives her until the conclusion of the story.

    Theme: Evil

No matter who you are, you are capable of evil. But I want this novel to show that there are several types of evil, and that it takes love and understading to see past and expose who a person truly is.
  11. Well, the closest thing I've got for "theme" in my as-yet-untitled work (the only one of all my half started works to not have a title. Maybe that's a sign?) would be:

"You can only push a good man so far"

"Believe in yourself, in who you are, and never give up"

As to the purpose of writing it, the story just seems to speak to me and wants to get on paper. Unfortunately, all that's developed are the characters who carry out said themes and the world only exists as far as their eyes can see, if that. For that, I shall go to the articles you pointed out in Writing Tips Snoink, and work to fix that unfortunate situation.
  12. [speaks of Rina as first person(Rina's P.O.V.)]

Well...Back when I was young, before I went to Ability Pre(pre school), I would sat on the edge of Mt. Olympus and looked at the Earth. I saw crime, misfortune, and most of all, pure evil. (BTW, this era is NOW era)

I would mom if I can go and help them, but she would only tell me to "Wait until you are ready...When you are strong enough." What did that mean?! Back then, I didn't know. But now, I think I do...At least I think so...

Anyway...I asked permision if I could study at Ability Pre. When Grandpa Zeus said yes, I invited Cassy and Jazzy. And so our baby misadventures began...:D

Since then, my powers have been developing and I think I can save the world now...But then again, Dark (shape-shifting darkness hired by Hades to stop all good from happening) and Rockfist (Nick's uncle; and an earthbender so awesome, he turned into rock itself) seem very dangerous and I don't want to ruin my hair...But Jester (clown-addict classmate; hypnotizing powers), on the other hand, is no biggy.

So basically, all I want in life--other than fame, fortune, and my own clothing line--is to finish school and save the world from EVIL! :D
  13. Themes for Firebrand:

Despair and hope, and the power of each.
    Transformation.
    Grief.
    Love.
    Friendship.
    Loyalty.
    Humility.

    Lol, lots of themes.

    Themes for Defective:
    True beauty
    Survival
    Humility
    Compassion
  14. See I have my characters and what they want to do but I'm not sure if they're round enough.
  15. My main purpose or "theme" is obviously love. In the end, I want two of my main characters to be left heart broken, unloved and on the brink of insanity and I want the others to find love, but I want them to realize that the people they wanted to be with have major issues.

    :)

Yes, I do have issues myself, thanks for wondering. Lol.
