Fort Wagner Charge

We will always think of them
When we look back at that war.
They whose rights were all but none
Still their burdens they bore.
 
What a Picturesque noon it was
With all the soldiers in blue.
How can it be the artillery
Soon their bodies will hew?
 
Down the beach towards Fort Wagner they marched,
Not stopping for all to see
That they would be leading the charge on that hill,
Against the battery.
 
They fought like demons, charged, unstoppable
Into the bloody fray.
They did not think of themselves, not once
Not on that bloody day.
 
Those brave souls fought long and hard,
Fought for all their kindred.
Though they died they will be remembered,
Those courageous three hundred.

I'd just like to say it's nice to see that someone else out there knows about the 54th Massachusetts. My favorite piece of Civil War history. :)
