Could the day get any worse?
“Hey, Melanie!” a cheerful voice greeted me from behind.
“Ana!! How was your weekend? And, I probably don’t have to ask but do you have the-”
“MELANIE HODSON! You should know better than to ask! Yeah, I have the presentation board and I have the pointer that you so desperately needed!” she scowled at me, “ oh and by the way do you work tonight at the barn?”
Oops, I forgot one little thing about Ana. She works at the barn with me. So that makes it her backyard, the school and the barn.
“Yeah, I’m workin’. You? Oh and can you help me sweep? It’s such a boring job when I’m the only one doing it! Not to mention I don’t think the chickens really like my singing all that much.” I grinned at her beaming face.
“Sure! I’d love to help you sweep!” I was surprised at her enthusiastic reaction, “ what time do you have to be at target and wrestling tonight?” she asked.
“Um, I think it’s ten.”
“So I won’t see you tomorrow until after lunch?” Ana asked quietly.
“Nope, tonight I have to do the run, with target, and that usually takes about two hours and then wrestling is about another four.” I sighed and made a face.
“So I guess you’re a spoiled little girl that gets to do anything she wants and she gets to even sleep in…ugh! It’s so not fair!!!” Ana laughed.
“Wait a minute….you’re calling me spoiled? Look at you Miss Ana…. Miss my parents are the richest people in town and what ever I want I get. Hmmmmmm, sound familiar?” Ana scowled at me and I laughed.
“So, who are we working with tonight?” Ana asked as she cut and pasted last minute touch-ups to our three presentations.
“Umm, I think it’s Tanya. If she shows up that is!” I glared down the hall towards Tanya’s turned back. Ana just chuckled.
“Why do you hate her so much? She wouldn’t dare do anything to you. You know that. Even if she did I’m pretty sure you could handle her or your brothers would. I mean so would my daddy.” She grinned up at me, “oh and by the way I love your hair today!”
I laughed at that, “yeah okay. The only thing I did differently was put it down and use the straightener thingy you gave me for Christmas. And maybe added a little bit more makeup” I look down at the board she shoved in my face. “Great! I love that! I think we’ll get a great mark on this. And if we don’t then somebody’s messed with their minds!” I grinned down at her already beaming face. Before I could get another word in, the bell rang. Ana picked up the mess she created and said a quick goodbye and rushed off to her first period class. Turing around I started to dig through the mess at the bottom of my locker. I stood up and produced a pair of running shoes, a t-shirt and a pair of shorts. I don’t know how long they have been down there but I have half my closet in the bottom of my locker. I grabbed my deo and a pencil and rushed down to the gym.

Matt and Dean both shared the same thought of horror when they saw the note tucked into the newspaper.
“What do you-”
“I don’t know why-”
“Beats me how do you-”
“I think-”
“We’d better tell-”
“Dad.”
Matt sighed. “You know brother, I think we have more than a case on our hands here.”
“I think you’re right there Matty. I think the case we “solved” a couple of years ago has just reopened itself.” Dean shook his head.

John Hodson walked briskly down the hospital corridor. The fake ID attached to his left breast pocket identified him at the head heath administrator. He opened all the doors that he passed and checked in them. He closed them again to make sure that nothing was amiss. The 32 Glock weighed heavily in his chest holster and the 19 Glock did its share of the weight too. That one was neatly hidden under his slack pant leg.
“Mr. Bartley? Do you know where you are going?” a female voice made him jump slightly. The female doctor didn’t notice it.
“As a matter of fact I don’t think I do. I must have taken a wrong turn.” He smiled a dazzling smile. She answered with a smile of her own. John didn’t like the doctor at all. There was just something about her. Something that didn’t quit fit. John didn’t remember seeing the red headed doctor in the reception area. He looked her over. She had ample hips and full breasts. She was flat in the midsection except for one little lump at her side. He recognized the particular shape of that lump. The butt of a colt. Shit she’s good! She must have seen the realization cross his face; because she slowly pulled the colt out of is place in the shoulder holster. She pointed it at him and slowly advanced. A smile broke across her face.
“Its been a while hasn’t it John?” she asked. “I thought I wouldn’t be able to find you, but I guess that shouldn’t have been one of my worries.” She looked at him. His face was showing nothing it was just a blank mask. “Don’t you remember me?” she asked whining a little. “ I’m the one that got away. Do you remember now? My husband was Killed 2 years ago in a raid, made by the trucker team. It was said they had two spies among them. Harv didn’t believe them. I believed them though. They said that their names were Greg and John Hodson. It was also spread that the John Hodson had four kids on the team, three boys and a little girl. Are they all part of the team too Johnny?” Nothing, he stood completely still. John hated that she would drag his kids into this but he didn’t show anything. He slowly reached into his pocket. He let his fingers move a little bit and touch the little button that was mixed in with change. She was staring at his face trying to read the emotions that he purposely let play across his face to distract her. He pressed the little button and felt it start to vibrate. “Why, John why is it I seem to get the feeling that, you don’t want me to go anywhere near you children.” She laughed wickedly. “No need to worry Johnny, there in good hands. Harv’s brother and my brother should have them by now.” She looked at him, “I don’t think you’ll need to be going home tonight Johnny. The children won’t be there. They’ll be with my Harv in heaven.”

“Could Melanie Hodson come to the office please? Melanie Hodson to the office.”
I herd my name over the PA as I dodged sweaty bodies in the hall. I reached my locker and opened it up. I tossed my clothes down on the already growing pile at the bottom of my locker. I picked up the books and the binder for my next class and closed my locker. I turned around and waited for a break in the human traffic. I turned into the hallway and hurried down to the office. The VP was waiting for me out side the office door.
“Please come with me Melanie.” Mr. Barns held open the door for me. He then showed the way to his office. “Please have a seat.” He smiled. I sat down on the over stuffed black leather chair. They’re made to look comfy but really they’re like sitting on the ground.
“Um, can I ask why I’m here?” I asked casually. Suddenly the door burst open and in came all three of my brothers.
“That’s why Melanie.” He answered his eyes laughing.
“So what you guy’s love me so much you just had to see me at school and in the office?” I glared at the three of them.
Dean and Matt looked a bit sheepish and Andy looked like there was some business that was left undone.
“Mr. Barns could please give us a minute with our sister.” Andy asked in a controlled tone.
“Yeah, sure thing kids.” Mr. Barns got up out of his chair and left the room closing the door behind him. Andy moved behind the desk and sat in the VP’s chair and Matt and Dean sat on either side of me.
“Okay. So what the hells going on here? Why are you at my school and why the hell am I here?!” I barely kept my voice in control.
“Look Mel, you know that tracking device we all gave dad for Christmas last year. It had a little button on is and if he was in any kind of trouble then he was to press the button?”
“Yeah why?” Andy looked at me like I was stupid. I really had no clue as to what Andy’s point was. “Your point being?”
Andy’s voice was tightly controlled. “Look, he pressed the button not two minutes ago. Mel dads in trouble.” Andy’s statement kick started everything. Dean signed me out of school, Matt went and got the rest of my homework from the last two teachers and Andy and I went up to my locker. I undid my lock in record time and grabbed my bag and opened the hidden compartment. Cursing my pick of clothes skintight pants and a Hollister shirt. I retrieved my 19 Glock made to shape my tiny hand and shoved the shaft down the back of my pants. I pulled my shirt down over the butt to take it out of view of others. Before I zipped up my bag I notice a red flashing light. I pulled out a little device. The tiny thing was vibrating and flashing a message: I need help! I’m in trouble. Get Matt, Dean and Andy. I need help! ~Dad. I felt the blood drain from my face. I shove my lock back in place and ran down the stares with Andy in tow.
The first thing I saw was Andy’s bright yellow Camaro sitting on the side of the road. The car was electing stares from the passing students and teachers. Dean and Matt were in Matt’s Red Ferrari. It was already snarling like a tiger in a cage.
“Keys.” I eyed Andy out of the corner of my eye.
“No way! Your not driving, your underage!” Andy glared at me.
I smiled and flashed him my fake license. “Keys.” I repeated. Anger flashed in his eyes as he tossed me the keys to his baby. I got in the drivers side and marveled at how soft the leather felt. I put the key into the ignition and the engine snarled to life. I revved the engine, which earned me another glare and put it into gear. The tires squealed as I sped down the street. “Okay, so exactly where is dad?”
“Mel slow down there’s a stop sign.” Andy said sharply. Instead of slowing down I sped up and narrowly missed getting hit. I could feel his deadly glare burn the side of my head.
“Look Andy, we don’t have time to be street safe here! Dad’s in trouble and we’re going to help him.” I looked over into his face.
“Alright, sorry! He’s at Central Hospital. Turn right here Mel.”
“Why is he at Central hospital?” I frowned not understanding.
“Beats me. I think he mentioned doing some research on our next assignment today. I would’ve gone with him, except for the fact that I thought he was going to a library for that.” I looked over at him. His eyes were unfocused and staring at nothing.
Andy is exactly 7 years older than me. Despite the age difference, Andy and I are really close. He’s always been my mentor and my biggest fan. When I was 7 or so, the boys would be doing different training levels and such. I would always beg to do it with them. Dad would be all for it, but Andy would put his foot down and tell me to go do my homework. When Andy went to RMC dad started training me. And not just regular training, Matt and Dean would be in on it too. I mean intensive training! Andy would come home for holidays and my training would be all hush-hush. Eventually, dad slipped up. Andy went bizurk! I’ve never seen him so angry! For a while he wouldn’t speak to any of us. After a month or so Andy started helping with training. I don’t think he ever got over the fact that we went behind his back with my training. Anyway, Andy graduated RMC and is now on the Canadian Air Force and he’s also Master Sniper for the Special Forces team we all belong to. Dad is so proud of him! I love my brother a lot and no matter what he will do with his life or how far apart we’ll live from each other he’ll always be my Andy!
I started to drive recklessly trying to get the dead look out of Andy’s eyes. The only response I got was a phone call from Dean. I took the back entrance from the road to the hospital. The Camaro slid gracefully into a parking space. Matt pulled in to the spot beside me. I turned off the car and unlocked the console. I dug out two fake ID cards and two throat mics. Sighing I got out of the car and slammed the door shut. I hoped that would get me a glare or a string of curses for Andy. Instead I got nothing and a look from Matt. Dean got out and stood beside me. “Where’s Andy?” Dean asked turning to peer inside the tinted window.
“In the car. Dean, what the hells wrong with him?” worry laced through my acidic tone.
“Awe shucks Mel! Don’t be like that! I don’t know why he’s gone like that. Maybe he’s meditating before we go and help dad. I’ve never seen him like that though! It scares the shit out of me!” he shook his head as if to get something out. He looked own at me. He then noticed the garb in my hands. “Here lettme help you with that.” He bent down and tapped on Matt’s car window. The window slid down a crack. “Hey grab the mics and our ID cards.” Matt nodded once and the window slid back into place. Dean grabbed my mic and helped me put it into place. I opened up the car door and found my black rain jacket. Before I shut the car door glanced over at Andy, nothing, not even a blink of an eye. Anger welled in the pit of my stomach. Slamming the car door, I walked over to the passenger’s side. I opened his door and pulled him out onto his feet. Once he was balanced I looked up into his face, still nothing. Before I could think about what I was doing, I slapped Andy, hard. Matt and Dean both jumped and looked over. The dead look in Andy’s eyes was replaced be the look of shock and on his red cheek was a very distinct handprint. He looked down at me. “Thanks.” That was all he needed to say. One word was all it took. I helped him put on his mic and pinned on his ID card on his left breast pocket.
“Glock?” I eyed him a question in my eyes.
“Back of my pants.” He turned around and lifted his shirt, revealing the butt of his gun.
“ID cards?” I directed the question over to Matt and Dean. They flashed me their shirts under the Italian leather jackets. I chuckled softly to myself. Matt is now Eric Jenner, Dean is Sam McCallester, Andy is Bob Miller and I’m Shelly Cummings.
“Kay so what’s the plan here?”
“Mel you and Dean will go in the east entrance, Matt you go in the west and I’ll go in the north. Scratch that Dean you go in the south. Mel you okay by your self?” I nodded. “ Good. By what the tracking device is telling me, Dad is on the 4th floor in the east wing, although that could have changed by now. We’ve already wasted 10 minutes here. Turn on the mics and be careful!” with that said we all went on our separate ways.

“So help me God! If you touch my kids, you won’t ever see the light of day ever again! John growled. The redhead smirked.
“Did I hit a nerve Johnny?” she chuckled long and hard. He grimaced. “I thought so.”
John wondered what was taking his kids so long to get here. He hoped to hell they were okay and safe. He wished he could hold Mel once again and tell her how much he loved her. He wished he could see his boys again and tell them how proud he was to be their father.
“I’ll play nice Johnny! I promise. I’m sure my brother will make it quick for them too. It shouldn’t take that long, maybe a few minutes. I think we were going to make them suffer, but I’m not sure.” She frowned. A grin broke across her face. Something caught John’s attention; he didn’t dare look up though. He continued to look at the woman in front of him. He heard the soft click of the safety being taken off a Glock. Only then did he look up.

The walk to the east entrance only took a little over 30 seconds. In that time I made a call to the east desk to inform them that the X-Ray technician would be arriving momentarily. I’m not even out of high school yet and I’m an X-Ray technician. Ironic isn’t it? I walked brusquely into the lobby. The secretary looked up and gave a look of surprise. I wouldn’t blame her either. With some authority I asked where the elevators were.
“And may I ask who’s asking?” the nurse sitting beside the secretary asked.
“Yeah, sure. I’m Shelly Cummings the X-Ray tech that was called last week to come and look at a machine that was acting up.” The nurse nodded.
“Can I have some ID please?”
“Sure.” I placed my ID on the desk. The nurse nodded again.
“Thanks for coming! That machine has been such a bother. It hasn’t been doing anything or taking the right pictures either.” The nurse smiled. “The elevators are down the hall to your first right.” All of that just went right over my head. I don’t have a clue what she’s talking about.
“Thanks, I’ll hopefully fix what needs to be done today!” I smiled back, and headed in the direction of the elevators. I found the doors and impatiently pressed the button multiple times. The doors opened. Out came a person in a wheel chair and a couple of doctors with him. I stepped in.
“Calling, to Dodge, Chev and Ford. GMC has entered the building and is on the way up to the destination.”
“Dodge here, GMC, Toyota is still coming up as being in the place discussed before. Great work, be careful and see you in a few. Dodge over and out.”
“Copy that, 10-4.”
Okay so your probably wondering who Dodge, Chev, Ford and Toyota are. Am I right? Dodge is Andy, Chev is Dean, Ford is Matt and Toyota is Dad. We use truck names when we are doing missions like this. We also use these names when we are also doing some things for our Special Forces Team. We do this so that we don’t give away who we are and our position.
The elevator stopped at level 4 and the doors opened to reveal an empty hall and a lot of doors. I sighed, could this get anymore complicated? I stepped out and started down the hall that was labeled “east”. I pulled my Glock out from that back of my pants. I started down that hall. I stepped up to each and every door and listened. The hall that I was following split into two separate halls. I took a right sticking with the hall that was again labeled “east”. I passed a hall and something caught my eye. I doubled back and pressed my back to the cool brick. I peered around the corner. Standing in the middle of the hall was my dad with both of his glock’s on the floor and his hands raised in surrender. In front of him was a redheaded woman. There was something about her back that I recognized. The red hair was a definite trigger to something that I needed to remember. Who did dad know that had red hair? Nobody that’s who. Who did dad know that worked at a hospital? A few people, do any of those people have red hair or have something against dad? Nope. Did any of our cases deal with a woman that had red hair? Yes. What was it? That shipment of Cocaine, the one worth billions. Why was the red head involved? Umm, she was the dealer’s partner? No that’s not right! She was the dealer’s wife. That’s it! Why is she here threatening my dad? Why is she even here? What would she want with us? Think, think, think Mel! The dealer, what was his name? Harv. What happened to him? I killed him.
““I’ll play nice Johnny! I promise. I’m sure my brother will make it quick for them too. It shouldn’t take that long, maybe a few minutes. I think we were going to make them suffer, but I’m not sure.” The red head said. I killed her husband and now she’s out for revenge. Shit! I quietly crept out into the hall. I kept my eyes on the red head. I tried to quietly slip the safety off my Glock. I heard the soft click. Dad looked up, and the red head tensed.
***
A stout looking woman walked into the lobby of the east entrance. The nurse looked up. “Hi, I’m here about the X-Ray machine that was giving you guys a little bit of trouble.” The nurse caulked an eyebrow.
“But I just sent one of you other techs up there not 5 minutes ago.” The nurse replied.
“There shouldn’t have been another tech come in. I was just told about it today that I had to fix the same one that gave you guys problems last year too.” The tech replied.
The nurse and secretary looked at each other.
***
I slowly pointed my glock at the redheads back. “I’ll kill you just like I killed your husband bitch.” My voice sounded mean and threatening. “Put down the gun and maybe I’ll be the one playing nice.” Dad’s eyebrows shot up and the red head slowly turned. “I said, drop the gun or so help me Jesus!” fear was plain on her face and she bent down slowly and placed the gun on the floor. I looked her over. “The knife and the tazer too. Look lady, I’m not one to play games here. Either you do as I say and drop everything or I pave the way to hell for ya.”
“I think you can pave the way to hell for me. That way I won’t burn my feet on the way down.” She replied sarcastically. She grinned, but she didn’t remove anything else. The gun still lay alone on the floor.
“Fine.” I growled. I pulled the trigger; the bullet hit her shoulder making a sickening thud. I stared at her face. Pain screwed up her face making it look distorted and her mouth was pressed into a hard line, to hold back a scream. “Now I’m going to tell you again to put down the tazer and the knife.” This time she complied. Blood was dripping on to the floor and her white lab coat was stained a dark red. Her left hand slipped into her jacket and stayed there. I assumed she was pressing her hand to the bleeding to try and make it stop. I still had her under the point of my gun. Never taking my eyes off of her face and my point never wavering I reached in to my pants pocket and grabbed my cell.
“ Calling Dodge, Ford and Chev. GMC has Toyota and the problem. Situation under control for the moment, but might need some help.” I spoke into the mic.
“Chev here, got your back GMC, be there in 2.”
“Copy that-” before I could finish what I was saying the red head spun around and faced dad. While she was spinning she pulled out a little 15 and pointed it at dad. I dropped my cell and put my other hand up to the glock. She pulled the trigger and so did I. The bullet hit home, right in the middle of her back killing her instantly. Dad crumpled to the floor with a groan. “Dad!” I shrieked.
“GMC, what going on?” I heard my brothers in union over the ear bud stuck in my ear. “GMC do you copy? GMC!!” I pulled the bud out of my ear. I dropped my gun and raced over to my dad.
“Dad, dad are you okay? Dad answer me!” I shook him. He was on his chest, so I rolled him over. Blood was gushing from his chest. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I pressed down on the wound to make it stop bleeding. “Dad, look at me. Dad it’s me, Mel. Wake up dad, please!”
“Melanie!!” Dean’s voice was filled with alarm. I could hear him calling emergency over the mic. “Melanie are you okay? Mel, god damn it, answer me.” Dean shook me. I nodded.
“Dad, he’s been shot. Daddy please say something! Anything, please.” I begged. Dad jerked and his eyes cracked open. “Daddy, its me Mel, say something do something.” I begged again.
Dads voice was raspy, “Mel, Dean. Mel are you okay?” I nodded. “Thank god! You did great honey! I’m really proud of you!” he coughed into his hand. He curled it into a fist so I couldn’t see the blood. “I love you Mel! Always remember that!” his eyes slowly closed.
“Dad!” both Dean and I yelled. I shook him again. We both heard footsteps coming our way. Dean started to yell.
“Over here, in here!” Dean yelled again and again. Andy came around the corner first, and then Matt and right behind him was 5 paramedics, 3 doctors and the rest of the trucker team. Dean got up and attempted to pull me up with him. He gave up as soon as he realized that I wasn’t going to budge.
“Dad’s been shot, I don’t know if Mel is okay or not. I can’t tell she has blood all over her.” Dean said to Andy. A paramedic gently lifted me up and started to take me away from my dad. I started to kick and shriek and scratch at his face. The doctors and the other four paramedics crowded around my dad. Dean and Matt both looked over at me. Matt came over and told the paramedic to give me to him. I was gently placed into my brother’s arms.
“He’s going to be okay Mel. You wait and see. You did a great job, I’m proud of you!” Matt whispered into my ear. I turned my face into his shoulder and started to cry. His hand rubbed my back. Dad was picked up and placed onto a gurney and wheeled out into the hall.
“Melanie.” I heard a deep voice say my name. I looked up from Matt’s shoulder. An older man was standing behind Matt.
“Granddad,” Matt put me down and I raced over to give him a hug. His big powerful arms wrapped protectively around me. “ I did the best that I could! I should have been more thorough! I-”
“Shh, Melanie. You did your best that’s all that any of us can ask for. Your dad’s going to be alright, I promise!” He hugged me tighter and wiped the tears from my eyes.
“Mr. Hodson, could you please go down to the private waiting area while we get your son looked after?” The last doctor asked.
“We can all do that. Thanks Tom. I greatly appreciate it!” Granddad replied. “Alright, the Hodson brood come with me and the rest of the team your coming too! Down to level three in the private waiting area please.” Granddad’s voice boomed.
