Now that we've seen the first half of this film, what do we think of the story, characters and other elements thus far? Any particular strengths or weaknesses? Why do we think it was so influential and what are we looking forward to seeing in the second half?

I'll start:
I can't imagine what it must have been like to a moviegoer in 1939 seeing this for the first time, if only for the technicolor alone.
Scarlett is a great character, and I love how you feel for her in spite of all her flaws. She feels like a real person and Vivien Leigh is just amazing. Olivia de Havilland as Melanie also deserves more credit. She plays the straight woman to all the insanity but does a good job making Melanie feel three dimensional and grounded.
The music is great and they really make the best use of color that they possibly can. I also think it's rather effective at showing the horrors of war, no matter what side you may be on in any conflict.
Beyond budget, cinematography, etc, I think part of the reason the movie resonated then and still resonates now is theme of survival in spite of hardship, especially considering it came at a time where the US had was just coming of the Great Depression and yet into a world on the brink of war.
We can discuss more after we watch the whole movie, but I'm excited to hear y'alls thoughts!
