Chapter 2

By the time my client arrived at Starbucks, I was thoroughly

shocked and confused. It was just so odd to suddenly hear from the past I

used to run away from.

“Lacey, are you alright, you don’t seem like yourself today.”

Lindsey, the newest addition to my talent agency was looking concerned.

“Oh, yeah Lindsey, I’m fine. I just received a weird phone call,

that’s all.” She shrugged and began to tell me the latest gossip about

celebrities. That was just the trigger I needed to get back to work.

For the next hour I talked Lindsey out of a photo shoot that would end her

career and into a small role for a film. I rushed through the day, focusing on

my work instead of the phone call I had received earlier. When my day was

finally over I was ready for sleep to engulf me, but as soon as I stepped

inside my chic loft apartment I could see that was not a possibility.

“Jayke! What are you doing here?” In that moment, and many

others like it, I regretted giving my best friend the key to my apartment. He

gave me one of his charming smiles and handed me a cup of hot tea. I had

to admit, there were good reasons why I kept him around.

“Lacey, dear. My coffee maker broke, and I was absolutely dying

with out it. I didn’t think you’d mind. I also brewed your favorite tea, just in

case you did mind.”

I’m sure he wouldn’t have died with out his coffee maker, but I didn’t say as

much. That was the thing about Jayke, being dramatic was not only a way of

life, but the only reason to live he believed. I took the mug out of his hand

grudgingly and flopped on the couch. I let out a long exasperated sigh

hoping he would get the hint and pester me with questions. He was the only

one I ever accepted personal questions from. I looked at him with pleading

eyes.

“Okay, spill it. I have a date in an hour.” His eyes were a

mixture of humor and concern.

“Well… you remember I told you about my family in Mississippi? I got a

phone call today from my grandmother’s butler saying I was to inherit

everything of hers, the only exception being I had to return to Wade and

stay with her until she passes. I haven’t been able to think straight since I

got the call.”

“So what are you going to do?”

“Argh. I don’t know! I am a very successful business woman. It’s not like I

can up and leave my job, clients and responsibilities.” I was using Jayke’s

impeccable confident boosting reasons to try and get me out of this

dilemma.

“Lacey, you own your business. You are the big wig, the boss. You can do

what ever the hell pleases you. Nice try though, I wonder who taught you

that excuse!” Dammit. I knew he was going to say that. I didn’t know what I

was going to do. I had been thinking about taking a vacation, however I

didn’t think Wade, Mississippi fit into my description of a vacation. I was day-

dreaming of sandy beaches and deep blue ocean side resorts when I heard

Jayke clear his throat.

“So, what shall we pick out for you to wear in good old Wade?” He drawled

the words out like he was a retarded cowboy. Typical Jayke.

game-

I totally know what you mean. I went back and reread it and it sounded horrible. I am used to personal essays where i bounce back in time. I really do like the part about how they became friends..but it didn't make sense in that context.

I edited it.. so the new one is up now.

well, this story or part of a story or--whatever--branched off from what i thought was the main topic...
i'm not sure what you were trying to do with this...
you started off with someone working hard and then going home to find their friend in their apartment and suddenly branching off in an explanation of how they became friends...
and whatever happened to the phone call? what was that about?

the writing itself was good--very good, actually--, but i cannot understand what you were doing with the story...

that probably didn't help much.
sorry.

nice try.
