She stands in the tentative spring, hair floating behind her in the gentle wind and her dog circling her feet. She wears a powder blue sundress with forget-me-nots that comes midway to her knees and those baby blue cowboy boots. Her father had gotten the dress for her for Easter. I think he wanted her to be his little girl for just a little while longer. And it would’ve looked silly on any other girl, but on her it was perfect somehow. To me, we’d always be that young. We’d always be kids. She holds her suitcase in front of her with both hands and the corners of her mouth turn up in this sad little smile. I could’ve cried.
“Well,” I say, my voice cracking. “This is goodbye, I guess.”
The four of us stand with our backs to the porch and she stands on the bottom step, facing us. Max shadows the doorway, one hand leaning on the frame. At the exact same time, Eric, Mick, and I lean forward and kiss her on the cheek, then pull back grinning. She laughs, lighting up like stars. Becca shakes her head at us.
“Don’t worry.” Eric tells her. “I’m sure Mick will plant a good one on you if you ask him to.”
Becca’s eyes twinkle and she smiles slightly. Mick turns various shades of red. Then a car horn sounds somewhere far away and we’re pulled back out of the moment.
“I guess I’d better go.” Shiloh says softly.
I swallow back something hard and sour at the back of my throat.
Becca smiles at her and gives her a hug.
“Well, I couldn’t have asked for a better roommate. It’s gonna be lonely here with just the boys, you know. You’d better come back and visit soon, or I just might go crazy.”
Shiloh nods.
“I will.”
Mick throws a scrawny arm around her shoulders in a half hug and Eric ruffles the top of her head.
“Keep good on that promise, alright?” Eric says. “We’ll hold you to it.”
“Yeah,” Mick adds in with a grin. “I know you and Jack can’t stay apart for long. Lovebirds never can.”
I throw a glare at Mick.
“Yeah, yeah,well maybe you guys can give these two lovebirds a moment or two.”
Eric and Mick whistle at us, but they all go inside anyway, and I’m left alone with a girl with a suitcase. Her light brown hair fans out behind her and turns golden when spots of sunlight peek through the strands. I give a deep sigh.
“This is goodbye, I guess.” She echoes me.
I don’t say anything, just move forward and hug her hard. I pull back.
A million different phrases hang above me and I try to pull them down, but the words break apart and rearrange themselves, dancing just out of reach. But maybe she knows.

Hello! I've come to be more nosey for Team Rouge and this amazing review day! I will provide you with a delightful review sandwich in just a jiffy
First things first, the things I liked;
The imagery you use in the opening paragraph is absolutely breathtaking! I've been nagging at writers all day to add a little life into their character descriptions and you've been like a breath of fresh air! THANK YOU!
“Becca’s eyes twinkle and she smiles slightly. Mick turns various shades of red.” - I loved this line. It adds the charming quality to your writing and I already want them to kiss!
And now onto constructive criticism;
I kinda wish Shiloh and Jack had kissed. I thought that's what the whole thing was building up to but I was left wanting more. Alas! Maybe this is all a ploy just to get me to read more....it has worked!!
I agree with Dragon about the verb tense but obviously, that's already been pointed out.
I just wish it had been a little longer and even though you're description is amazing, maybe we could have had some more on the other characters.
Good luck & keep writing!

OMG! This is beautiful
Your shift in verb tense in the first paragraph kind of threw me a little. Try rereading it with the present tense in mind and you'll see what I mean. And also I wish there was just a little more description on who's who. I finished this, and don't know what the "blue" girl's name is, nor do I know where this second girl came from. There's Becca and Shiloh, but who's who, and how many people are there? Five? Six? More? I don't know. So could you please fix that?
I didn't think this was sappy at all. Goodbyes are meant to be emotional. If you were trying for sappy you'll have to do a lot harder than that. And that last paragraph was really good.
Hope this helps!
Thanks for the advice, one of the biggest issues I have in writing is changing verb tense and I almost never catch it. My tolerance for romance of any kind is pretty low, so I'm glad it didn't cone across too strong. Let me know if you want me to review anything of yours!
Sure, if you want to. First chapter of my newest work [http://www.youngwriterssociety.com/work.php?id=103940], also currently featured in the literary spotlight, "When I Cry". There's two chapters up right now, but I'm going to add the third soon. And I have a ton of other writing up on Goodreads if you're familiar with that site.

This is lovely! I don't think it's too sentimental at all. Rather, I think the sentiment is just what it needs. The descriptions are beautiful and soft-hearted and really show how the protagonist feels about the girl in the sundress. It's sweet and cute and deep all at the same time. It makes me wish I knew more about this relationship that seems to be within the perfect bounds of romance and friendship. The way you write is fluent and smooth and easy to read, too. Well done! Thanks for posting something so beautiful.
Thanks so much! I'm glad you liked it. That really meant a lot to me, made my day actually.
I really can't stand romance, and don't usually like it, so this is the best I could do. Let me know if you need anything reviewed!
I welcome reviews on any of my work, lol. What I most want reviewed is probably what's in my Phoenix folder.
