Mirrors and Smoke

PreviousNext

You never take me seriously.

You think I’m just a joke.

You always talk imperiously,

Tryin’ to be like them gangsta’ folk.

I’ve tried so hard to be your friend,

But you’re always talkin’ trash.

Even for you, my standards won’t bend.

The disrespect, like whiplash.

You think you’re cooler than your peers.

You think that you’re top dog.

But look away, or cover your ears,

While I clear away some fog.

Your respect is lacking,

Your kindness is a joke,

You manipulate our sight

With mirrors and smoke.

But no one can see it,

The truth behind that face.

The rude words, you sugar-coat it

And make pretty with some lace.

Me, I’ve been there,

Hurt and embarrassed

By your words and your glare

That you pretended were in jest.

I’ve seen past the smoke and mirrors,

I’ve seen who you really are.

I’ve seen you plant fears

And leave more than one scar.

But this is where I draw the line.

This is where I stand my ground.

I will always protect what is mine,

To my family first I am bound.

So here is where I leave you,

I promise to hold no grudge,

But between my family and you,

Never will I budge.

As for me, I have no fears.

I know you’re just a joke,

Because I’ve seen past the mirrors

And I’ve seen past the smoke.

WOW! This Is stunning. I related to it almost immedently. I had a friend who would try to be above everyone else. If she was not her idea then it was never gonna happen. If you have something better then her she would automatically put her nose up to it. She would befriend everyone but no one was aloud to have friends beside her. you were only aloud to hang out with her. She was rude and put everyone down. So i understand from similar experiences. Yet no one else could see her for who see really was until She tore them down and made them miserable. Then they believed me about her. It is sad that some people are like that and take advantage of others kindness.

Don't let the foulness of this person get you down. You have an amazing talent and you can get so far in life with it. Just stick to it. Dispite what others say there is always a light at the end of every tunnel, you just have to be near it to see it.

I was definitely drawn in to reading your poem by your title. Smoke and Mirrors. It made me think of a magician! An illusionist! And the person your poem speaks of is definitely an illusionist, a highly skilled one at that, and congratulations for being able to see through their tricks.

My favorite part of your poem is the lines that say, "But no one can see it, the truth behind that face. The rude words, you sugar-coat it, and make pretty with some lace." It flows nicely, and has a lot of truth. Many people think they can get away with rude comments as long as it can be seen as a joke or they can dress it up. Most of the time people do let them get away with it, as long as they can get a good laugh. Hardly ever do people see through the smoke and mirrors, that the people speaking are the actual jokes.

I didn't quite understand the part that says, "To my family first I am bound. So here is where I leave you, I promise to hold no grudge, but between my family and you, never will I budge." To me these lines were a bit confusing, because you went from talking about the person with the hateful words to your family.

Other than that one little part that's probably my own fault that I found confusing, your poem was awesome and had a lot of truth behind it. Good job! :)

That one part was personal, so it makes sense to me and some of my friends. Basically, my "friend" talked some smack about, and was rude to my family. That's the reason behind that line. Thanks for the review! :)
