The Cursed, Pt. 4.1

The Cursed

Part 4.1

~x~

A plate fell to the floor, splintering into several glittering pieces.

Irma Pembroke's eyes narrowed in annoyance, snapping her out of her thoughts. Her stupid thoughts. They were taking over her mind, and they were doing her no good, turning her into this woman who dropped four dishes in one hour.

Her mind was elsewhere, and she didn't like it. She wasn't used to feeling this way: unsure of herself, unsure of others. She was used to being confident and aware; to having command and order.

She would not deny that Lady Magdalene's show earlier did nothing but make her feel out of control. Sure, Irma had put enough of a good show to show indifference, but it was just that: a show. To ease herself or knock the triumphant look off of Lady Magdalene's face, she wasn't sure. She aimed for both, but she felt like she failed at both. And while Irma was bitter about it, she would not lie to herself about it.

A laugh broke out somewhere in the house, and Irma looked toward the stairs. She briefly wondered if her daughter would appear at hearing the crashes, but then she remembered the dressmaker's girl bustling in there earlier with bags upon bags. Yes, Celia would be in her room for some time.

Or it could be because she was simply avoiding Irma. The thought stung but Irma had to consider it. Perhaps Celia's seeming compliance earlier was a show of her own, learning from the best show runner around: her mother.

Celia's "Am I in danger?" taunted her now, louder and louder in her mind. She had every right to ask it, but still it did nothing but unnerve Irma — when Celia first asked it, and even hours later, when she was well in her room. The questions, the hints of doubt, the worrisome edge in Celia's voice — they all tore at Irma piece by piece until she became what she was now: a scatter-brained woman with slippery hands.

But while she was this unfortunate version of herself, she was no liar. Irma really had meant what she said to Celia. That she wasn't in danger of the witches. At least, not any time soon. Irma knew her threat of reporting Lady Magdalene to the Chancellor had she went through with her plans was enough to simmer down any immediate doings.

Still, Lady Magdalene's words rang high in her head. We want your girl. Irma could not say she didn't expect something like this. She could not say she didn't expect someone looking for Celia. Her naive Celia. She thought she would have more time. More to time to gust up the courage to contact him.

Irma reached behind her for the counter, gripping its edge tightly. She was trying to be normal with her thoughts, with herself. Stay steady, stay Irma, she chanted internally. She repeated this multiple times until she drew in a deep breath, focusing on the moment. On the now.

Right now, Celia was safe. Right now, Irma had time.

With her bare hands, Irma reached down to pick the pieces up, uncaring of whether or not she would get a cut or two.

We want your girl.

A sharp feeling met her finger, but Irma ignored it — just as she ignored the small trickle of blood — and continued to collect the sharp pieces.

We want your girl.

Irma gritted her teeth as she collected. That Lady Magdalene was toying with the wrong woman. It was true that, while Irma was without a single trace of magic and Lady Magdalene was magic in her every being, a match between the two would not end in Irma's favor.

But in Terran, Irma had something the oh-so magical Lady Magdalene did not have: high status. And while high status often would do no good in a physical match, it was the obvious win in a match of wits, of true power. Irma's connections with the higher officials of the settlement, and even beyond, would no doubt be enough to rouse those witches out of Terran and onto settlements that actually were in favor of their kind. That was only if they proved themselves to be a threat — and in the beginning, they even fooled her into believing their business here involved no hidden agenda.

We want your girl.

Until today.

In a sudden motion, Irma stood, her hands cradling the glass pieces. Her whole body felt rigid with anger. Those witches definitely had an agenda, an agenda that concerned Celia. Dead or alive —

Her chest began to feel tight, and Irma resisted the urge to crush her fists, which would send them into a bloody mess.

How dare they. How dare they come here and demand things — people  handed to them. "Damned witches," she hissed, and then hissed it again, this time louder, before flinging the sharp pieces back onto the ground. She watched as they skirted across the ground, arranging themselves into a random array of pieces: some tinged with blood, others with sharp points, few without jagged edges.

To her, it just looked like a mess. A mess that needed cleaning, a mess that needed to be undone.

But to him, Irma knew, mildly confused over the sudden thought of him, it would look like art.

AN: So it's been a long time since... yeah. I've been swamped with a lot going in my life, but things have calmed. Also, writing this part was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I won't go into the exact specifics of why here, but... man. I don't know what to think of it yet. My brain is fried. I promise the next part will not take as long as this one did. It's already finished; just some quick tweaking. Feel free to leave criticism -- good or bad, I appreciate it. I know there's lots of errors that I didn't catch. Thank you to anyone who reads/reviews! -comrie EDIT: I removed half of the original post because I felt like things were moving too fast. I'm going to post the other half in another separate post sometime soon.

Okay! My review here will touch upon the plot and, well, the Irma picking up shards of the plate.

You're developing Irma's character which is good because we want to understand her, all these things she has bewn doing. She is a good actress. This is totally relatable. Sometimes you want to assume a certain position to assert your authority. Against a powerful, well-known witch such as Lady Magdalene, this seems like a good way to show you and her are in even ground.

Is that a review? It seems like I'm analyzing Irma's action too much.

I can see she really loves her daughter, Celia, and being protective is just a way for her to show that. Perhaps there will be a good reason for her to be so since Celia definitely has something you haven't told us yet (or else why would the witch ask for her, right?). And to involve another person, a completely new character that has yet to be introduced just shows how this thing can't be handled by Irma alone. That lift up the stakes, in my opinion.

I do feel releasing the glass shards she have gathered to be a bit ridiculous. I mean, why? Can't shw just throw them with fury into the dustbin? I dunno, it just feels lile she has to repeat what she's done again, and that would take time.

The last paragraph is the one that grabs my attention the most. I would like to meet this mysterious guy who is likely to think a mess of bloodied glass pieces as an art.

Also, the ":". You used it a lot at places where I think hyphens should be more fitted. I concede on explaining further though since I'm no expert in grammatical issues.

And that is all! Bye! :)

Hey~

And yeah, I never had any intentions of developing Irma (just because I didn't realize how much I needed to), but I'm glad I did. I'm also glad you can see she loves Celia. She doesn't know how to show it so that Celia herself would understand, but it's there. That love. And I don't mind the analyzing; it's helping me learn about her character too, which I feel like I do every time I sit down to write. So feel free to analyze away!

The releasing the glass shards was meant to show just how volatile she was, emotionally. How impulsive she felt, and how consumed she was by her thoughts to not think things through. Although now I'm not sure how "impulsive" throwing glass on the ground is. Hm, I don't think I went by it the right way. I didn't even consider the dustbin thing. That is more logical and it would save her the time of having to pick it all up again. I'll look that over.

Yes, I abuse colons to no end but I know I should stop. It's not good for my writing, especially since I throw it all over the place, anywhere that I think would be a good fit. And I don't consider other options, like the hyphen you suggested, which I'm considering because I see how much of a better fit it is. And that's okay. I'm no grammar expect (clearly haha) but I appreciate any feedback you think would be helpful. I'll rework that.

Yay for grabbing your attention. I tried to refer to the mystery guy here but not overly so. I'd love for you to meet him soon too! At this point I'm not sure when he'll come in (just because I have not written that far ahead, oopsie), but he's set to. I promise.

Thank you for reading/reviewing <3 I'm super grateful for the help and your thoughts -comrie

You're welcome. Thanks for making a pleasant chapter. :)

God, I read this at the time I can't review it. I just want to say I like how things are going right now, how I'm liking Irma. Now, off to reading the second part... ;)

Hey, I'm finally here for your review! Sorry for taking so long.

Hey, you chopped a bunch of it off! Oh, well. Post that bit soon, I liked it. Okay, I'm starting, I'm starting.

A plate fell to the floor, splintering into several glittering pieces.

You say several here, but farther down you say many. Several makes me think of just a couple pieces, but later on I get the picture of the plate scattered across the room in multiple shards of glass. Which is it?

to contact him.

Hmmm... Who is "him"? Suspense! :D

Stay steady, stay Irma, she chanted internally.

This doesn't seem like a chant. Try ordered instead. It fits the scene more. Chant really threw me. Or put a second steady. Also, Comma between stay and Irma.

A sharp feeling met her finger,

The sharp feeling wouldn't meet her finger, it would be in her finger. I know what you mean though. Maybe stung?

We want your girl.

Until today.

I think you need to switch this around. "Until today" on top and "We want your girl" on bottom.

Irma came across good in this part, not as stiff as she was in the last few. Very worried, not as sure of herself. In the first ones she seemed almost ridiculous with her worry over the little tiny details. Now we see that she might actually have a reason for being protective and demanding that Celia follows certain rules. Though I still don't envy Celia for her Mother! She seems more human in this one. We see that she can make mistakes.

I love how you ended this, it was perfect. The constant hinting to him, pulling everyone's attentions back to her need to talk to him. It's awesome. One question I really want to have answered soon. Who is him? I hope we find out soon! :D You are building it up extremely well.

Keep writing! :D

Heya and that's okay! I didn't mind.

And yeah I did take some off... but that's because I needed some time to think about where I'm going with this story. Plus, I felt like this story was going too fast -- between writing and thinking about writing. But I planned to post the other half tomorrow or so.

I didn't pay attention to that. Yeah, that makes total sense. Thinking about it now, I'd say "many" and stick with that.

"Him" is our mystery dude for this story:) That's about all I can say about that haha

"Ordered" does fit it a lot better than "chanted." I think it was just the first word that came to mind and I just stuck with it. But I will change it to "ordered" because I like that a lot more.

And I see why you'd put the comma, but I wrote "Stay steady, stay Irma," and not your suggestion because to Irma, being steady was who she was. It was her way of saying, "Be normal again! Be Irma again!" (and normal for her is steady and calm and collected). Does that make sense? Let me know, because if it doesn't, I'll go ahead and add the comma because it's appropriate and stuff!

Yeah, I think I was going for, the piece like digging into her finger (hence, the blood), but I threw met in instead and forgot about it actually going in after. But I will rework that.

I like your idea of switching it around! I think it flows better that way.

Yay, she came across less stiff. I didn't plan to write this piece for Irma (actually, I didn't plan to write any piece for Irma), but I started to realize it was necessary especially when, like you said, her worry didn't seem to have no explanation. And I know there's no detailed explanation even here, but I tried to leave hints (even just a little bit) about it, and what Irma is dealing with. Again, I know there's no detailed stuff, but I plan to give explanations soon. But I'm happy to see that she seems more human and not a robot (which I think I've portrayed her as in the previous parts... at least in my head). There's definitely a reason behind her stern face and hard eyes.

"Him" is someone that will be unmasked, I promise that. As for soon? Right now I'm not sure, but I want to make it soon.

Thank you for reading/reviewing! I really appreciate it <3 -comrie

You definitely need a mystery dude in every story. ;)

Okay, that makes sense. It does fit her personality. Sure, just leave that part the way it is.

Yeah, do rework that part. Just a bit rough. Not terrible though, not any worse than mine. :P

Hurry up and get the next part posted! I'm ready to review! Better hurry while this mood last :D

It's funny you say that, I'm actually in the middle of getting it ready to post haha
