Lorelai Materson smoothed her skirt as she sat in the chair. These DSA interviews always took forever. Agents wanted to know her entire life story just to say she was still allowed to be a registered necromancer. She hoped she got someone familiar with witches, at the very least. Explaining the Materson family history would take a long time.
But she would do it, just as she’s done so before. Because Lorelai needed to keep her license so she could finish her project.

Ms... Lorelai Materson, is it? We've called you in to ask some questions. Firstly, can you state your name, your current city of residence, and your occupation for the record?
-
Lorelai sighed. “Doctor Materson. Doctor Lorelai Materson. I’m a forensic pathologist at the San Lobato County Coroner’s Office. I reside in San Lobato.”
-
"Right," the interviewer said. "Can you describe San Lobato, and how your occupation is... received by the general public there?"
-
"San Lobato is... a small town." Lorelai's face was entirely blank as she looked at the ground. "The people are poor, many buildings are abandoned and infested with feral ghouls. It's dry and hot this time of year. It makes the streets smell like rotting flesh. As for my job, not many know it. They know the police. They dislike the police. But my job is sort of hidden."
-
"And how does a poor town like San Lobato attract a forensic pathologist?"
-
"Too many people die there for it to be anywhere else. And they don't stay dead. Ghouls and ghosts haunt the town. I get at least five ghoul deaths on my table every month. The most I've ever had was twenty-two."
-
“Wow. And is that quantity normal in your industry, or is San Lobato unusually high?”
-
“It’s higher for a small town.” Lorelai’s fingers tangled around one of her locs. “But low compared to large cities. It entirely depends on your comparison.”
