My Boyfriends a Moongod - Chapter 2

Chapter 2

"Mia! What have I just said?" Mrs Daynor demanded, and I was startled to realise that I was still in my lesson and almost falling asleep on the desk.

"Umm..."

"You were asleep, Mia! Again!" The teacher shouted, thumping my eardrums "Detention! After this lunchtime!"

I nodded glumly, hanging my head in shame. She carried on yelling at me for another two minutes while the class sniggered. I fell my cheeks’ burn and my jaw was clenched. After Mrs Daynor had finished she wrote my name in big letters on the board, putting DETENTION under it, just to remind everyone what an idiot I was. She carried on with the lesson and I tried to keep up with what she was saying about math equations but my head was still groggy from lack of sleep.

It had been three weeks now since I saw someone outside my window, and every night since then I had had the feeling that someone was watching me, not when I went to bed, but when I suddenly woke in the night I felt like someone else was in the room, someone else was there. I had been clutching my duvet in terror every time this happened, and once I was awake I couldn’t fall back to sleep again, even though the feeling of being watched would soon leave. I thought there might be a ghost in my room, and I was considering going downstairs to sleep on the sofa. I was even concidering jumping into Syds’ bed, even though he doesn’t cut his toe nails so they hurt like hell when he kicks me.

Once maths was over I followed the rest of my class to next lesson, Mrs Daynor watching me like a hawk as I left. I trudged through the busy corridors, keeping my head down and trying not to look like i was on drugs from lack of sleep. I caught up with Charlie outside English and she grinned at me, saying "how was maths?"

"Horrible," I said, sighing heavily "I’ve got detention,"

"You have?" Charlie said, shocked. It was usually her who got the detentions for talking too much.

"Yea, I fell asleep,"

"Mia! You did?"

"It’s not my fault!" I said angrily. "I haven’t been sleeping that well lately,"

"Oh, with that whole ghost thing," Charlie said mildly "Hasn’t it stopped yet?"

"Nope,"

"Well maybe you should get a vicar in, you know, he could get his bible out and start banishing the gooley away," Charlie said, giggling. But when she saw my expression she stopped and said "Its worth a try"

"Hmm,"

We lined up for English, one of my few favourite lessons where I had good grades and the teacher and I actually got along. I went inside and Mr Stewart was wiping the board, getting rid of last lessons work. I sat down next to Charlie and the lesson began. I was soon wide awake when Mr Stewart said we had to write a short autobiography, a day in the life of ourselves. I soon got into the swing of things, my hand writing so fast across the paper that my wrist was hurting. Charlie stared at me, still unable to start her own.

"What’s the matter?" I asked, quickly glancing up.

"I don’t know what to put, I'm never any good at English,"

"Now now, Charlotte," Mr Stewart said, startling us both. He was standing quietly next to us without us realising "you are very good at English, your last homework was excellent,"

Charlie blushed and started batting her eyelids at him. Just to let you know Mr Stewart is gorgeous and about twenty and half the girls in the school are crazy about him, not a middle-aged grump like the rest of the staff. I had never really seen the attraction - yes he had wavy blond hair and a nice face and a nice body, but I much preferred to talk to him about pride and prejudice than stare at him like everyone else did.

"Oh, thank-you Mr. Stewart," Charlie said breathlessly, and she sounded so ridiculous that I kicked her under the table.

"You should be less modest, Charlotte. You are very talented,"

Charlie beamed at him, and when he glanced at me he winked and walked towards the front of the class. I didn’t know what the wink meant but it made me smile slightly as I bent over my work to continue writing, trying to ignore Charlie go on and on about how much he surely fancies her. The lesson soon finished and while everyone else wasn’t nearly halfway through their work I had already finished it, and when I handed it in Mr Stewart smiled and said "I will look forward to reading it tonight, Mia. It is sure to be as amazing as all your other essays you’ve done for me,"

I smiled shyly and went to collect my things, aware that all the girls were looking at me with narrowed eyes. I had no idea why. I didn’t fancy him. Charlie was next and quickly ran over to his desk and handed hers in too and i looked up from my bag to see her giggling and standing rather close to him. He just smiled and nodded like a teacher, oblivious to Charlies efforts.

Lunch was busy and hectic in the dinner hall, some of the older lads were having a food fight and me and Charlie decided to take our pack lunches outside, even though it was raining.

"Over there," Charlie lead the way to some benches that were out of the rain. We sat down and began to eat. Mum had packed me some walnuts which I had no idea why, and then I remembered the conversation we had that morning. Mum had turned into a total health freak in the past week, too busy in her new gym and healthy diet to notice me slumped over the breakfast table in a coma. Syd had noticed though. He thought it was hilarious and kept putting things in my hair while I was passed out. This morning it had been Sellotape.

"You’ve got Sellotape in your hair," Charlie pointed out, and I pulled it out and howled as it ripped my hair out as well.

"Sydney... he thinks its funny. He's the only one who realises that I'm almost unconscious most of the time,"

"Your starting to get bags under your eyes," Charlie said through a mouthful of salad, spraying me with sweet corn. I glared at her as she giggled and brushed the spit-covered salad off my jumper.

"I know I’m getting bags. I look like I'm on drugs,"

"Are you?"

"No!" I said, shoving her as she laughed again "Though I feel really ill... I want to go home..."

"But you don’t have a key,"

"I know," I said angrily. Charlie can forget my birthday (even though we have been friends for eleven years) but she still remembers me losing my key last week when I accidentally dropped it off the side of a bridge while I was walking home. It wasn’t my fault, though mum had yelled at me for so long that even she forgot what I had done wrong. I had been leaning over the bridge so watch the train go by as it always does at four o’clock but my key had fell off along with my bracelet, which dad had given me. I wasn’t sad about the bracelet, it had always been too big for my wrist, but I was upset when I was locked out the house until six o’clock in the pouring rain until mum got home from work. I'm not aloud a mobile until I'm fifteen ("But why mum! Everyone else has one!") So I couldn’t ring. Now Syd has to let me in every day when I get home and he finds it so funny to lock me out and pull faces at me through the door while I'm screaming at him.

"You can come back to mine if you like," Charlie said "Mums off with her new boyfriend to a spa or something, I wasn’t really listening. Well, anyway, you can sleep on the sofa without Syd bothering you. Hey, its Friday, we could have a sleep over!"

"Oh, I dunno..." I said uncertainly. Charlie often wanted to talk all night on sleep overs and her little sister always seemed to walk in on me on the loo... even though I was always sure that I had locked the door...

"Come on, it’ll be fun."

"Alright, I'm sure mum wont mind. And anyway, I don’t want to eat lentils for tea again..."

"That’s sorted then. And because you look like your on drugs from lack of sleep ill let you go to bed early, actually ill make you go to bed early. I can’t have a friends who looks like she’s about to collapse all the time."

"Fine," I grinned weakly "Maybe ill get a proper nights sleep without feeling like I'm being watched all the time."

"Well when I slept around your house I didn’t feel like that, though your brother did insist on knocking on the wall just to freak us out. Nip back to your house after school, grab your PJ’s and toothbrush and come round mine."

"Ok,"

The bell went for the end of lunch and we trudged through the rain towards the art block. I swigged some of my water before going into class and I sat down next to Charlie again as we got out our things.

"Now, well be carrying on with our art projects today," Mrs Williams began, sweeping through the tables like a ballet dancer even though she is the size of a walrus, with whiskers too "and I expect you all to be at least halfway through them now, so in the next two hours I expect to see progress, progress!"

Charlie glanced at me and I had to shove my hand in my mouth to stop myself from laughing. Mrs Williams was a very strange woman, with the weirdest poshest voice in the world.

"Chop chop! Lets begin!" She beamed, and the class started to get the tables ready with newspaper and paint pots. I went over to the wall were my half-finished dragon head was hanging, its eyes lopsided and its gums bare because I hadn’t got around to putting some fangs in. Everyone else had made beautiful mermaids or random monster faces, but I had found a picture in a fairy tale book (one of my old ones that Judy had scribbled on when she was ten) and had decided to copy it much to Mrs Williams disapproval.

"Now, are you sure you don’t want to change it, Mia?" she asked for the hundredth time as I unhooked the huge paper mache head off the wall "Because every other girl is making much nicer ones - you do realise you will have to wear it when you present it to the class next week?"

"I do?" the blood drained from my face.

"Yes, I told you yesterday, though if I remember correctly you were asleep," Mrs Williams said sternly, and I felt myself blush before I said "But I like dragons, you said we can make any mask we want,"

"Yes... but I don’t like dragons..." she eyed the head uncertainly "I dont like serpents or reptiles at all,"

"I promise," I had to hold back the laugh "I wont make it scary, ill make it nice,"

"good," Mrs Williams looked relieved as she walked away to compliment Stacey Marsons’ fairy face. I couldn’t stop grinning as I went back to my table, were Charlie was adding more glitter to her beautiful elf from Lord of the rings, like she was applying makeup to a real face.

"What did walrus want,"

"She wants me to start again, she says she’s scared of dragons,"

"Your not going to, are you? It looks so good, you’ve worked really hard on it,"

"Don’t worry, I told her I wouldn’t make it scary,"

Charlie looked up and saw me grinning, and said "So I suppose your going to make it as terrifying as possible?"

"Yep,"

"So nip back to yours while I go down the corner shop, I don’t know why but I’ve just fallen in love with gummy bears, and they’re the only place that sells them in town. then you come around mine"

"ok, ill leave a note for mum,"

"But don’t you want to ring her?" Charlie asked as we walked down my street.

"No, a note will do," I said. I felt exhausted and I hoped Charlie wouldn’t keep me up all night with her long talks about all the boys she fancies and if she should go on a diet, which she certainly didn’t need to. When we reached my house she waved as I went up my driveway, and I smiled weakly and started knocking on my front door as Charlie headed down the street, an army of gummy bears calling to her.

"Sydney, I know you’re in there," I yelled through the letter box "Let me in!"

He stuck his head on the glass and grinned at me, his nose squashed and his breath on the pane.

"Sydney!"

"You have to say the magic word," he said.

"But the sodding magic word changes every day!" I said exasperated. "Please, its raining, its cold, im your wonderful big sister who always lends you money and if you let me in I wont tell mum about you taking a tenner from her purse yesterday - yes Syd, I did see you! Look, I'm going around Charleys house and I need to get my stuff,"

"Magic word or no entry," Syd giggled, and I punched were his face was and he shot back sharply and my knuckles hit the hard glass, and I howled in pain.

"Are you alright!" Syd yelled, and I rubbed my fingers and said "No you little squirt! Let me in!"

He quickly unlocked the door and I pushed him out the way before he could change his mind and lock me out again. I went to the kitchen and poured cold water over my throbbing hand, Jessy glancing up at me with her big eyes as she chewed on a bone in her bed, Syd following me and mumbling "do you need to go hospital?"

"No," I snapped, flexing my fingers "But if you lock me out again ill throw away your football posters,"

"You wouldn’t!" I looked up to see his face full of horror.

"Of course not you idiot, I'm not that mean," I said, and he looked relieved "But I'm so knackered... I know I’ve been in a bad mood... but ill be better soon after I get some s-s-sleep," I stifled a yawn, and I slumped against the kitchen work top and sighed, smiling at Syd "I look a mess, don’t I,"

"Yup,"

"Thanks," I said, trudging towards the stairs and dragging my feet "So tell mum ill be around Charleys tonight..."

"Okaly dokaly," Syd said, bouncing after me "but I'm going around Davids’ now, he’s got a new play station game. I bet its rubbish,"

"Ok, ill be gone in a minute," I said, slowly climbing the stairs. I felt my body getting heavier and heavier with exhaustion, and for a moment I forgot about everything. It was as if the familiar smell of the house and the warmth was pulling me in, making me forget about what I was supposed to be doing. I was so incredibly tired that I undressed and got into my pyjamas, my mind blank, like I was a zombie, and before I knew it was falling through the air and thudding on my bed, out like a light, wonderful sleep washing over me like ocean waves...

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I was aware that something wasn’t right. I felt strange, like I had slept for too long and had woken up years later from a deep coma and everything had changed around me. When I opened my eyes I was shocked to see that night had fallen and moonlight was shining through my window. I was in my pyjamas and was on top of my covers, and I was shivering because I had never bothered to climb under them. For a moment I was confused at why I was there, I struggled to remember what I had been doing before I got here. Then I remembered Charlie waving goodbye to go get gummy bears... and then it all came flooding back to me and I sat bolt upright and began breathing fast. I had fallen asleep! She was probably furious with me... but why didn’t mum wake me up? Then I remembered Syd leaving, and he had probably rang mum before to tell her that I was going around Charleys, so she didn’t know that I was here... no one did. Syd must have thought that I had left after her had gone around Davids’ next door...

I started shivering again and I realised that my window must be open. I couldn’t remember leaving it open before I fell asleep... then I froze. I realised that the feeling was there, the horrible feeling that I was being watched was hanging over me like a pair of eyes boring into my skin. I gripped my elbows with my fingers and slowly turned around, looking towards my window.

I had to hold back the scream of shock that was building in my throat. There was someone there, outside my window, staring at me. He was holding onto the window though I saw that he wasn’t really hanging on at all - he was flying! He was hovering fifteen foot in the air in front of me and was grinning at me in the darkness, the kind of grin Syd gave me when he was pretty pleased with himself.

My mouth was hanging open and I stared at him with wide eyes, frozen. He was still there, he wasn’t disappearing or anything, he was staring at me and grinning still like he was pleased to see me. It took me a moment to get my breath back and I whispered through dry lips "Who are you?"

It was barely a sound at all, even I hardly heard it, but he seemed to understand and he said back "Neptune," in a heavenly voice that made my heart race. He was real, he couldn’t be a dream. I didn’t have enough imagination to dream up this, no one did.

"I'm sorry I startled you," he whispered, though I heard every word "I was watching you sleeping and I saw you shivering, so I tried to shut the window but I guess I made too much noise."

"Why were you watching me sleeping?" I felt faint, and I was still shivering but mostly with shock. He didn’t look dangerous at all, in fact I thought he had the most trusting face in the world and I couldn’t stop staring at it. He looked young, like an ordinary teenage boy who I guessed was about fifteen, but there was something different about him that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. His hair was dark, brown I think, his skin was pale white, the colour of the moon, and his eyes were a scorching blue that made me melt. I saw that he was wearing ordinary clothes, all black, and he was still outside my window smiling at me, the soft cool breeze ruffling his hair.

"Well... its kind of hard to explain..." He looked confused for a moment, finally taking his eyes off me.

"How are you doing that..." I said slowly, staring at his body that was floating outside the window "How..."

"Oh, this?" He grinned again and did a somersault in the air, and I jumped back in shock. He came back to my window and said "A gift, I suppose,"

My heart was thudding and I was starting to shake, but curiosity and fear bubbled inside of me and I carefully stood up and moved slowly towards the window, the boy watching me. I stayed a good two metres away from the window and stared at him, hoping to find an explanation for his unusual talent. I took another step forward and peered over my windowsill and looked down, gasping when I saw that he really was flying, the driveway below dark and the air between him and the ground empty of ladders or anything for him to stand on. Up until now i had been praying that this had been some sick joke but this was too strange and wonderful to be a joke...

"Mia," the boy said, his voice soft "Let me show you..."

I gazed at him, trying to understand what he wanted from me. "Show me what?" I whispered

"My world," he said, reaching out as if he was to take my hand. For a moment I was stunned, my mind crazy, but then my fingers began to pull the window open and for a wild moment I was about to take his hand, but then I stopped myself and stepped back.

"this is a dream," i stammered "You cant be real,"

"No, i cant," he said "But dont you forget in dreams? If this is a dream, whats the harm in coming with me?"

I looked away from him, at my bare feet on the dusty carpet. I felt his eyes stare at me and i was too weak and eventually looked him in the eye again, even though i knew it would do me no good.

"Don’t you like dreams?" he asked "Tonight, I'm just a dream..."

I still felt unsure. His voice was very persuasive. I took a deep breath and trying to be brave, I smiled and said "Well... if its just a dream,"

The boy grinned and held out his hand again. I breathed in another deep breath and shakily took a step forwards, reaching out and taking his soft hand. He held onto it tightly and he slowly pulled me through the window, and for the first time I was swear that I was in my pyjamas and it was freezing outside in the chill September air.

"I can’t!" I gasped, standing on my window sill and looking down through the darkness, my hair swirling around my face and my skin covered in goose pimples.

"Trust me," he said, still holding onto me "if your with me, your safe,"

Gracee,

Hello! How are you on this cloudy, ever so cloudy day? Me, I think I have a cold, but never mind that now. To your critique.

Oo, the dialogue punctuation is better. Still, a few things could be tweaked. Here’s a really, really handy link (contents are written by Snoink): article19430.html

So, for example:

Quote:
"Horrible," I said, sighing heavily "I’ve got detention,"

“Horrible,” I said, sighting heavily. “I’ve got detention.”

Notice the periods, not commas. Same here:

Quote:
"Yea, I fell asleep,"

"Yea, I fell asleep."

And here, for example, you have it correct:

Quote:
"Mia! You did?"

And here:

Quote:
"It’s not my fault!" I said angrily.

I know it can be tricky sometimes, but it does make a difference in the story not only from grammar’s POV (yes, yes, we’ll personalize grammar, heh), but also visual-wise. It just looks way better.

Apart from that - eyyyy. I don’t know what I want to do with you. Something bad, methinks. Yes, yes, we all overlook stuff - but capitalize ALL “I’s” and beginnings of sentence. Else all will not be well.

Comma.

See: Blah blah blah COMMA but blah blah. (Exceptions exist and cackle behind are back, but, you know…)

“You’re” is not the same as “your”. “You’re” is “you are”. “Your” is, well, “your”. Follwowing that path:

Quote:
"Alright, I'm sure mum wont mind.

Wont is not won’t.

Hmm. Yes, that and dialogue punctuation. Other than that, you’re story is pretty good : ) You have a very cool cast, the pace is fine, the action and story line flow in a very nice way. Grammar is the biggest obstacle, I guess, but grammar’s a horrid little thing that we all have to kill at some point.

Cheers,
Esme
