Character Interview: Neptune and Saturn

182 posts in this topic.

  1. Neptune and Saturn sat together on the small sofa against the wall. They looked practically identical, their skin the same shade of navy blue and their hair the same snowy white, except that Saturn was shorter, and Neptune's eyes were clouded with cataracts. In addition, Saturn's hair was in a high ponytail, both of the sides shaved down, while Neptune's was hidden away by a simple cap. Neither of them spoke while waiting for the interviewer.
  2. The interviewer strode in, threw files around messily, and lounged across from them. She was a tall woman with vitiligo and a peacock tattoo on her neck.

“Alright, let’s do this. Why are you here?”
  3. Saturn sighed and leaned forward, pressing his fingertips together.

"I was hoping you could tell us that, actually. We received a letter in the mail calling us to this location. Do you work for the Prime Minister? Are we under arrest?"

Neptune winced at their brother's words and tinkered with something in their hands. They didn't spare the interviewer a single glance.
  4. “No, you’re not under arrest. I’m just here to talk to you and ask you questions. For instance, why would you be under arrest?”
  5. Saturn glanced nervously at Neptune, who seemed to go rigid at the woman's question.

    "Well, I mean-"

    He gestures at himself.

"It's not exactly legal for us to... exist."
  6. Her eyes lit up. “Fun! So this…” she checked her notes. “Prime Minister, is he trying to ensure your deaths?”
  7. Saturn shrugged.

"No one is quite sure what happens to the Ukayans he catches. Some say they die; others say they're put to work in far-off places. Either way, I'm not very interested in finding out."

He chuckled, looking back down at Neptune. They looked up this time, peering at the interviewer.

"I think they're just imprisoned. Used for knowledge of old weapons and our strange abilities. He wouldn't just throw us away."

They went back to whatever they were tinkering with.
  8. “That’s smart. Evil, sure, but smart. What do you do to protect yourselves?”
  9. "We stay hidden."

Neptune showed what they were tinkering with to Saturn.

"And when we can, we fight back."
  10. “What are you building?”
  11. Neptune looked up again, holding out her little invention.

“A pocket lantern. It runs off of static electricity and a native Ukayan mineral called Lemonstone. You can hold it of you want, as long as you’re careful.”
  12. She took it and gently turned it around in her fingers, inspecting every angle. “That’s amazing! Are you two twins?”
  13. Saturn shook his head.

“No, I’m actually seven years older than them.”

Neptune observed their machine, wringing their hands together.
  14. “That’s a large age difference. Where are you from?”
  15. “Our mother had various... struggles with getting pregnant, hence the age difference.”

Saturn wrung his hands, biting the inside of his cheek. Neptune awkwardly patted his shoulder.

“We’re from the east side of London. Our parents are ill, so we’ve been living with some family friends.”
