My Biggest Fear
“Do you remember when I was interviewing you that one time?” I asked. This was going to be hard, I’ve never done this before. And it didn’t help that he hated my guts. He ignored me, looking up at the white ceiling, which seemed to be closing in on me even though I’m not claustrophobic. I gulped before continuing. “You asked what my biggest fear was and I told you I wasn’t scared of anything, I lied.”
“Obviously,” he said, not looking down at me, but turning his attention out of the cramped hallway, to the gym right outside of it. “You always lie.”
I held back tears and bit my lip to keep it from quivering. Yeah, he was right, but that just made it sting even more.
“Do you want to know the answer?” I smiled slightly at the truth I would soon reveal.
“All truth?”
“All truth.” I said, putting my pinkie up to pinkie swear, but he didn’t meet my hand halfway. I set it back beside me, resting it on the cool cement wall as his eyes set on the locker room door next to my head. His friends would be out soon and I didn’t want to embarrass him again, I’d have to speed this up.
“Well, Andrea Limber, what is your biggest fear?”
I breathed in the smell of sweaty feet, breathed out the warm stuffy air, and closed my eyes, red from staying up all night thinking about him.
“Ever since that stupid game of spin-the-bottle in sixth grade, my biggest fear has been falling for you.” I replied quickly. It felt good to get it off of my chest, but my pleasure was short lived.
"And?" he replied, uniterested and rolling his eyes.
“And I’m pretty much scared out of my wits.” I added, silently. He looked down at me very quickly. I couldn’t exactly place his expression, and I’m not sure I wanted to. All at once the whole basketball team came rushing out of the locker room, dressed in their weekend clothes, ready to go to Melanie’s party later. Zach was strong and held his ground, but I was swept up in the crowd and could do nothing but walk along with them. As I was being pushed away, I looked back and our eyes met.
Everything came back so quickly and clearly at that minute, I knew I would have a major headache later. It was like it all happened yesterday, the spin-the-bottle, the interview, the dance, the kiss, and the paper. The paper that ruined my life and almost ruined his basketball career, the paper I wrote. After it came out and I quit the newspaper committee, I swore never to write again. But it was too late, the damage was done. Everyone knew the real Zach Baker and it was all my fault.
So when our eyes met and I remembered everything, I felt completely and utterly hopeless. I knew it was over between us, and there was nothing I could do about it.
“I’m sorry.” I whispered as I went out the door.
Funny how everything is way longer when you write it on paper =] Please review, this was done while I was kind of distracted, so I may not be getting to points in places, so please help me out. Even a simple cute or hate it will suffice if you don't have much time at the moment. And if you like it, by all means, like it! Thank you everyone.
