I Refuge

Long ago, the land of Ariet was dominated by a race known as the Sunian. They were men- mortal humans with only physical, bodily power. They possessed no conjuring or spellgift.

During the third era of their time began a great war known as the Battle of Kings. It was a brutal and bloody war between the three Ariet empires after their kings declared the ultimate test: whosoever conquered the others would reign supreme king of Ariet.

Fewer Sunians survived than were taken by death. But of those who lived, some had decided to leave behind their torn homes and burnt cities. They searched for refuge-- which they found when they stumbled upon an immense forest none had yet discovered.

The Sunian men quickly began rebuilding their lives within the forest. What they were unaware of, though, was that the Forest was filled with magic, created by the substance itself.

There began to be reports: sightings of small winged creatures, some inexplicably beautiful. People saw horned creatures like horses, humans with the tails of large fish, even trees that moved and spoke.

A fear and unexplained wonder fell upon the migrant dwellers of the Forest. What was this magic that seemed to be found around every corner?

"There were rumors of a great palace concealed by the speaking trees in the Forest. No one who ventured to pass the trees prevailed."

~excerpt from Journals of Faalshire, Liion Pardn

The theory spread was that the Spirit of Faalshire lived on, though said defeated by the last Draghaan. It was often said that she was found at night in dark crevasses of the Forest, and that the magic it possessed was from her.

II A Study of Encounters

After the time that had past, the Sunians made home in the Forest and had kept peace with the magic that surrounded them. Explorers discovered new information regarding other creatures.

The creatures with the tails of fish they called mermaids. Seemingly human, they spoke a language not yet deciphered by men.

The fair animals with the body of a horse and horns made of a rich, stone-like substance the Sunians called Uni-corns. Though they were rare and incredible to sight, they were pronounced immortal and regenerating.

Most recognizable at this time were the small winged creatures, Faeries. Harmless, peaceful, and speaking the language of the mermaids, they were seen in three forms: Spirit, Water, and Elemental. Spirits faeries appeared as faintly glowing wisps resembling a small human. Water faeries formed from dancing water itself; and Elementals were described as the most man-like. The color of the creature normally determined where it was found in its respected element of nature.

Finally, the speaking tree people the Sunians called Trinacht, after a traditional Sunian word meaning 'of the tree'.

III Return

Four ages* later, the Return came upon the Sunian migrants of Faalshire.

*in this text, an 'age' represents a period of approximately one-hundred years.

In this time a historic day was marked. Only was it described as the Return another half an age later.

"It was on no one's mind that this was upon us-- all of the sudden, it was like the accounts of the last Draghaan's attack. But once understood, it gave a sort of...hope. The spirit of the Forest shone brightly around the sky, on every face, sparkling through each eye. And thus, we knew a just rule was to be begun."

1. In this sentence : "They possessed no conjuring or spellgift." Spell gift are two separate words. Please fix this.
2. I know the plot line of your story and the magical tick that it has. It makes me want to read the next chapter.
3. I think that you could work on describing the magical forest a little more vividly and expand your paragraphs to make the chapters me longer.
4.That's my next point. Your chapters or sub chapters need to be way longer.
5.Could you maybe explain to me why quotes from excerpt from Journals of Faalshire are in your writing. I thought that this is only your writing.
6.I like how at the beginning of your story you have the pronunciation key at the beginning.
7.I didn't understand what was happening by III. I got last because you wrote this too fast-paced.
8.Anyways,hope this review helps and keep on writing!

it helps to understand the context- this is a short piece of history and only one chapter in the overall novel. this is chapter 4. i segmented it into three sections of history of the forest. the rest the reader will come to understand in the following pieces of the story. maybe I should have made a note of that...might be hard for other reviewers.

Yes,next time please make a note to read the before chapters in order to understand this one. I was out of the context so I 'm sorry if some of my review comments are not valid or true because I didn't read the before chapters. While reading this I assume, that you have developed your characters and settings in precious chapters so I can't comment on that .Anyways,Happy Holidays and keep on writing!

Hi there fallen here to review your story, although im shocked no one has left a comment on this amazing work yet. So lets start out with the likes shall we?

First off I liked how you started each chapter or section with and excerpt of a journal it adds to the story as a whole. I also liked the before the section pronunciations helped a lot mate.

As the story goes I think you picked the perfect P.O.V I like how you went from the before as to how they got to the forest into the first place and the twist of the forest being magical. Also, explaining the different creatures.

Only cons are I'm starting it as of right now so if the information is in the other chapters then forgive me. As of right now I'm not sure what this story is if its a historic piece telling their tale. if it will continue on to what the men figure out or not. Also, if it is a historian type than the passive voice such as ' was' is allowed if not try to reword your sentences with was to get rid of the extra word was, it'll make your writing that much better.

Other than that I loved this article and can't wait to see what you come up with again, hope this helps you. Happy Holidays!

thank you very much! this is the only chapter (at this point) in this style. the rest of the novel is in third person with characters and all that. this was just a break to explain some history as the story begins to unfold. I appreciate the review!
