Pantoum Challenge: Poetry

5 posts in this topic.

  1. Calling to the stand one of the old and fit benefactors of Challenges, I summon Pantoum! At a weight of four heavy lifters, Pantoum stands strong with a left arm of rhyme, a right arm of quatrains, two feet of refrains, and a turning close for a body!

To understand this monster, you must reach deep within the belly of the beast to see that Pantoum has interlacing quatrains, which are four lines of poetry in an ABAB, BCBC pattern, where B is a set of refrains! That's right folks, B comes Back Around!

The second line in the first quatrain is the first line in the second quatrain, and the fourth line in the first quatrain is the third line in the second quatrain! And they rhyme!

This goes on for as long as the competitors have wind in their gullets as Pantoums have no end in sight! But when you are near your limit, Pantoum will give up!

And in the final leg of the battle with Pantoum, the first and third lines of the first quatrain rear their ugly spines again and the entire last quatrain is pre-written by previous quatrains! We begin with the second line in the previous quatrain, then move to the THIRD line of the Original quatrain, and then back down to the quatrain directly before the last quatrain to retrieve the fourth line! Finally, the beginning line of the poem, line numero uno, is the last line of the entire thing!

    So in other words:

      I am a cat
      you are a dog
      I rhyme with cat
      this rhymes with dog

      you are a dog
      this is a new line
      this rhymes with dog
      I am supposed to rhyme

      this is a new line
and this could be the middle
      I am supposed to rhyme
or it could be the end, middle?

and this could be the middle
      I rhyme with cat
or it could be the end, middle?
      I am a cat

But you can put as many quatrains [four lines of poetry] together as you want, and they do not have to end in the same word, I just did that for ease of example.

Check out the link. It explains it better than this XD

    Good luck!
  2. Challenge Accepted.
Here's my first attempt at a Pantoum!

    Spoiler

    Spring Pantoum

When Spring settles in the air anew
bodies begin to thaw, warm in sunlight
stretch and reach the sky’s deep blue
Could there be a season more right?

Bodies begin to thaw, warm in sunlight
and I remember I love the color green
Could there be a season more right?
When the earth pulls back her Winter screen

And I remember I love the color green
because green means life begins again
when the earth pulls back her Winter screen
we’ll trade snow for floral quilts and rain

because green means life begins again
stretch and reach the sky’s deep blue
we’ll trade snow for floral quilts and rain
when Spring settles in the air anew.
  3. I wrote one too, I'll get it up later.

GREAT JOB ALLIYAH!!! *Lots of snaps*
  4. Thanks Aley! Where's your Pantoum @_@ :D
  5. O=

    Here:

You stared, eyes eating me alive
as I sat petrified by your predatory
hunger. You knew I couldn't strive
for independence or telling my story.

As I sat petrified by your predatory
    prowl, you took my license
for independence or telling my story
    for declaring butterflies and innocents

    Prowl! You took my license,
you burned it with my outline
    for declaring butterflies and innocents
were my world, you spat on me, no glory!

You burned it. With my outline. My story.
I saw you as my god and my savior. You
were my world, you spat on me. No glory
in your anger, whisky breath thick too

I saw you. As my god and savior, you
pleasured in the condemned sins as example
in your anger, whisky breath thick too,
I studied you, unequal, irrevocably in a shamble

pleasured in the condemned sins as example
of how godly you were as I was ruined to participate
I studied you, unequal, irrevocably in shamble
as my soul disposed itself, never to remediate

of how godly you were as I was ruined to participate
slime beneath your boot, and in my own
as my soul disposed itself, never to remediate
these lies with truth. I was yours to condone.

Slime beneath your boot, and in my own.
Hunger, you knew I couldn't strive.
These likes with truth, I was yours to condone
you stared, eyes eating me alive.
