Princess Evelyn VI loves her life. She's heir to the throne of Sirila, idolises her father and has everything she could possibly want.
When Evelyn and her little brother Comodore stumble across a hidden door in the old treasury, they knows they have to investigate. What they find there will change their life forever....
Sirila is famous for its enchanted jewels. But where do they all come from?
Behind that door lies a huge jewel mine. The miners are all children snatched from their homes - some as young as seven. Naturally, Evelyn is horrified. Why doesn't her father know about this? Why hasn't he stopped it?
As she befriends two young miners, Amani and Jenna, they seem adamant that it was the king himself who is behind this torture. Evelyn refuses to believe it. Her father is a kind, benevolent king.
Isn't he?
Evelyn knows that no matter what it takes, she and Comodore must get Amani and Jenna, and all the other miners, out of there.
Even if it means killing their father...

So, heavy question right off the bat: Why would Evelyn and Comodore readily have killing their father as an option to save the miners? I mean, he IS their father. Is Evelyn prepared to immediately take the reins of the kingdom if she goes through with this?

I agree! This story has an incredibly interesting premise. Is there a specific point in the story where Evelyn begins to see her father in a different light than she once did, or is it a gradual process?

@Lael I'm so glad you asked that! Obviously they don't want to kill him, but at one point in the story when Evelyn confronts him, he makes it very clear he has no intention of releasing the miners as it would spell the end of the kingdom. She's torn between doing the right thing (killing him) and following her heart (trusting that he can change his mind).
@Saen it's that one point when she confronts him. Until then, despite what she has seen, she doesn't want to believe he could ever do such a thing. When she speaks to him, she realises that he genuinely doesn't care about the miners. -
Since it would "destroy the kingdom" like her father said, how would Evelyn combat that? Would she come up with a better, more ethical way for them to mine for resources - like actually paying workers decent wages and not treating them like slaves?

So I will start off by saying I like the title of your novel, really cool
And now, to my question, if Evelyn actually kills her father, who becomes the next ruler? Will it be Evelyn or Comodore? Considering Evelyn is elder of the two, I think she should become the next ruler, but is she capable of ruling a kingdom? Even though a ruler cannot be heartless, he/she should also have the ability to see beyond emotions and see all facts.
Here, she doesn't seem to do that, since she doesn't believe her father would do such a thing, even though she has evidence and has heard the victim's part of the story. But of course, this can be excused if she is younger than I am assuming she is. Also, what's her age? -
@Saen she hasn’t really thought about that yet, but yes, the solution will probably be getting adults in to do the work and paying them.
@TheWeirdoFromBeyond yes, it will be Evelyn - she’s seventeen and the oldest child. She trusts and loves her father a lot so it’s less of a case that she doesn’t think it’s true, it’s more she’s desperately hoping she’s wrong. -

@Saen Comodore is delighted he isn't the next in line - he never wants to be king.
@Lael Evelyn's quite haughty and can sometimes be spiteful. Comodore's a bit crazy and loves to play pranks on people. There are actually two more siblings - Treasure, 3, and Marilyn, 14. They're not that important to the story, though. Marilyn is very appearance-conscious and always has to have the latest fashion. Treasure is a wildlife nut and has already adopted several beetles and a rabbit. -

So what is life like in the mines? -
From 5am to 7pm the miners have to mine jewels. They get stale bread and pea soup at 9am and 4pm. At 7.30pm three people have to sort all of the the jewels collected that day before they can sleep.
