    Question To The Group:
    Does anyone have an experience with a poetry slam?
    What is it like?
    Were there judges? If so, what were you judged on?
    Time limitations?
    Proper attire?

    - I'm hoping to throw our town's very first poetry slam in April for Jr. High and High school kids to promote a club at our school and to get potential poets a time to shine, and I have a lot of work ahead of me, so any and all stories and experiences with slam poetry is welcomed!-

    I've done a bit of slam. I like it, but it's not for everyone. Here's how slams typically go:

    There are judges (usually 3 -5), picked randomly from the audience. The judges can judge using any criteria they like. They just give a score 0 - 10 (usually they just write it down and confer at the end of the slam, so no one knows which judge gave what scores). Typically the time limit is 3 minutes, starting from the poet's first word (so usually there's no intro or anything, just straight into the poem), although if you're running the slam you can decide on the time limit (I've been to 2-minute slams and no limit slams, both are cool). Usually one of the judges has a little bell or something that they ring when there is 30 seconds left. Usually props and music aren't allowed; just the poet and the microphone. There's no "proper attire" I guess. Maybe in your first slam don't have judges, just make it an exhibition instead of a competition? It might be cool also to have some musical acts or a resident poet perform while the judges are adding up scores instead of just sitting around.
