Ever Revolving

“Once upon a time, the world was a very scary place…” I blushed as someone snickered in the back of the classroom, but I pressed on anyway, wanting to make a good grade on my presentation. “There were billions of people and almost all of them were sick, not only in their minds, but their bodies too. These people were des…des…destro,” I stumbled over the word even though I had practiced every night for a week, and my cheeks grew even hotter, “destroying our planet and everyone was dying. There were wars, and feminine,” the whole class busted out laughing as I realized my mistake. I felt the tears well up in my eyes as the laughing and insults rang out. I turned, searching for the teacher to save me from this.

As soon as I found his face, everything grew blurry. The harder I tried to make out his face, the more I attempted to focus, the more distorted everything became. The laughing and insults slowed down, the sound in such slow motion that it wasn’t identifiable anymore.

I was terrified, not understanding what was happening. Suddenly, it was like someone jerked me away, as though a hook was in my stomach with an unknown force dragging me away. I ended up in darkness. Smothering, overwhelming darkness that covered me completely. I knew I wasn’t seven anymore and giving a speech in class. It was different and I felt the fear, almost as though it was crawling over my skin. I trembled because of it and it was almost as though the air was rank with the terror of whatever moment I was in. My breath was short and quick, and my brain franticly attempted to deal with the sheer panic that was coming over my whole body.

Things came to me sporadically. Waves of information flooded into my mind, and I struggled to make sense of it all. My ears picked up sounds of hushed whispers and rushed footsteps. The smell of sweaty people, blood and smoke threatened to clog my nose. I still couldn’t see but I could now tell I was lying down, and that I was pressed against other flesh. I tried to squirm away and a hand was placed over my mouth from someone who was lying behind me.

“Lena, don’t.” The woman’s voice was comforting to me, even though it was muffled, and tight with the fear and panic that I myself was feeling. I forced myself to be still. I felt her softly stroke my hair and I could tell from the way her breath was catching that she was silently crying.

I flinched as a tear splashed on my forehead. A dreadful feeling welled up inside me. More than fear, more than panic. It was a hurt that welled up from the darkest pits, as though a monster from the worst parts of hell was reaching up and strangling me. I struggled to breath but the terror of that moment was too overwhelming. I felt myself slipping into an abyss I felt I’d never claw my way out of.

I heard the shushing noise from the woman. The conflicting emotions still raged inside me, but I attempted to draw air into my lungs. I had to for her.

“Momma…momma I’m sc…sca…scared….” I heard myself say without even realizing it. Her arms tightened around me. “I know baby. Just hold on, we will be okay.” Even as she tried to comfort me I knew all was most assuredly, not going to be okay. It was going to be devastating.

I closed my eyes tighter trying to imagine myself anywhere but here. Surprisingly, no tears came. I was too afraid to cry.

I heard the sound of a blast, and felt the splinters from the wood stab into my skin. The last thing I heard before the ringing blocked everything out was my mother screaming for me.

I struggled to get up, but I could not move my legs. In shear panic I fought to be free, but I was pinned from the waist down; trapped with no chance of escaping. A screamed ripped from my throat, then another, and another. Hotness slid over my face from my hair and into my left eye; it was then that I figured out it was from me.

I sobbed hysterically, bloodying my fingers as I clawed trying to escape what I was sure to be my death. It was then that my vision focused enough to see my mother dragging herself towards me. I cried out, stretching my trembling and bloody hand out trying to meet her halfway, even though I could not move.

My breath caught and a strange silence overtook me; I watched as a dark figure closed the distance towards my mother. I thought I had been terrified before, so much so that I was afraid it would kill me, but this…this was worse. My eyes saw what happened, as he put the weapon to my momma’s head and killed her; yet my brain refused to process this as I silently shredded my hands and finger nails, still trying to get to her.

I coughed and felt warmth gurgle in my lungs. Part of me noticed that I couldn’t breathe anymore, most of me didn’t care. Blood and tears streaked down my face as my strength gave out. My body seized up, I let my face hit the ground because I could no longer hold it up. Mom’s eyes still stared at me and I knew that was going to be my last sight as I died. As I drowned in my own blood. Inside my head I screamed. It wouldn’t stop. Couldn’t stop. I was trapped. I was dying. My mother was gone. I screamed at the unfairness; I railed at the evilness that had taken my parents.

I was still screaming in my head. I felt I would never stop. I began to want to dye to find relief. My life was over.

I felt darkness cover me like a thick blanket. Someone’s arms wrapped around me. Everything became hazy and somehow I found the strength to fight. Struggling to be free, I found my voice and my screams filled the night again.

“LENA!” My mind processed the word that was being franticly yelled. “I’ve got you, Lena please wake up, please.” The pleading tone made me fight to clear the unfocused, unsure daze I was trapped in. I tried to breath but still couldn’t force air into my lungs. The panic and terror still held tight, its grip seemingly unbreakable.

“Fight it love, come back to me.” It was as though his voice was my life line. The strength finally allowed me to open my eyes. I saw the darkness and almost retreated back into the hell behind my closed eyelids, but I made myself find him. His voice had drawn me back, his face would keep me.

My eyes connected with his even though it was dark. His grip on my body tightened as I still tried to catch my breath which was limited to gasps. Try as I might I could not get a handle on the panic that still ran through me. My mind suddenly figured out that it had been a night terror.

Breathing was still difficult as I began to shake from the sobs. A night terror, but one from the memories of my life. I felt him cradle me against his body as the tears soaked my cheeks and now his chest. His low voice poured out love and comfort as he whispered into my hair.

WOW........that was Awesome!!!!! I loved the detail and how this story really sucks you in. The mystery of whats happening to the main lady and why it happening. I really want to know where this story goes and how it all ties together. If this was in a book store I would mostly buy it and read it, for it is interesting and unique at least compared to what I have read. Looking forward to reading more of this story.

Hello there, Rebel.

“There were billions of people and almost all of them were sick, not only in their minds, but their bodies too.

Hopefully you'll explain this sentence later on. Is there a time when mental illness is rampant? What's Lena's connection to it?

as the laughing and insults rang out.

There's a little confusion about parts of speech here. "Laughing" isn't a noun, but "laughter" is.

I knew I wasn’t seven anymore and giving a speech in class.

Bit messy. Perhaps it could be rewritten as "I knew I wasn't seven years old- or in class- any more." (You know your own story best, so feel free to word it your own way.)

I struggled to breath

Remember, the present tense is "breathe". Or you could change it to "I struggled for breath." And now I think I'll read the next installment, since you've piqued my interest.

This was very intreging, as it dived right into the action. Your descpritons were amazing and I loved how you had such smooth transitions from each scene to the next. You really shoudl expand this because i think it would be cool it you did :) I really want to read more!
