The Snow

PreviousNext
This is a poem I wrote a few years ago and I just wondered what people thought of it...

And nobody thinks of those out on the street,
With nothing to eat and the cold in their feet,
Or why it is snowing; climate change they say.
In a few days we'll all wish it away.
It'll be sloshy and cold,
Back to normal routine,
For the young and the old,
But then a glimpse will be seen...
And over to the patch where white still shines the snow,
And into it you'll plant that print that you know,
For there's a spark of excitement,
'Comes with the crunch under foot,
With the feel of the softness that you just took.
And you'll scoop up a handful,
And at your friend you'll throw.
They'll laugh and chase you back
And you and they will know,
That the magic of Winter will never go.

Hi, this was looking lonely so I decided I'd write you a review :)

You're off in a couple of places with the rhythm or you have strange phrasing that makes it feel off and I just thought I'd point those parts out and try to help you fix them. I'll also throw in a few other tips along the way ^^

Or why it is snowing; climate change they say.
This line is awkward and difficult to say. What I'd suggest is splitting it up and putting another in there, like:

Or why it is snowing out in the lane,
the white on the ground and ice on the pane
Climate change. Ice caps; what everyone says
and in a few days we'll all wish it away

Okay so that's just a really quick idea but try to think outside the box as well because a few of these lines feel forced and I'm not sure you really spend long enough on each issue before rushing ahead. There doesn't seem to be much of a logical structure outside of the rhythm scheme so it all feels a little forced!

And over to the patch where white still shines the snow,
And into it you'll plant that print that you know,
This is very awkward! Especially that first line, none of it sounds natural. Don't go with the first words you have in your head, play with them and push them until they feel as though they fit. Maybe try something like:

And over there, that patch! The snow is white and fresh
and you'll plant in it the booted print tied close against your flesh

But remember I am going with the first few things I think of. You have more time and effort to put into this poem so think it through!

Overall

I think I'll leave this here for the moment. You've got a few good lines but it needs some work in the structure department and I don't think it says very much that's new. The message of the poem is that there's always going to be winter and it's always going to be 'magic', yet you pointed out yourself that there are people cold on the streets and didn't conclude that. I felt you didn't do enough to address the bad side of winter so maybe think this through some more!

I have one thing to say.
Don't say "Gonna". Say, going to go.

Thanks- I think I might make it 'will never go'!
