The cold cobblestone streets were caked with newly-fresh mud from the rain that stuck to Dawn's flip-flops. Now ever step she felt as if she had to pull her feet out of quicksand. She sloshed and splashed through the drizzle which was getting heavier and heavier with every minute. Getting wet was the least of Dawn's fears at the moment however so she pulled herself together and treaded on as New York City traffic rushed by her, horns honking wildly with the anger and frustration of impatient drivers who spat curses into the streets and rain. The sound of Dawn's jingling keys was now drowned in the noise and was now merely a faint clicking sound.
The park's gates opened up with welcomed arms, adorned with flowers which petals had rain droplets clinging on to them, and the cut grass, the smell of summer's end. Birds nested in the trees, head buried under their wings, shielding them from the nasty weather. Dawn dragged her feet and walked tiredly down the marked path. Maybe, she could go into the woods. Cutting through the city and past the park and it's jolly visitors who were pulled by leashed drooling puppies that were still unsteady on their small stumpy legs. The sky was still gloomy, still had a little light that settled over the city like a thin blanket.
Dawn followed the path until it forked out in 3 directions. She cut through the new grass, leaving prints of dry mud that cracked and came off of her shoes in dried pieces. She ran and ran, her veins full of excitement. The rain cooled her angry nerves and sweat, and her breath that almost came in small choked gasps. Her lungs were painfully dry, feet plastered with blisters all over her pinched toes, and face pelted with large drops of mist, fog, and rain that slid down her face steadily and left pools over the neckline of her shirt. Stomach cramps stabbed at her with pain that stretched from head to toe and urged her to stop. Dawn slowed down. The tall trees loomed above her. Darkness filling through the gaps in the woods. Like the New York skyline that stood in the clouds, the trees were like people in an angry mob and towered over Dawn who craned her neck to see the wet leaves and branches. So this was the Gypsy Woods...
