A Single Rose

PreviousNext

I saw you on Valentine’s

A childish grin on your face

You began to walk to me

Striding with a hurried pace

Your fingers curled at your side

A single rose in your hand

My heart beat out of control

Like an airplane left unmanned

I focused on the flower

A sign of eternal love

Holding meaning more than words

Like peace with a pure white dove

Its crimson petals blossomed

Twirling in the winter air

I longed for you in my arms

And the flower in my hair

Instead you walked right past me

Not attempting clandestine

Instead you gave it to her

For she was your Valentine

Inked here!
I get it, it spoke to me. I do agree that it was a bit cliche, but that isn't a bad thing. Cliches are cliche because they work. I like how you described the rose. How you described how you really thought it was for you.
I would love to see more detail about the sadness expressed for not getting it. It is unneeded, but it would be nice.
you have real talent, this was really good, I hope you succeed in whatever you wish to do.

So, I'm going to disagree with one of the other posters about the capitalizing every line. It's up to you if that's the style you want to go for. Thousands and thousands of incredible poets did that, and though there's a constant conversation about it, I don't think you should change it because you think it's "wrong". It's a super valid poetry writing convention.

Anyway, with that little rant over, I thought that poems was good. This might me being nitpick-y, because I generally thought it was a solid undertaking, but I automatically roll my eyes whenever I see the word "love" rhymed with "dove" This could be, again, just me being really annoying, but I think its an easy way to sound cliche right off the bat.

also with the line

"Not attempting clandestine

Instead you gave it to her"

Clandestine is an adjective so you have to pair it with something or it does't make sense grammatically. Like "clandestine" actions or "being clandestine" Something like that. Other than that, good effort!

Thank you, your review was wonderful to receive. I totally get the clandestine bit, I just couldn't think of anything else because I really wanted it to end with Valentine. Thanks :)

You successfully made a very cliche topic entertaining and heartfelt in a poem. Congratulations!

I don't have anything to say about rhythm, rhyme, or conventions. It was all great.
Just ONE thing:
Add some sort of punctuation or stanzas. The rhythm flows very easily anyway, but a symbol of that break should still be there so it's obvious.

i.e.:

I saw you on Valentine’s,

A childish grin on your face.

You began to walk to me,

Striding with a hurried pace.

Commas, semi-colons, whatever. Just make the correct breaks obvious and where they need to be.

Thanks for sharing and hope I helped. Great job

Thank you so much. Your review is fantastic and thanks for the feedback. About the punctuation you are totally correct. I always use appropriate punctuation, it just flew my mind this time. Oops :p

I did not expect the ending. My heart skipped a beat. Seriously. Very good. You did a good job on that. I was so much in the romance that I didn't expect that part. It is sad. I hate it when things like that happen. Reading it is almost like seeing it. You can picture in your mind. I pictured a beautiful girl who looked dreamy at her crush, but her heart got smashed by that guy. I pictured him as this good looking guy who later wasn't so good looking. His heart was for another girl. He was so much into this girl, he didn't see the other girl's face. I can seriously feel her pain. It's so sad. :(.

You do need to fix some things. On your thirteenth line, you need to put an apostrophe on its. Also you can't put ' And' on your first word of your sentence. It's okay, I had to learn, too. Other than that, you did awesome. Keep writing as best as you can! :)

-Hope :)

Thank you for your review, but I would just like to point out that there is no reason for an apostrophe on the thirteenth line. With 'it' an apostrophe is only required if it's an abbreviation for 'it is'. There is no possessive for 'it'. Just saying

This is a sad piece of poetry, but it's very well written. I love how you build up after the speaker has seen the rose and just end it saying, "For she was your Valentine." I think lots of people how have crushes can relate to this. It's not easy when the one you love is in love with someone else, and this poem displays that perfectly. I can't find any errors, so congratulations. Though, "Not attempting clandestine" was a bit of a stretch, it was needed for the rhyme scheme and I understand that. Once again, beautiful piece. Just lovely. Keep writing.

Very very nice. Extremely well done. I like romance a lot. Great job. Just a tip : remember if you want you can write an ending to it. Say how you felt after he passed you and handed the rose to his ACTUAL valentine. Use some long describing . For instance I fell sobbing to the ground my heart was broken. My one chance at real love vanishing in an instant before my eyes . Show your true feelings put your heart into it. Otherwise if there is no conclusion then the readers are left wanting to know what happens next. If they want it give it to them. Ok?

Thank you, that's a great point. I understand how that might be good for a lot of poems, but I wanted mine to be more open ended. In this way, it is left to the reader's imagination to create an ending to the plot. Does that make sense?

An awesome poem! Just two things-do not capitalise the start of every line and include more punctuation :p
