The Wrong Witch.
*Chapter 1*
“What the hell is this?! Why am I bleeding?!”
“Be silent! I can’t think!”
“Well Kirstein, why the hell am I bleeding?!”
“It’s a human thing, all girls do it.”
“What the! Who the! Why the! Ugh!! I hate being a human!”
“You and me both Lacey.”
There is nothing better than a 7000 year old vampire, who crossed the wrong witch and is now a human.
“So wait, how do I fix this?!” Lacey yelled.
“Under the sink. Open it and stick that on your underwear.”
“What the hell! Humans bleed from there!”
“Wait, where are you bleeding from?”
“My nose!”
“How the hell did you do that?” I asked.
“I don’t even know!”
“Stick toilet paper up your nose.”
“Gross!”
I walked back to my computer and began looking for our mysterious witch.
“What did she say her name was?”
“Like I remember.”
“You’re so helpful.”
“I don’t understand Kirstein, why can’t you reverse the witches spell?”
“Because, like I have said before, I am only half a witch. I may have been born from the second strongest witch in all the covens BUT I don’t get my full witch powers until I am 6018.”
“So I have a useless witch and vampire, and I am stuck like a human until we can figure out why this witch did this to me!”
“Sorry that biting you with the half vampire part of me didn’t work… I get that at full strength when I turn 6018 also… would you like to keep trying my patience?”
“No, I'm sorry.”
I grabbed a list and a crystal, “follow me.”
We walked downstairs and into my basement. I flipped the light switch and continued down the stair case, with Lacey right on my heels.
My name is Kirstein Knightley; I am 5’5 with short, styled dirty blonde hair. When I am pretending to be human, my eyes are a bright shade of green, with a piercing black ring around them, but when I am a vampire, or at home my eyes turn as black as the night sky. Never can I mask them from others of my kind. That is disrespect and a slap in the face, higher ranks do it to show they have no need to be challenged, that they are the strongest. I on the other hand can fight about as well as a thousand year old vampire can, except I am 6017 years old. Being a half vampire and half witch does that to a person. At 6018 the two bloods stop fighting for who wants control and finally merge as one.
I walked than turned to my left without a second thought, I knew where I was going, I could walk here blindfolded and still have perfect precision. Lacey was still behind me, trying hard not to grab onto my arm.
I am fairly built, not too boyish looking and very attractive. Well all vampires have flawless skin and pearly white teeth. My fangs retract when I have no use for them, but are my ultimate weapon, besides magic. I may be only half for now but everyone in the night world knows that those born of two creatures are the most powerful. I will over take my coven from Scalene one day. It is destined, and I cannot wait. I hate her and to kill her with my own two hands… its heaven on earth.
I cracked my knuckle and Lacey jumped, “what was that?”
“My knuckle.”
“Oh.”
“How will you ever survive?”
“By getting my vampirism back!”
“Hush.”
I walked to a wall and turned around, “ready?”
“Why can’t we ever just vanish from your room?”
“Because, I’m not allowed to use magic where others can see, and we have some very nosey neighbors.”
“Turn them into toads.”
“I tried and got in trouble for it.”
“Lovely, well let’s go.”
I grabbed Lacey’s arm and did my magic.
No there are no words or chants that must be said, it’s just concentration and experience. Once I turn ‘18, in 5 months, I won't have to think about anything I do, it will just happen.
I took her to the center of the Order, a place only those whom can risk their lives come to. We have had one or two lost woods men, none of which were ever found. Otherwise this place is isolated. Funny thing about our isolation is that, I could have just walked outside and walked into the woods and would have walked right into this place. It’s not that far into the woods. But people don’t look were they are not welcomed, and the woods are no different. Humans are not welcomed, they trespass. In these woods wondering too far into the wrong part of the woods is deadly. But I don’t complain, we cover our tracks and no one outside of the Order would compromise our secrets.
“Why are we here?”
“Cuz I need to pick up a few things.”
“But I don’t want to be here, what if they know?”
“they don’t, no one besides our families do, you come from the third line coven do you really think our secrets will be told to those whom aren’t part of the higher part of the coven?”
“No.”
“Then stop worrying.”
“What does our fair Lacey have to worry about?” a voice said from behind us.
“None of your business, Devon, now leave.” I said, taking a defensive.
“Kirstein, what is wrong? Why are you so eager to fight?”
Devon was 5’11, strongly built and ruggedly handsome. He had, like everyone else, piercing black eyes, but his were different. There was only hatred, strength, and power behind those eyes, no other emotion that anyone could see. his eyes were lined with long dark lashes and his jet black hair feel gently over his eyes, it wasn’t long enough to make him look like a vampire from the 1600’s but it was long enough to tell you he was probably born in the 1600’s.
“Once again leave.”
He stepped back and was gone; I could still feel his presence because he hadn’t left yet. On the contrary, he was standing right behind me, “listen little witch, I don’t take orders from a vampire or from witches, sucks that your both. For the next 5 months I rule these parts, not you. All your taking over is the witches coven, you will have to battle for the vampires. You may be strong because you have both bloods coursing in your veins, but I know they fight about who is stronger. You forget, my brother was one, And you also forget that I killed him the day before his big 18th birthday for trying to rule me. Don’t think I won't do the same to you. Got that?”
I would have fought back and tried to beat him down, but not only was he stronger than me, he also held a weapon that is deadly to vampires and witches, a silver knife. One stab in the back in the right spot and I was finished.
“Yes Devon.”
“Good, as long as we are on parting terms I will be off, until we meet again Kirstein.” He kissed me on my cheek and disappeared, his body, his presence, his ego finally gone.
“Are you ok?”
“Yes I'm fine.” I said, wiping his kiss from my cheek.
“I don’t understand why you put up with him.”
“Because not only is he stronger than me for the next few months, but he is also… my fiancé.”
“What! When did this happen!?!?!?!?!”
“Six months ago, I was called to a coven meeting and my mother was the one to tell me. Apparently, a half breed must marry a full breed. But not just any full breed, the half breed must be part of the full breed.”
“You’re making no sense.” Lacey said, sitting on a bench that was nearby.
“Ok ummm…. Devon is full vampire, I am half vampire half witch, so I have to marry a full vampire or a full witch, the full witch from the other coven is already married, so I got stuck with a full vampire. And Devon is the next one to rule after his father. So Devon knows and I know that once I turn ’18 I will be married to him.”
“But you don’t love him.”
“That’s where the witches come into play. See at the ceremonies the bride and groom are told to drink from this cup. They cup has something in it, not a love potion but something similar. It’s to make you see what you do love about your now spouse, and it helps when the two have a small crush on each other.”
“You have a crush on Devon?”
“Kinda, I like when he is in his vampire state, and sometimes when he is in his pretend human state. It’s just that when he is in his human state he becomes a pompous, cocky little brat. But when he is a vampire, he is strong and smart. Everything about him is just graceful and perfect. I’ve watched him fight before, and every move is planned out in his head and every move he has a better one to throw the enemy off. I don’t know. But I do know that he likes me, no matter how much he would want to deny it stuff like threatening me and having me close to him. Signs as my mother call them. She said my father did the same thing. The kisses should say it all.”
“Nice, so you are betrothed to someone whom as of now gets on your nerves.”
“Yes. He said something that I hate.”
“Which was?”
“I will not take over the vampires’ coven, only the witches. But what he apparently doesn’t know is that we rule them together. If I lose a battle and am over taken he must give up his title as well.”
“I didn’t know that.”
“Yes that is what I have found out over the years.”
“Interesting.”
“Yea.”
We walked down the alley, and turned into a little store that was dimly lit.
“I can’t see in her Kirstein.”
“If you had your eyes you would be able to.”
“Whatever.”
“Sit down.”
“Can I help you?” the lady behind a bookshelf said.
“Possibly, I am in search of a witch.”
“There are many of them.”
“As I know. I am half of one.”
“What can I help you with dear?”
“Finding a witch.”
“I am Salena, of the darkest coven.”
“Wrong, I am Kirstein of the darkest coven. You are not in my coven I would have known you.”
“You do not know everyone in the coven.”
“Yes I do, I am Kirstein Knightley of the darkest coven. I am born of the second royalist family in the coven. I know EVERYONE in the coven. My mother is Roldan Knightley, second strongest witch in the darkest coven. My father is Tristan Knightley, second strongest vampire in the black abyss coven.”
“Uh- I um- what can I do for you my princess?”
“Find me a witch.”
“Who my princess.”
“I do not know her name.”
“Umm how am I supposed to-” Salena stuttered.
“Figure it out. I will be in touch. O but before I leave… what coven are you from?”
“Um the grey light coven. I am the 18th in line to becoming the head.”
“So you are a weak child whom is trying to be strong. You will keep our conversation secret. If I find out it is spoken to other than us three, I will give your name and coven to my mother and the higher ups. Then I will deal with you personally.” I said, turning on my heels, “like I said I will be in touch.”
“Yes ma’am.”
“Let’s go Lacey.”
Lacey got up and grabbed my upper arm, “why did you threaten her?”
“You don’t find out much do you?” I asked, pushing open the door.
“No, why is it bad?”
“She is dishonoring her coven by claiming she is from another coven. She is disrespecting our coven by claiming to from ours. Considering how weak she is, she is using our coven to get popularity. The darkest coven doesn’t allow that.”
“Oh.”
“What is your coven?”
“My coven is havoc. That is all we do is create havoc and mayhem. But we do it respectfully.”
“I know, otherwise you would have been dealt with, you and your coven.”
We walked in silence; Lacey knows how strong I will become and how strong I am now. She dare not mess with me for the cost will be greater than her life is worth. I do not play when it comes to my coven. My mother is in my coven she treats everyone as her family because we are in some way. Whether it is because of actual blood, or the length in which we have known each other.
“Kirstein, where are we going to now?”
“I need herbs.”
“For?”
“A potion and I am running low on wolfs vein.”
“Ok.”
“Do you wish to sleep?”
“Yes, usually I would be down to travel the world in one night, but this stupid human body makes me tired quickly.”
“I shall send you back to my house and be home shortly.”
“Thank you.”
I concentrated on Lacey and sent her back to my basement, than I headed to the herb store. I felt the presence again, Devon.
“Well lovely to meet you here.”
“Why are you following me Devon? Don’t you have others to follow?”
“I do not follow anyone.” He said, He sighed deeply, calming himself before continuing, “Anyway, I don’t think that the future coven ruler should be walking by herself.”
“I have done it before; tell me why you wish to be in my presence.”
“Keep pushing me Kirstein, you should know better than anyone my temper.”
I thought back to that day… it was several hundred years ago. I had been wondering around the Order and had stumbled upon Devon and a subordinate of his. The subordinate had claimed he hadn’t been able to get the information that Devon had asked for. Devon yelled and punished him, with death. My eyes had widened and I placed too much pressure on my right foot, which was on a pile of dead twigs. One snapped and Devon looked directly at me. I turned to run, knowing he would catch me but more afraid of what he would do to me I stayed and said what was on my mind.
He grabbed my arm and swung my back into a tree. I heard my head snap against it and create a dent in the tree. He placed his hand over my mouth and the other on my throat.
‘Tell me why I shouldn’t rip out your throat now.’
I mumbled what I was and from which covens, even though his hand was over my mouth I knew he could hear what I was saying. He released me and told me, ‘remember what you saw here and how my anger turns ugly, if we meet again in the future don’t underestimate me, next time you won't be so lucky.’
I looked at him and sighed, “You haven’t changed Devon, still the scared little boy.”
“Scared? Of what!”
“Of me. You need me to become the head of the vampires’ coven, which is why I am still alive and why you won't kill me in the future. You need me. And you know one day, soon, I will become stronger than you and you won't be able to kill me.”
“You are so sure of yourself, I don’t need you!”
“Ask your father if you do. I bet he will say you do.”
“Why are you like this? You know I like you and I know you like me-”
“What makes you say that?”
“You said it earlier.”
My eyes widened and I felt my cheeks burn, “why would you speak such none sense?”
“Ha, you think I don’t have someone watching you? Your safety guarantees my spot. My subordinate over heard you and Lacey talking.”
I blind punched him, sending him staggering into a bench. I jumped three feet off the ground and kicked him in the stomach. He went crashing onto his back and I was sitting on his chest. I pinned his arms to the ground, “what did your subordinate tell you! What did he say?!”
“About what!”
“Tell me the entire conversation!”
“It was about you! Don’t make me regret not killing you before!”
“Tell me every word or I will find your pet and get the information my way.”
“You can’t do that.”
“Watch me.”
He stared at me, and then smiled amused, “want me to keep her secret? You will do as I say, no questions asked.”
“You will keep her secret or I will take you to the higher ups.”
“And tell them what? Last time I checked, hiding a human in the Order and in the humans’ domain was forbidden.”
“She was- is a vampire, once the witch that did this to her is found I will make sure she is one again.”
“But until then, you are hiding a human, former vampire or not she is still a human. And how will your parents think when they have to be sentenced with you.”
I looked at him, searching for some kind of lie in what he said. I reached out with my mind; all vampires can, and attempted to mess with his mind. His shields went up instantly.
“Why would you try to do that?” I hear him say in my head.
“Keep her secret, and mine.”
“Why should I? All you do is try my patience and it’s terribly annoying.”
“Devon, please, as you future wife, Keep our secret.”
He looked at me, his amusement was gone. I saw compassion and love, something I have never seen before, “I will keep your secret, as you husband.”
I let go of his hands, sat up and dropped my head down, “thank you.”
He propped himself up on his elbows, the amusement was back on his face.
“What?”
“I think we should save this until our wedding night, someone might get the wrong idea.”
I jumped up and landed beside him, “you know it wasn’t like that!” my face burned with embarrassment.
“Oh I know,” he said getting to his feet, “but others might not.”
I turned away from him and crossed my arms. He walked up behind me, I heard each footstep even though to a humans hearing they would have made no sound. He placed his hands on my shoulders, “the next time you want me on my back and you on top… let’s get to a place with a cozy bed.”
I swung back and hit the air.
“I’ll be seeing you Kirstein.” He said, kissing my cheek from in front of me before disappearing again.
Ugh! I thought, every freaking time!
I walked toward the herb store thinking, Devon knew her secret. How long would he keep it between us? Has he already said something?
“Can I help you Kirstein?”
I looked up, taken out of my trance, “yea I um need the stuff on this list in large quantities.”
“Let me see.”
Stefani took my list. She is roughly 5’8ish, she has delicate black eyes. She is what we call a lover not a fighter, unlike Devon, Lacey, and me we are all fighters. No matter what you are mixed with, half breed or full, if your eyes are delicate you are considered weak. The only ones who prove that to be wrong are my mother and Stefani. As she turned away from me, to look for my supplies, her long black hair moved than fell down her back. Stefani was fairly built; she could take down all of the 1000 year old vampires and some of the 2000 year old ones. She was strong and everyone respected her.
“Child I do not have wolfs vein.”
“I need that, how do you not have any?”
“My carrier was ambushed while bringing my shipment.”
“Ugh, is there a substitute?”
“What spell are you doing?”
“A finder’s spell.”
“Oh no hunny, I'm sorry that spell has to have exact ingredients.”
“Lovely.”
Stefani turned to the counter, where she had placed all of my other ingredients. She waved her hand and the stuff levitated, she waved her other hand and several bags opened underneath them. The stuff began to drop into the bags gently.
“That will be $4232.58.”
I pulled out my wallet and pulled out a card, “you know I am good for it.”
“You know how many favors you owe me.”
“And you know I do everything you ask of me, I also end up paying you back half of the money if not more.”
“Yes I know.” She smiled.
I walked out of the store, bags in hand, and headed to my final destination… the blood bank. I don’t normally go to the blood bank, I usually feed on humans like any other vampire, But unfortunately I have my very own personal Robin Hoods and they wouldn’t let me feed without a fight. The wolves are stupid mutts that need to be taught a lesson. I personally don’t want to teach them that lesson.
I walked into the blood bank, “I need 15 bags.”
“You’re leaving on a three day trip?” the bank teller asked.
“No, I wish I was, I have a pesky little wolf problem by my house. You know wolfs, so noble. I can’t get a good meal without them trying to attack. I will deal with my problem in three days time.”
He looked concerned, “you could ask the Order’s guards to-”
“And start another war? As if. I will handle it.”
“Yes ma’am, umm what coven?”
“Darkest.”
“Oh, um… the ration for darkest is already taken.”
“What!” I slammed my fists on the counter, “how can it be taken! We are the second strongest in the land! Ours is always doubled!”
“Scalene took some people on a trip, I'm sorry ma’am.”
The teller was cowering, he was maybe a couple hundred years old, most of the tellers are young. He has every right to fear me.
“Enough of this.”
I turned and left, I will deal with Scalene later. I walked into the court yard and continued my quick stride until I completely disappeared into thin air. I reappeared in my basement and headed to my room.
*Chapter 2*
“Where are you going?” Lacey asked me, as she was staring at herself in the mirror.
“I thought you were tired.”
“I was I took a nap.”
Lacey is 5’10, her eyes are blacker than most I have seen but I choose not to question why. Many in her coven are like that as well. Her shoulder length light brown hair hugged her shoulders and framed her face. It was layered and highlighted with blonde. She was very light on her feet and very swift, but she lost her balance fairly easily. She had her muscles and was fairly ripped, but she hardly ever showed her muscles.
“So where are you going?”
“To hunt, I am thirsty.”
“Didn’t we agree to have you get blood from the bank?”
“I tried but stupid Scalene took it all with her minions.”
“Oh. Be careful.”
“Always am.”
I opened my window and jumped out of the three story house. I landed gracefully on my toes and threw all of my shields up, my mental shields and defensive. I stretched my mind out in all directions, looking for one of those nasty beasts. There were three of them, two of which were sleeping. So I only have to deal with the one. I strengthen my mind and stretch it out a little further. I felt two people’s presences. One of which is male. I think of my thirst and decide to go for the male.
I vanish and appear approximately 20 feet behind him. As I begin to approach him, I feel one of the mutt’s stirring. I gently went into his mind and numbed his nightmare. Unfortunately for him none of my magic and strength will numb the pain of what his boss will give him. I continue up to this guy, and stumble into him.
“Oh my goodness I am so sorry.” I say in a pathetic voice.
“No, I'm sorry. I didn’t even hear you come up.”
“I am a klutz it’s my fault.”
“Are you ok?”
Gotcha, I think.
“What are you doing?” I hear one of the mutts growl.
“Eating, this is my territory; I will not be run out by some dogs.” I send straight to his mind.
“This is not your territory, it is the humans.”
“When I want a mutt’s point of view, I will ask.”
“We will take you down.”
“Is that before or after the human sees you?”
“Could I help you with anything?”
That conversation with the mutt went on in our heads and since thinking is faster than saying it didn’t even seem weird that I hadn’t answered right away.
“Yes, I was looking for my wallet, I was jogging around here about 10 minutes ago and it fell out of my pocket.”
“Leave him.”
“No.” I sent a sharp pain straight to his mind, it might have blinded him for a few seconds, but his howl was loud.
“Did you hear that?”
“Yes, it sounded like a wolf.” The man said.
“I am Terry.”
“Hi, I'm Jake.”
“Well Jake I'm thirsty.”
“Let’s go get some coffee, my treat.”
“I would but I am hungrier, for your blood.”
“Wh-”
Sleep. With that he went crashing to the floor. Why bother catching a dead man. I told him to sleep with my mind. A subtle thought but it gets the job done. I walked over to Jake and knelt down beside him. I cradled his head in my hands and tilted it slightly. I saw his pulse in his neck slowly beat; he was in a resting state. I leaned my head toward his neck and let my fangs expose themselves, as I punctured his skin.
I tasted the coppery sweet taste run down my throat and fill me. My thirst began to disappear and I became somewhat stronger. I heard growls behind me and stretched out with my mind, I wish not to be disturbed.
“What?” I growled impatient.
“Let him go.”
“He is as good as dead anyway.”
“Did you not hear Jason? He said let him go.” Another wolf said.
“Now which one is Jason?”
“You disgusting beast let him go.”
“Beast? Maybe, disgusting? I don’t think so.”
“We know so.” The third wolf finally said.
“Let me finish my meal and I will teach all three of you a lesson.”
“No!”
“Fine.” I said, removing my lips from Jake.
The wolves were on their guard, and so was I. I, personally, would not be killed by a bunch of stupid dogs. I stood up straight and licked the blood from my lips. I let my mind slowly, ever so slowly reach out and grab hold of all three of theirs.
“You dare mess with me?” I asked amused.
I snapped my fingers, something I don’t have to do but thought it would be enjoyable right now, and sent a bolt of pain to their nervous system. The two little mutts howled in pain while the other one, the leader, remained silent and shaken. I snapped my fingers again sending two more shots to their system.
“Tell me, who told you to come on my territory? Hmm? Obviously someone stronger than you.” I say looking at the leader, who was now putting his face on the ground to stop from howling. “Come on little doggy tell me.”
“no.” he growled.
“Then your comrades will have to suffer for your answer.” I sent one shock to the leader and three to each wolf on his flanks. The one on the left fell to the ground and began to turn back into a human form while the other was still trying to hold on. “Your partner doesn’t look so good, but as long as you don’t tell me who sent you I will continue to send shocks into his body.”
“No, I will not tell you,” he looked at his partner, “I am sorry.”
His partner took all his strength to nod to his leader before howling again in pain. I smiled at his bravery and looked at his leader. “You see, your partners, your friends aren’t as strong willed as you, if I sent two more bolts into his system he is done for, but since I can’t enjoy his blood because it is harmful to my kind, I will leave him for a pack of bears. All you have to do is tell me and I will stop the pain.”
The leader looked at me, and sighed, “I will tell you.”
“Yes and before you do, you will transform into your human body. That way I can take you down with little effort if you try something stupid.”
He nodded and he and the other transformed back. They kneeled before me with a hand in their laps, unlike the werewolves that humans talk about; real werewolves lose all of their clothing. That is why they usually have clothes nearby or return home before transforming back. These three don’t have the luxury.
“Who is it?”
“A wolf ma’am.”
“Whom?”
“He is known by your kind as Dante.”
A chill ran down my spine. Dante is the second in line for the wolves; he is the next in command, “why is Dante sending a threat?”
“We are not a threat.”
“Than what are you?”
“As he called us we are welcome to his neighborhood presents.”
“What! His neighborhood?!?!?”
“Yes, he said, ‘I want them to know whom they are up against. Once I take the pack there will be no stopping us. I will take over their cities and they will no longer be allowed to hunt. Let’s start with the next in lines soon to be wife and husband. We will be their welcome home presents.’”
I began to pace back and forth. I was still in their minds and there was no lie that I could find. I began thinking about Devon’s town and how he had handled the ‘presents’. I looked back at the wolves, the leader looked defeated and the other two looked pained. I sighed and looked turned back to them, “you are now under MY command. What I say goes if there is any problem with your new arrangements; I will send you back to Dante in a doggy bag. Understood.”
The wolves looked at their leader, waiting for his order. He nodded his head and I had three new wolves to watch, “what are your names?”
“I’m Jason, to my left is John, and to my right is Spencer.”
“So what you will do is this, two of you will be on patrol looking for anymore of Dante’s fledglings. The other one is going to pay Devon a little visit. Now my soon to be husband isn’t like me, He will fight first and ask questions later, so what you will do is stop on his door step and return to human form. You will be kneeling as you are now, before him, tell him I sent you and if he doesn’t believe you have him pay me and Lacey a little visit. You will back up 20 ft before returning to wolf form and return on my doorstep and wait my command. Is that understood?”
“Yes.”
“Good, so which of you lucky dogs is going to pay Devon a visit?”
“I will.” John said.
“Ok, dismissed. Let me return to my food.”
They stood up and proceeded to turn back into wolves, “oh boys.” I said before they left, “I think you should know, I have control of your minds, I hear and know all you are thinking of. If I feel like I am going to be threatened… I will kill you were you stand. You understand don’t you?”
They bowed their heads, in understandment, and headed off. I returned to my meal and drank him dry. I stood up and grabbed the body with one hand and took him into the woods, I places him beside a tree and wrote a little note to the Cleaners.
The Cleaners are a group of vampires and witches that search for bodies those careless vampires leave everywhere. I always have some way of disposing of those I kill, but I rarely kill. So I left a note saying: I had no time to dig a grave or dispose of it, sorry. Sincerely Kirstein of the darkest coven. The fact that I am from the darkest coven will stop them from complaining. Because the darkest coven doesn’t leave evidence of their feeding behind, we keep everything clean and tidy.
I walked out of the woods and appeared in my room. I will rule this town how I wish not how my parents want me to. I looked for Lacey, she wasn’t in the room. I walked into the guest room and found her face down in her pillow. I thought she was dead until she stirred from something in her dream. I closed the door and walked back to my room.
“Do you think that was funny?!”
“Devon, it took you so long to get here.”
“Why the hell would you send a wolf to my door step?”
“Well apparently, Dante thinks that they make great ‘welcome to HIS neighborhood’ presents.”
“What are you talking about?”
“Didn’t you have a few wolves on your territory?”
“Yes, and I disposed of them just as quickly as they came.”
“Well,” I said, walking over to my bed, “I actually talked to mine, after sending so many very painful shocks to their systems. They said that Dante sent them; he is welcoming us to his neighborhood.”
“What is he talking about? He may be next in line but this is OUR neighborhood.”
“Yes as I know.”
“I can’t wait til you turn of age!”
“Why?”
“Because, then I will be the head of the vampire coven and I will wage war on them.”
“Why would you do that?”
“What are you talking about why?” he growled.
“Think about it, if the first thing you do when you have power is wage a war, the people in the Order will trust you as much as they did Alek, which they didn’t. You will be hated and possibly over thrown before your first century.”
“What do you suggest?”
“We hit Dante where it hurts, before I come of age.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Dante wants power as much as you do, if we can get his followers to stop following…”
“He will have no use but to step down and lose his place on top.”
“Exactly, I already have three on our side, and you disposed of how many?”
“He sent five to me, and all five are loving the ocean.” He smiled amused.
“So that’s eight. I don’t know how we will get this plan to work but we will see if we can.”
“And if anything we could always change the plan later.”
“Exactly, I am tired, would you like a wolf to guard your town from more of Dante’s followers?”
“Yes, the one that you sent earlier will do.”
“He should be on my doorstep.”
We walked downstairs and I opened my door to John kneeling on my porch, “you will go back to Devon’s town and keep watch and you will trade off with the others every few hours. Is that understood?”
“Yes ma’am.”
“Bye Devon, see you again real soon.” I smiled to him.
“Bye.” He kissed me on my cheek and took off in a run.
John followed behind him as I headed back upstairs. I walked briskly into my room and dived to my bed. I grabbed my pillow and cuddled up with it and drifted off to sleep. As I slept I dreamed, some of my kind do from time to time, but our dreams are our memories. My past is not something I am proud of, but I push all of those memories to the back of my mind. The only time they reveal themselves is when I dream. My past is gruesome and full of blood, I don’t like to relive it but I must sometimes.
“Kirstein what are you doing?”
“He is going to die if I don’t save him.”
“Leave him be before you die with him.”
“Kevin I can’t leave him, he’s my cousin.”
“Not by blood! Kirstein you must leave now before we can’t escape.”
“Kevin I-”
“I will come back for him once you’re safe.”
“You swear?”
He sighed and looked away, “yes I swear, now let’s go.”
He grabbed my arm and pulled me away from Justin’s side, I hated leaving him, but Kevin said I had to that he would be back for him. I killed Kevin that night for lying to me, he said he would return for him and he didn’t. He walked out of the building that we were in, I had followed him silently. He came to the place where Justin had been laying, he still hadn’t move and he was barely breathing. Kevin walked up to my, non-blood, cousin and snapped his neck before stabbing him in the heart because just breaking his neck wouldn’t have killed a vampire.
He turned back to walk away and come tell me of his discovery, unfortunately for him I had made a discovery of my own. He jumped when he saw me, “uh-uh-uh Kirstein, what are you- I mean why are you here?”
“This is how you fix it? Killing him? What were you going to tell me Kevin?”
“It’s not how it looks he asked me-”
“He asked you to kill him? I think not. See I have been following you since you left the building you took me to. I may not be the strongest vampire, yet but my hearing is just as good as any others. I was only 15ft away; I would have heard him say anything.”
He stumbled back and began to stutter, “You don’t understand.”
“What don’t I understand? Never mind don’t answer that. Here is something for you to remember, he was part of my coven. And I do anything for my coven.”
I disappeared and reappeared behind him; I placed one hand to his throat and whispered; “now you die.”
He shook his head back and forth and began pleading for his life, “please don’t do this, I have a girlfriend and-”
“And Justin had a wife and kids, how am I ever going to explain your mess up to them?” I said, ripping his throat from his neck, “I will take your blood as a somewhat closure.”
And I drank til he was past death, no one would have stopped me and no one dared to. I went to my father’s coven meeting and told them of what I done, I was going to be sentenced to something harsh until I told them why I had done it. I told them that Justin was a part of my coven and was still breathing, with a wife and children. They weighed each crime and I was let go for helping my coven when I was supposed to.
I woke up to the sound of a blow drier coming on; I looked at my clock which flashed 5:45a.m.
“Why don’t you wake up at a regular time?”
“Why don’t you?”
“I had a long night unlike you.”
“Sorry, how did you feed?”
“The dogs are on our side now; they do as I say for fear of death.”
“Nice, you were always an evil one.”
“That I am.”
“What are you doing today?”
“Nothing of importance. Why do you ask?”
“I wanted you to take me back to the Order to get some stuff.”
The Order, I had still neglected to tell Lacey of mine and Devon’s conversation. I wished I wouldn’t have to tell her, for her fear will triple instantly.
“Lacey, tell me what you need, I will fetch it for you.”
“No that is fine; I wanted to see my mother also.”
“Lacey you cannot go back to the Order right now.”
“Why?”
“Well, yesterday, after you left, Devon had made it his mission to tell me that he knew our secret.”
“What secret?” she said, shutting off the blow drier.
I could hear her pulse start to quicken and I knew it wouldn’t be long before she began to panic, “your secret.”
“What! He knows? How?”
“You were talking to me about it in the Order and he had one of his subordinates following me. Needless to say they over heard everything and told him everything.”
“But- but you said if anyone knows we- we-”
“Would be sentenced to death, I know what I said.”
“But-”
“But, he won't tell, I asked him as his future wife to keep my secret and yours. He said he would, the thing is now we must do everything in our power not to get him mad.”
“Why?” she asked, walking out of the bathroom and sitting on my couch.
“He might tell out of hatred.”
“Lovely.”
I could still hear her heart race and I slowly crawled into her mind, her shields went up but they were weak compared to any vampire or witches. I gently soothed her worry and calmed her down; her heartbeat began to lower extremely. I feared sending her into shock and eased up a little. Sometimes I don’t know my own strength until it is too late. She sighed and drifted off to sleep, unaware of my intrusion into her mind.
I picked her up and took her back into the guestroom, laying her down and laying a blanket across her. I turned and felt a pressure on my mind, all my shields were up, someone was trying to know what I was thinking and tap into my mind. I closed the door and growled, “Who is there?”
There was a little more pressure against my shields and then they stopped, “it is I.”
“That helps oh so much.”
“Child hold your tongue with me.”
“I hold my tongue for no one, who dare trespasses in my domain?”
“Your domain, ha, I think not.”
“Face me if you wish to fight, or leave at once.”
“Come outside if you wish to see me.”
I concentrated on the outside and was standing on my porch, “now come out of your shadows.”
There was a small rustle by the bushes and a tall fairly thin man walked out of them. He was wearing a pair of khaki pants and a button down shirt. He had light brown hair that fell down into his face but seemed to be mostly pulled back. His eyes, even from where I was standing, seemed to be a light yellowish color with a black outline to them. He tilted his head from side to side and cracked his neck before smiling at me.
“What’s wrong? Didn’t think you would ever meet me?”
“Dante, you know you were cuter in my head.”
“Oh the stories people- I'm sorry creatures will tell you.”
“Why do you come to my domain, out in the open you are defenseless.”
“Why do you think that?”
“I know that. You are on my territory not yours.”
“Well, I came to see how my pets were doing and one of they opened their mouth about Jason joining you. So I helped them to see the- the light.” He smiled, very amused.
“You wish to fight now?”
“No, I wish to congratulate you on your almost successful mission to turn my guys against me. But see what you have to know is that, I don’t need these weaklings to follow me; I have the stronger ones that would choose death over switching sides. These three- I'm sorry eight were just here to welcome you to-”
“You say your neighborhood so help me I will kill you were you stand.”
He lifted up his hands in surrender, “you misunderstood me witch, and I have come to save you a trip. Kill me now and you won't have to do it in the future.”
“You are testing my patience, leave my territory now.”
“On, that’s right; you can’t fight a full werewolf huh? Your only a half breed, and until your ‘18th birthday you are defenseless, even on your own territory.”
“You know Dante,” Devon said from behind him, holding a knife to his throat, “she may be defenseless, but she is my wife and I will kill you for her.”
“Ah, Devon, you’re so noble too bad for you it is in vein.”
“What are you talking about?”
“I'm talking about, kill me and my pet behind Kirstein will kill her.”
Devon looked at me as I turned around; there was a wolf, in human for, behind me with a silver knife in his hand. I went to move but was incased in a witches circle. I was defenseless and cornered with a weapon. I looked at Devon who was torn about what to do.
“It’s your choice Devon, is your hatred of me stronger than your love for her? Will you let her die over your pride?”
“Kirstein, I- I-”
He released Dante and backed up about five feet. The ‘pet’ backed up about five feet as well.
“Release her Dante.”
“I think you should do it. I don’t want to release her and have you both come and try to kill me.”
“Your pet and I will switch places on the count of three than you will leave this territory.”
“Deal.”
Devon and the pet switched sides and Devon walked backwards toward me, keeping his eyes on Dante.
“Leave now Dante.” I said, regaining my voice.
“See you guys later.”
*Chapter 3*
He turned into a beast before our very eyes than turned and ran. Devon waited until his presence was gone before undoing the witches circle.
“Are you ok?” he asked freeing me.
“Yes.”
“How did you get into this?”
“He asked me to come outside. I naturally appeared on my porch; I didn’t walk down stairs and see the circle.”
Devon grabbed my shoulders and pulled me into his chest, hugging me. I looked up at him and saw the look on his face. I honestly scared him, not the fear of him being unable to rule, but the fear of losing me was written across his face.
“I'm sorry.”
“You are not at fault.”
“I need to go to the Order.”
“Why?”
“Lacey needs some things. Is our secret still safe?”
“Yes, I have not told a soul.”
“Thank you Devon.”
“What are husbands for?”
“Fiancés.”
“Yes, for now.”
“I will take her to the Order and gather her things, than I will be back.”
“Where are the wolves?”
“Dead, Dante killed them without a second thought.”
“Amusing.” He looked over his shoulder, “I need to shower, I smell of dog.”
“You can use mine.”
“But I have no clothes here.”
“Right.”
“You should shower before leaving to the Order, you smell of the mutt that was behind you.”
“He never touched me.”
“Yes, but anyone with our nose will smell them on you and mistake you for being in allegiance with them.”
“True, I will before I leave.”
“Until we meet again Kirstein.” He kissed me on my cheek than left without another word.
I walked inside and headed back up to my room. Lacey’s door was open and she was sitting on the bed.
“Did you leave to the Order without me?”
“No, I had to deal with a troublesome dog.”
“Oh, are we still going?”
“Yes, let me get my stuff ready and we will head off.”
“I don’t understand.”
“What don’t you understand Lacey?”
“You claimed that you couldn’t use magic in the open that your neighbors would freak out. But you let a werewolf transform on your porch and you don’t say anything about it.”
“Lacey, it is 6:25 a.m. my neighbors have just barely woken up. If any of them might have seen or heard anything I will knock it out of their minds that they saw anything.”
“I don’t understand you.”
“I will not let my parents rule how I control my town. I will switch around all of their memories and deal with it my way.”
“Are you sure?”
“Positive, I do not follow. I will become a leader soon; I cannot follow orders of others.”
“Very interesting.”
“Oh before we leave I have to take a shower. I apparently smell like a dog.”
“Ok, I will get dressed.”
“Alright.”
I walked into my bathroom and shut the door. I turned on the cold water and let it run. Grabbing my hair clip out of my hair I set it down on the counter and began to undress. I stepped into the shower and turned the shower knob.
I stepped out of the shower about 15 minutes later and grabbed my bath robe. I pulled the tie around me and tightened it. I grabbed my brush and brushed my hair out then pulled it back into a ponytail. I walked out into my room and went into my closet and sot out my black pants and black tank top. I threw them onto my bed and then turned to grab my black boots.
“Kirstein are you-” Lacey said, walking into my room without knocking, “I'm sorry I should have-”
“I told you to knock before entering. What if I had a body in here?”
“I've seen a dead body before Kirstein, I have killed before.”
“Yes, but you haven’t seen one since you have been a human.”
“True.”
“Lacey, get out of my room and let me get dressed.”
“Fine.”
She walked out and shut my door letting me get dressed in peace. I walked over into my dresser drawers and pulled out several hex bags. I set them up on each window and but the doors. I usually do this before getting dressed and getting into the shower because of the lack of privacy in my home. These hex bags keep out unwanted guests and stop creatures from entering by using a method that all vampires and most witches use, appearing. Most of them do it to have fun and are usually welcomed but when I'm getting dressed it’s not appreciated.
I finished getting dressed and left the hex bags where they were, I won't be surprised by Dante when I return. I strapped on my thigh knife and then I walked into Lacey’s room and found her dressed and lying on her bed.
“Are you ready?”
“Are you?”
“Do you want me to take you or not?”
“Yes, let’s go.”
“Ok.”
I grabbed her hand and concentrated on a court yard in the Order. We appeared there and we headed to her house.
“I don’t understand why couldn’t we just show up in my court yard?”
“Because, people would question why I am bringing you to and from your house. This way if we show up in different places at different days no one would really notice that.”
“Whatever, but I hate walking.”
“How about this, how about I send you to your house, alone, and I go to the place I need to go to. I will come back to your house when I am done and see if you are done.”
“Ok.”
I sent her to her house and waited until I was unable to see her before leaving to the witch’s store. I walked in and looked around, I didn’t see her and decided to look for her in my mind. I didn’t leave to spot I was standing in but I stretched out my mind in search for her. I found a little thought process in the back of the shop and walked to it. I found my little witch curled into a ball, dying.
“What happened?”
“They came and I couldn’t stop them and they said they were going to kill me.”
“Who said it?”
“No, no they came and wanted to know what I told you. When I said nothing they didn’t believe me, they told me to stop looking for them. I said I was told to by a witch and I had to listen to her for fear of my life. They said I guess you don’t have to worry about that and- and-”
“What did they do to you?”
“I don’t know, I can’t remember. I just know that they knew I was looking for them.”
“How?!”
“The spell I used.”
“Which was?”
“Look in my chest in the back, all of my spell books and spell books from others are in there.”
“We are in the back, how do you have other peoples spell books?”
“They were my mothers and grandmothers, we had also won some in an auction they were having for witches that have died long ago. One of the spells was a tracker spell. What I didn’t know was it was easy for the witch or creature in question to find the tracker.”
“What do you want me to do with these spell books?”
“Keep the ones you want return the rest to my coven I will not need them any-”
That was her last thought before she passed on. I lit a single white candle, a sacred thing witches do to let the deceased being find the light in the new world. I turned to the chest and opened it, finding several spell books. I found spell books from covens that I have never heard of before and others I didn’t wish to know.
How could this witch have gotten these books? I thought.
I reached in for the next book and grabbed a book from my coven, but more fascinating was that the book belonged to my great-great grandmother. I grabbed this book and shrunk it down to the size of a business card than stuck it in my pocket. I concentrated on the rest of the books and her body, and they slowly levitated. I placed the books on top of her and walked out of the store with them right behind me. I couldn’t use magic to get to her coven because my magic was concentrated on her.
It is harder to concentrate on a dead body than it is several alive ones. I had to get to her coven on foot. The grey light coven wasn’t far from the shop, but I still hated having others look at me curiosity on their faces. I walked up the hill to her coven and sent ice cold glairs at anyone who looked at me questioningly. They quickly looked down and did not look up again until they were certain I wasn’t looking at them.
Presenting myself to a weak coven is always a challenge; they usually think stronger covens want to fight for their loyalty. The darkest coven doesn’t care about this coven because it is ruled to the third highest coven which is ruled by us and so we do not worry about them.
“What do you want?” One of the guards said, steeping in front of the door.
“You will let me through and speak to whomever is in charge.”
“Why should I listen to you?”
“I am from the darkest coven; I wish not to leave a dead body on your doorstep unannounced. Now let me in before I forcibly come in.”
“What dead body?”
“This one.” I said, stepping aside for her to see.
He face was instantly saddened. I didn’t know how she knew her but I knew they were close.
“Salena, my dear.”
“I take it you knew her.”
She nodded as a tear began to roll down her cheek, “She- she was my older sister.”
“I'm sorry, I found her barely breathing. She told me to gather her spell books and bring them to her coven. She also allowed me to keep any that I wanted. I kept one; it had belonged to my great- great grandmother and is from my coven. That is the only one I took.”
“Ok. Um please come in, I will take you to Diana now.”
“Thank you.”
She took me in to see Diana and I laid the body before her, and placed the spell books beside her. I explained almost everything and them to mourn. I walked back to the center of the Order and thought about who could have done this. My new spy was dead my watch dogs gone too and my friend still a human. I looked around and wondered, I come across a bench and sat down for a few minutes before I was called for in my head.
“Where are you?”
“Who is speaking?”
“Your mother.”
“Whom is looking for me?”
“Your father and Lacey, she is done and wishes to return back to the house.”
“Can you send her back and tell her I will be there shortly. Why does father want me?”
“Because, you and Devon were supposed to be in the vampire’s coven at 6:30a.m. And neither of you have shown up.”
“Tell dad I will get Devon and we will be there in 10 minutes.”
“Fine.”
“I love you.”
“I love you too honey, be safe.”
“Always am.”
I threw my mental shields up, not wanting an intrusion in my head again, and walked into nothingness again, appearing in Devon’s house. Devon sounded like he was upstairs and busing himself with other matters, I began to climb up his stairs but before I could reach the landing was unable to move.
“Who dares enter unannounced into my domain?”
“Devon, really a witches circle?”
“Yes, why are you here Kirstein?”
“Father called a meeting and we were supposed to be there at 6:30 a.m.”
“Oh.”
“He is waiting for us.”
“Let us go than.”
“I can’t.”
“Why?”
“Your circle.”
“Oh, yes.” He jumped up and levitated long enough to undo the witches circle.
“Very smart putting it where no one would look first.”
“Thank you, o but I do have a question first before we leave. Why didn’t you just appear in my room?”
“I do not like it when people do it to me, why would I do it to someone else?”
“Ah I see.”
“That is why when I am changing or about to take a shower I place hex bags around my room to keep people from entering my room without my knowledge.”
“I might have to have you make me up a few of those.”
I smiled and touched his arm, “let us not be any later than we already are.”
“Good idea.”
I concentrated on the vampire’s coven and brought us both there. The guards were thrilled to see us, obviously my father had threatened them if we had not arrived when I stated. They escorted us into the great hall and then left. My father and Devon’s father, Sartor, had been seated at the head of the table. Sartor was seated to my father’s left, because this coven belonged to my father and he was a guest; to his right was my brother, not by blood but from my father’s coven, Seth. They all looked plenty mad even though Seth had no reason to be.
“Why are you two late?” my father asked, anger slightly in his tone.
“We had some trouble.” I said.
“What kind of trouble?” Sartor asked.
“Nothing we couldn’t handle together.” Devon answered.
“Oh and what was this mysterious trouble might I ask?” Seth spoke up.
I looked at him, eyes narrowing, “I would rather you didn’t.”
“Why is that?”
“Because it is matters to Devon and me alone, it is handled.” I looked at my father and Sartor, “tell us what the meeting is or was about.”
“Why are you trying my patience daughter?”
“I do not try them purposely father, I try them because you wish not to drop what has already been solved.”
Devon laid a hand over mine under the table, I threw up my mental shields and so did he. I looked at him and he slightly shook his head, telling me to back off while I was ahead. I rolled my eyes and nodded slightly. I looked back at my father and let him continue.
He stood up out of his chair and began to circle the table, “the meeting was about a claim.”
“What was this claim Tristan?” Devon asked.
He continued to circle the table, each step getting closer to us, “the claim was that you had a nasty little case of wolves in your towns.”
“And you heard this from whom?”
“A bank teller told a guard who mentioned it to me, needless to say I found out. Now why wouldn’t either of you think this was important enough to tell us!” he said slamming his fists onto the table by us.
Devon tensed while I stayed neutral. I refused to show my father any fear for fear of losing my spot come my birthday. My father straighten himself up and sighed.
“We did not tell you because you would have done one of a few things. 1. You would have sent guards to be sure nothing happened. 2. You would have killed them and that would have done nothing for us about finding out why they were sent. 3. You would have captured them and tortured them until they told you what you wanted to hear than killed them, which then we would have been unprotected and the beast that sent them after us would have come and captured us or killed us or 4. You would have captured the mutts and there would have been another war against them and Devon and I would have to deal with it as soon as we became of age and took over. None of which seem like a good idea.” I said, looking my father is the eyes.
My father looked back at Sartor who nodded his head in agreement to me. Seth looked at me, his eyes filled with something that he was masking very well, his eyes flickered over to Devon and instantly his eyes changed from this mask to hatred. Devon paid no attention to him, otherwise there would have been a fight right now, but instead paid attention to our father’s whom were having a secret conversation.
Sartor and my father looked at us at the same time, “what is it that you found out?” Sartor asked.
“More than you would have found out.”
“Which is?”
I looked at Devon and we had a private conversation of our own. I held his eyes and sent thoughts into his head, He did the same. You cannot talk to others through your mind without letting most of your shields down, vampires and witches found a way to do it without letting any shields down. Sending thoughts into each other’s head kept your shields up, only that person could get them and no one else could intrude and find out what you are talking about. Most creatures of the night do this when they want to have a silent conversation.
“Should we tell them?”
“It’s up to you.”
“The wolves were at both of our houses.” I said.
“Yes, but you kept yours alive, I killed mine as soon as they came into my territory. It is your story to tell not mine.”
“If it was your story to tell would you?”
“Seeing as how we have dealt with the problem, for now, and both hate having guards around our town I wouldn’t. But I would tell them who is challenging us, as a show of faith and so they know whom to be ready for.”
“That is true on all accounts.”
“So once again, it is up to you.”
“Ok.”
We looked back to our father’s who were waiting on our reply. I looked at Devon again, who nodded in his approval, “There were eight dogs between both of our houses. Three at mine and five at Devon’s,” I never took my glance away from Devon, for fear I would stop talking and be charged withholding information from my coven, “the dogs were sent as presents to welcome us to Dante’s town. He thought they would make excellent welcome home presents and decided to send them to the next in line for the covens, they are somewhat of a warning that when he becomes the pack leader, we will no longer be able to hunt.” I looked to my father and Sartor who were wide eyed and concerned, “now Devon and I took care of it, we do not need and or require guards at our house. I will let you know now the first guard I see will be the last you see of him or me until my birthday when I take over the darkest coven. I don’t mean to sound rude or absurd but we have not needed guards before and we don’t need them now.”
My father bowed his head then looked at Sartor; they had another silent conversation and then looked at us.
“We will require both of you to have one guard living with you until this thing is resolved. They will watch you and keep their eyes open for anyone who threatens you.” Sartor said, “I think it is at least fair to have one guard with you.”
“Will they have to do as we say?” Devon asked.
“Yes, as long as it’s not you are to return home and not guard me anymore.”
“Fine, we accept this.”
I looked at Devon who held my eyes long enough to say, “It will be fine.”
I looked at my father and sighed, “Who will be watching us?”
“Sartor will be choosing who will watch over Devon, I am choosing that Seth watches over you.”
I looked at Seth wide-eyed, “why him? Couldn’t I have a female, or a witch to watch over me?”
“We both decided a vampire would do best to watch over you and Seth is the second best in the coven, he will be taking over when the day comes. I would trust no other to watch over you.”
“I would like a female to watch over Kirstein, and Seth can watch over me.” Devon said, sitting forward in his seat.
“No this way would be much more efficient.” Sartor said.
“I want Devon to be watched by a male.” I said.
“You’re in luck our next strongest is a male.”
“I want the next strongest female to watch me, because I am the strongest vampire female in our coven.”
“No, Seth will watch you and Devon will be watched by Aubrey.”
I looked at Devon who looked crushed; from the look on his face he hated this Aubrey, like I hated Seth. I heard a shift from the other side of the room and looked at Seth. He had a sly, seductive smile on his face. I sent a thought straight to his mind with a little shock right after it, “get that smile off your face!” the shock basically slapped him.
He turned his face away from mine. Mocking me with the pain, “why do you hate that I smile at you?”
“Because your smile is to mock the way I feel right now.”
“You don’t want me as your guard?”
I stood up, “I would sooner have a wolf rip out my throat!” I turned and stormed out of the room, leaving my father, Sartor and Devon with a confused look on their faces.
I heard Devon get up and follow me out of the door, “what’s wrong?”
“I don’t want him to guard me, I would rather be guarded by a stranger than him! He mocks everything I do and for what! What I ask, to make me mad.”
“Kirstein you must calm down.”
“I will do no such thing! I am tired of him and his sly, mocking, seductive smile!”
“Kirstein,” Devon grabbed my arm and pulled me close, “it will only be for a little while.”
“No it won't, how is this going to look? The soon to be coven holder is stuck in her house with a vampire boy months before she is to be married to the soon to be vampire coven holder? It looks disgusting!”
“But I know you, and your coven knows you. You will be fine.”
“No, no! I have to return and tell Lacey why we have a new guest in the- Lacey.”
“What about her?”
I looked at Devon and held his eyes, “Devon, she is human. I will be tried with betrayal.”
“No you won't you said your family-”
“They do, but the coven doesn’t know. He will get one smell of her and take me to the higher ups. What do I do?”
“Talk to your father, explain the situation and ask what to do.”
“This is no use Devon, I lose either way.”
“Then tell Lacey she has to hold up at the hotel, until he’s gone.”
“She won't do that she will think I am betraying her.”
“You have to pick one or the other, either tell your dad or tell Lacey.”
I nodded, breaking our trance. I walked back into the great hall and walked to my father’s side, “father we must talk.”
“Please speak your mind.”
“A silent talk.”
My father looked at me and nodded, “what is it?”
“Father Lacey has yet to be returned to her vampire state.”
“And?”
“father she is still human, if Seth gets a smell of her he will take us to the higher ups and we will be sentenced with betrayal.”
“No, we won't.”
“Why is that father? You think he won't listen to a rule set by the higher ups?”
“Oh he would if it was under a normal situation, but it’s not. He already knows.”
“Mother told him?”
“No, I did.”
“Why!”
“Because, he could be trusted.”
“Says who? What if he hated me and told out of spite?”
“He would be sentenced too for knowing and not saying anything.”
“He just found out.”
“No, his fear of me is great and he has known for a while. He knew I would kill him if he breathed a word before he could tell the higher ups. He would be dead.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, darling I am.” With that he kissed my forehead, breaking our trance.
I looked away and then at Seth. His sly, seductive smile was back on his face as he leaned against a pillar in the great hall. He tilted his head from left to right, cracking the bones in his neck before standing straight and walking over to me. His long hair, dark brown almost black, was pulled back into a low, messy yet neat ponytail; His hair reached center back at least. His eyes were fixed on me, strong piercing black eyes that were framed by his black eyelashes. His outfit, black for the most part consisted of black slacks, a black vest and long sleeved shirt. The only thing that was of any color in his outfit were blood red buttons that kept his vest buttoned, other than that the outfit was as black as the night sky.
“Ready to go?”
“Go pack your stuff, and meet at my house in 45 minutes. I don’t allow tardiness and would hate for you to have to remain outside form me not letting you in.”
“I will be there in 30.”
“See that you are.”
He disappeared and I did as well. I appeared in Devon’s room and waited for his return, which didn’t take more than 5 minutes. He looked at me then sighed, “This is Aubrey, my guard.”
I looked at this mysterious Aubrey; he unlike Seth had platinum blonde hair and softer black eyes, not as soft as my mother’s, but close. You could see the fear they would send into anyone’s heart. He wore a black tight fitting t-shirt and lose black jeans, his shoes were designer, though I didn’t know where from, and he was fairly tall. He seemed to have a serious tone about him, but he could be playful… if he wanted to be. He dropped the bag that he was carrying down and said in a low tone, “where is the room in which I will be staying?”
“Down the hall and to your left, but before you go make yourself comfortable. This is Kirstein, if we are ever in danger at the same time you will protect her before you protect me, is that understood?”
He looked at me then back at Devon, “crystal.”
“Good. Dismissed.”
Aubrey left the room without another word, “I wish Seth was like that.”
“He will be in no time.”
“You don’t know Seth.”
“True.”
“I have to go; I must brace Lacey for Seth and let her know what's going on.”
“ok.” He kissed my cheek, “until we met again Kirstein.”
I smiled and faded from his room into mine, “Lacey?”
*chapter 4*
“In here.”
I walked into the guestroom to find her on the floor doing yoga.
“You simply must try this, it’s so relaxing.”
“Well you might not be relaxed for much longer.”
“Why is that?”
“We will be having a guest stay here.”
“Whom?”
“Seth.”
Her face went from calm to scared, “Kirstein, he’s a vampire, my secret.”
“I know I spoke with my father who said that Seth already knew, And that my father would kill him if he breathed a word to anyone. Listen, since the scare earlier today with the wolves Sartor and my father want us both to have one guard at least and that’s all we have.”
“Ok Kirstein, if you think it’s safe.”
“It will be.”
She nodded her head and returned to her yoga, not speaking another word to me while her heartbeat continued to race. I wanted to sooth her mind, but thought some things she would have to deal with on her own; without vampire or witch powers. The door bell rang and Lacey looked up, “is that him?”
“no, a neighbor.”
“oh.”
I walked briskly down the stairs and opened the door; my neighbor across the street was standing there smiling.
“hello.” I said, trying not to sound alarmed.
“hi I'm Sarah Jenkins, from across the street.”
“I know who you are; you have children do you not?”
“why yes, three actually, um anyway I had come over because some people in the neighborhood thought they heard wolves nearby.”
“ok.”
“I am the head of the neighborhood watch committee and it is my job to inform all of the neighbors that we might have wolves in the neighborhood and that we will be having cops on patrol until we either find the wolf or it leaves.”
I thought about how I would have to thank Dante for bring cops into my town, and smiled at Sarah, “whatever you feel is absolutely necessary.”
“I do think it is. I, like many others, have children. I don’t know if you personally do, but for their safety-”
“I do not have children; I would be unable to know what it would be like to lose a child.”
She looked at me, the questions were building up I could tell, “well I just thought I should tell you.”
“thank you for doing so.”
“you’re welcome.”
“you will be on your way now.” I sent a thought to her mind.
She looked taken back for a moment then turned and walked away. I walked back upstairs thinking. How would I fix this one? How many cops will be patrolling? How can I feed now?
“who was it?”
“neighbor from across the street, cops will be in the town for a while due to some pesky little wolves.”
“lovely.”
I grabbed the hex bag that was in front of my door and threw it at Lacey, “what was that for?” she complained.
“keep it in front of your door. I will make a few more to cover your windows and one for my door.”
“why?”
“Seth is coming and he can’t enter without the hex bag being moved, and the only way for that to happen is for the owner of the room to move it or the witch who created it. I don’t want him in either of our rooms.”
“ok.”
I went into my room and grabbed 7 hex bags and the ingredients to go in them. I grabbed the last of my wolfs vein and divided it among the 7 bags. I also crushed up three Vervain, Nightshade, and Belladonna. I dropped in 2 drops of Jasmine oil and patchouli oil, I mixed these together until it was powdery looking than split it up among the 7 hex bags. I tied each one with a leather tie than concentrated on the leather, giving it the little bit of magic witch seal it needed. Before me I had seven extremely well made hex bags four of which were for Devon. I picked them all up and walked to Lacey’s room, dropping a bag by my door.
“Lacey.”
Silence.
“Lacey.”
Still nothing to be heard, I listened and heard nothing, not one human to be found in my house. This worried me; Lacey never left the house without informing me. I walked into her room and placed two hex bags at her windows, one at each than placed the rest in my pocket. I grabbed something of hers and concentrated on her, thinking in the mind of a human. I saw her in my mind, at a store of some sort, but I didn’t understand how she could have gone anywhere without me hearing her. I concentrated on this place and appeared before her.
“Kirstein, what are you-”
“how did you get here?”
“your mother gave me a witch’s glass.”
“how are you able to use it?
“what do you mean?”
“last time I checked you weren’t a witch or a-”
“your mother placed some magic on it, so you wouldn’t have to burdened by me every time I wanted to go somewhere.”
“Lacey you’re not a burden.”
“yes I am, and now I'm less of one.”
“Lacey, people know you as a vampire, how are you going to explain how you are able to use a witch’s glass?”
“why does it matter to others what I can and cannot use?”
“Lacey you know it does.”
“what do you want me to do?”
“give me the witch’s glass. I will give it back to my mother and take you where you need to go.”
She sighed, not willing to be defeated but she had to be. I grabbed hold of her mind and told her to do it my way. She was resistant, not wanting to lose her will power. Only problem was my will power was stronger, she soon gave me the witch’s glass and sat down. I sent the witches glass to my mother, using magic. I got a call instantly.
“why is this witch’s glass here?”
“you gave it to Lacey, I was returning it.”
“why?”
“mother Lacey is a vampire, not a witch. She should not be in possession of an item in which a witch uses. She will get into trouble; you of all people should know that.”
“you are the child; do not speak to me like that.”
“mother, it’s a fact.”
“fine.”
“I love you mother.”
“I love you too, be safe.”
“always am.”
I looked at Lacey, who looked like a lost little puppy. I grabbed her hand and took her home.
“Kirstein, I don’t understand.”
“what is it now Lacey?”
“why am I so tired?”
I looked away from her; she was tired because I continuously messed with her mind. I should stop but every time I do she listens better or it stops her from worrying. It makes everything easy for her and for me.
“I don’t know Lacey, maybe humans are like that.”
“if so, they must sleep more than the entire Order combined.”
“probably.”
I felt his presence before he even stepped foot into my town. I walked down stairs and opened the door, waiting for him to come. He was in front of me instantly, but he did not appear, he ran. He smiled at me and leaned closer, “Aww you were waiting for little o’ me?”
“no, your late.”
“Aww its ok if you were princess. You know you would rather marry me opposed to that vampire in Fagan.”
“your funny Seth and a coward.”
“why is that?”
“you choose to speak of Devon’s coven knowing full well I cannot speak about yours because it would be a betrayal to my father and MY coven.”
He looked down, he knew I was right and that is why he spoke of Devon’s coven. He looked back up and his smile was back on his face, “where do I sleep?”
“in the yard with the other dogs.”
“ow princess, that hurt.”
“follow me.” I turned on my heels and walked to the kitchen, “my kitchen, the living room is through that door. the bathroom is behind that door and the den is on the other side of the living room. Let’s go.”
I walked up the stairs and showed him the rest of the house, “my room, Lacey’s room.” I pointed, “you stay out of both of them, understood?”
“it helps me remember when you have hex bags in front of both and more than likely on the windows inside.”
“exactly, you will not enter unless we give you permission. You will not mess with Lacey’s head to do that either. I don’t want you or anyone to be able to get in, those hex bags are extra strength; no dog, vampire, or witch could get in.”
“good to know.”
“your room is at the end, the bathroom is the door before. Lacey uses my bathroom, in my room and doesn’t go to that bathroom so it is yours alone.”
“ok.”
He seemed to be listening but I highly doubted it. He wasn’t the type that listed to anyone other than my father, the higher ups and himself. His parents died in the last battle against the wolves, which was 2000 years ago. He was told to watch me and not leave me out of his site. He wanted to fight alongside his parents, and I think he blamed me for not being able to. They told him if he had gone he would have been killed as well, that he should thank my father for telling him to stay. He did, but gave me a glair that was colder than ice. I didn’t care that he didn’t like me, I saw him rarely after that. He had become a soldier and was always in training.
The thing no one understood was that four days before he was to graduate he dropped out. He told my father why, but swore him to secrecy. My father, once he is sworn, he doesn’t tell a soul, not even my mother. He takes it to his grave, I have told him many secrets and he has never breathed a word. He gives me advice on what I should do but never tells of what I have done. I respect him for that; I don’t think I could hold in as many secrets as he has.
“if that’s all you are going to show me.”
“o the basement down stairs, there is nothing down there but if you would like you can look there when you search the house every other hour.”
“excuse me?”
“yes, you will look through the entire house for anything, until I get bored of seeing your face every other hour. You will knock on mine and Lacey’s door and we will answer.”
“yes ma’am.”
“good boy.”
He rolled his eyes and headed down the hall to his room. I walked into my room and shut the door; I stuck my hand into my pocket and felt the hex bags.
Oh yeah, I thought.
I thought of Devon’s room and was sitting on his bed a moment later. Devon was nowhere in sight and neither was Aubrey. I listened to the downstairs and heard some rustling, but every move was too heavy too unorganized to be Devon. I thought it might have been Aubrey but he would be where ever Devon is. I pulled out the knife that I kept strapped to my thigh and concentrated on the noise and the room it was in. I had the knife held to his throat when I appeared, “who are you?”
“who are you?”
“I am the one with the knife to your throat, you answer my questions.”
He was built and at least twice my size. I cut his throat a little to show him I wasn’t playing; I would kill him as fast as I can think it.
“ow! Let me go!”
“Kirstein let him go.”
I looked over and saw Devon stroll into the room holding a cup, of what smelled like blood. I released him and he turned to look at me. It was Aubrey, he held his hand to his throat, the wound would heal quickly I didn’t know why he still held his hand to his neck.
“where were you?” I looked at Aubrey, “not much of a guard, are you?”
“I went to see where you were, but was unable to get into your room. So I knocked and Seth came to see what I wanted, I asked for you and when you didn’t answer we asked Lacey to open the door. she did and you weren’t anywhere to be found. Seth is looking for you right now actually.”
“he can worry for a bit longer.”
“Aubrey.”
“yes sir?”
“you didn’t hear or smell Kirstein at all?”
“I smelt her, but I figured she wouldn’t attack me.”
“I didn’t know it was you.” I smiled amused.
“what if it was another vampire wearing her clothing? What if she was going to kill me? Ever think of that?”
“no sir.” He grinded his teeth together, “I will be more alarmed from now on sir.”
“also you are to protect her at all costs am I understood?”
“yes sir.”
“good, dismissed.” He disappeared and left me and Devon to talk, “What did you come for?”
“I made your hex bags.”
“thank you.”
“you have four. One goes by your door and the others by your windows and other entree into your room.”
“ok, will you be able to come in?”
“I will have to appear in front of your door and move that hex bag; I can because I am the one who made it. No one else can move it, unless their human.”
“ok, um when you do, don’t stand in front of my door.”
I tilted my head to the side; a confused and questioning look was plastered on it.
“witches circle.”
“you are so protective.”
“yes, I don’t trust many.”
“I would do something similar except, I would forget where one was at and get stuck in it.”
He smiled, “very nice.”
“I have to go before Seth starts a search party.”
“until we meet again Kirstein.” He kissed my cheek and I disappeared in front of him and appeared in my room.”
I stepped out and into the hallway, “Seth?”
He appeared beside me instantly, his eyes were filled with anger and rage. He looked as if he was going to hit something, which was probable.
“where were you?”
“Devon’s.”
“you didn’t mention you were leaving because?”
“I didn’t think it would matter, I would have been back in a few minutes and I was entering a home that was also protected by a guard.”
“a guard that is supposed to protect Devon, not you.”
“Devon told him to protect me at all costs.”
His balled his hand into a fist, I heard bones crack before he swung back and busted a hole in my hallway wall, “you tell me when you leave, you tell me where you’re going, I come with you every time all the time. Is that clear?”
I raised an eyebrow and looked at the hole in my wall, my eyes narrowed and I held nothing back, “you listen to me, you will fix my wall, you will not tell me what to do, you will do your job or be replaced, you know when I leave and you will follow me, mess up my house again and there will be hell to pay. Is that clear?”
“yes ma’am, one question though. How do I follow you if I don’t know where you’re going?”
“I will tell you where I am going, if I don’t need protection you will stay here with Lacey.”
“I am supposed to go everywhere with you.”
“fine.”
“I'm going hunting.”
“I guess I am too.”
“I don’t need you to watch me while I eat.”
“why do you try my patience Kirstein?”
“because it is fun.” I flashed my fangs then disappeared. I appeared on my porch and scanned the area. It was about 4:30 in the afternoon, I masked myself before revealing myself to the public eye. This power is one that not many vampires use; they usually don’t care if their victims know that they are there. They would kill anyone who was a threat to their lives or they would just scramble their brains a little to make them forget. I use this approach because it’s a lot easier to find prey and not scared my neighbors.
There were many people out and about and I just had to wait for a small opening. I felt Seth’s presence beside me, but when I looked he was not there anymore. The thing about being in this state, this mask, is that other vampires can see you but the humans cant. So if a vampire wants to mess up your kill they get to them first.
Seth is no exception. He stood behind a man and child and pointed at them, then looked at me. I shook my head back and forth, telling him no. but he nodded and went to attack. I did it before I thought and unmasked myself, “Help!”
The little boy and his father looked at me, the man picked up the kid and ran toward me, “miss are you ok?”
“no, no I'm not. I saw a wolf and I don’t know I screamed and it ran away I think. I don’t know what to do.”
“ok ma’am calm down. I don’t see the wolf around, um are you injured?”
“a little bit.” I gasped and shook, as if I was frightened.
“where, I am a doctor, well pre med student, I can help.”
“um the back of my leg.”
“let me take a look.”
He placed his son to the side and in the same second I cut the back of my leg slightly. He turned back to me and I showed him my leg.
“did the wolf do this?”
“um no, I did. I always carry a knife on me, for protection and a went to pull it out and it cut me.”
“your leg will be fine, I say get it washed and wrapped, I'm sorry though your pants won't make it.”
I smiled, amused, I did not know this human but I could see him as a potential acquaintance, “that’s fine; I will find a new pair.”
“I'm Keith.”
“Kirstein.”
The little boy nudged at Keith’s leg, “I'm sorry this little rug rat is my cousin, Timothy. Say hello Timothy.” I had been mistaken to think he was the father, they looked so much alike.
Timothy waved to me, too scared to say hello. I gently went into his mind and found out why. Little kids have a knack for knowing when someone is bad, or the supernatural in play. I soothed his fears of me and imprinted new thoughts and reactions to me. When I was done the little boy smiled and was calm.
Keith was talking about something that I was responding to but was unable to focus on. When I tuned back in I was surprised to see that he had invited me to dinner later and I humbly accepted. I cursed my inability to focus on a conversation and fix someone’s brain at the same time.
“where are we meeting at again?”
“the little restaurant around the corner at 7:30.”
“ok, see you then. I had better get this wrapped.”
“oh that’s right. See you then Kirstein.”
“yea, see you.”
I waited for them to walk away before healing the wound, then fixing my pants with magic. Seth walked over to me, anger and rage back in his eyes.
“why?”
“I told you not to, you were going to disobey.”
“so what.”
“I don’t kill children; the cops would never leave if you did.”
“There is something more to this.”
“no there is not.”
“yeah there is, who does he remind you of?”
“who?”
“the child, the guy. One of them remind you of someone.”
Seth was smart, I would give him that. They both remind me of Justin, the older cousin, Keith his looks, everything about him; Justin was tall, brood shoulders. His hair was an auburn color that most vampires and humans would kill for, it slightly fell into his eyes, his hair was always chaotic but it suited him. His eyes were, in human form a dark shade of blue, but as a vampire they were strong and dark, and you could tell just from his eyes that you didn’t want to mess with his coven. He was as friendly as could be but strong and fierce when he needed to be. I saw all of this in Keith and so much more, his hair color and eye color nearly matched. I had taken a look inside of his mind once or twice and discovered his wants and dreams, his fears and needs. Why he was always watching over his cousin and never let him out of his sight, never again would he make a wrong choice like he had done in the past.
Timothy reminded me of well me. He was the younger cousin who was always looked after by the older one. Timothy had Keith’s hair color and shade of blue eyes, except his were fearful and nervous. He didn’t trust many people and talked only when he had to. The boy was a nervous wreck, but I knew why. Timothy lost his mother and father in a fatal car crash and than last summer his older sister in a car crash as Keith was driving. It wasn’t his fault but he blamed himself for taking another life from Timothy’s life. Keith had his car tampered with and unfortunately Chelsea paid the price. Timothy has been almost silent since then. He only talks to Keith and his dead parents in prayer. I found this out by scanning both of their minds a few weeks ago. I found out more information looking at Timothy’s mind earlier.
I saw my cousin and myself when we were younger. So carefree, so happy, I hated Kevin for killing him. I hated Keith and Timothy for having a relationship I could no longer have, but despite it I still would protect them and let them live the life I was unable to have with my cousin. I loved Justin and miss him deeply, I could not take another life from Timothy and I wouldn’t let Keith worry himself to death by losing Timothy. I don’t enjoy killing children, but I do if I have to, and right now I don’t have to.
I looked at Seth and simply replied, “those two are not to be harmed, you don’t know the full story and you won't know the full story. My father knows and I have sworn him to secrecy. You better than anyone should know the price for my father’s secrecy. Leave them alone or you will have to face my father’s wrath and mine.”
Seth turned back to Keith and Timothy then looked at me, “you must care fondly for these two or you care fondly for the memory they give you. I will not harm them, but if they get in the way…”
“I will deal with them then.”
“ok.”
“I'm not hungry any longer.”
“I am, is there any others I am unable to touch?”
“no children, anyone else is fine.”
“ok.”
I appeared in my room and threw myself onto my bed; I shoved my face into my pillow and began to weep. All vampires can weep, they weep tears of blood; all witches can weep as well, they cry tears of salted water. I cry tears of both, its abnormal to see in the mirror but all it is are my tears showing what I truly am inside. Half vampire half witch, I cry from one eye blood and the other salt water. Only a few individuals and my parents have seen me cry, and my parents didn’t mind the non identical twin tears, falling from my eyes all they knew was that their child was in pain. When I come of age my tears will become fully bloody and the salt will slowly fade away, as for now I cried and showed no hopes for stopping soon.
*chapter 5*
“Kirstein? Are you ok?”
“I’m fine Lacey, just tired.”
“are you sure?”
“positive.”
“ok, are you hungry?”
“no, what time is it?”
“7:15.”
I had to show up, if I didn’t then he would come over and question and that would be unwanted attention. I had to get ready, and then tell him we could be friends nothing more.
This is why you do not associate with humans, I thought.
“you could just mess with his mind; make him forget that he asked you dinner.”
“why are you in my head Seth?”
“giving you ideas.”
“I could, but then I would have to mess with Timothy’s mind also.”
“you had no problem doing it earlier.”
“that was different.”
“no, you messed with it so he didn’t fear you.”
“yeah, but-”
“it’s the same trick.”
“my magic is not a trick.”
“you call it what you wish.”
“enough of this!”
I sent my mental shields up and sent a shock straight to his. I heard him hit something to direct the pain somewhere else, unfortunately that doesn’t work. The pain is in your head you cannot transfer it somewhere else. I thought about what he had said, and he was right I could do that, I probably would do that, and make it seem like he was meeting someone else. He was attracted to me because I'm attractive, all vampires are, and just because I am half witch doesn’t mean I didn’t get those genes.
Vampires are beautiful, because it makes humans easier to get. If they think we are attractive and worth paying attention to, they trust us that much faster. Then we mess with their minds a little, than drink. It is a very simple process, and always very effective. I walked to my window and looked for his house, it wasn’t hard to find, his thoughts were so different from others that he was easily found. I reached inside of his mind and began moving things around, I was no longer going to meet him, Alex was. His friend from high school, they would be able to catch up since they haven’t seen each other since last school year. Also doing it this way insured he would tell Timothy that I was unable to met and instead he called Alex.
Now I had to find Alex, who also wasn’t hard to find. Keith talks to very intelligent people. Alex is going to become a lawyer, and from looking at his ethics he will do it significantly well at it. I moved some stuff around in his mind which was essentially having him call his mother and ask her if they could move their plans to a later time. She fortunately said that the switch in times would benefit her better. Now I was out of Keith’s mind, out of his plans and once again out of his life. I was, like before, silently watching from the sidelines and not prying into human affairs.
There was a soft tap on my door, I turned and lightly jumped from where I was at to the door. I opened it and looked into the hallway; Seth was standing there lightly leaning on the wall.
“what?”
“is the wall to your liking?”
I looked at the wall he had damaged, it was well repaired but still somewhat noticeable, “that will do.” I waved my hand at the wall and it smoothed out and blended in once more.
“you could have done that the entire time?”
“yes.”
“why didn’t you? Why make me have to repair your wall when you tricks could have fixed it faster?”
“because, you never would have learned.”
“learned? Learned what?”
“not to damage my house.”
He sighed and walked down the hall without another word. I walked to my bed and slightly waved my hand behind me, shutting the door. I sat on my bed then laid down, I was tried and extremely thirsty, but the thirst would have to wait until a later time. I shut my eyes and hoped I didn’t dream, I was unsuccessful and dreamed a memory that I hated worst than my cousin’s death… my aunt’s execution.
The moon was bright, almost as if the sun was out at night. My aunt and I were walking down an alley, not something we feared. She was pure witch and I was half, I was learning things from her my mother dared not teach me. She never showed fear because she had nothing to fear. Three guys came into the alley then, Two behind us one in front. I looked over my shoulder than whispered to my aunt.
“we shouldn’t be here, let’s go now.”
“don’t show fear.”
“I don’t, I also do not wish to start a conflict for no reason.”
“trust me.”
I shook my head and continued to walk; the man in front of us slightly bowed his head and continued to walk. The two behind us waited for the man to pass them before speeding up their pace.
“they are gaining speed on us.”
“just continue walking Kirstein, if they choose to make a move it will be the last one they do. But you must promise me something.”
“which is?”
“if they do make a move, you do nothing. Let me handle it.”
“but aunt Rebecca why would I leave you to handle two when I can handle at least one of them.”
“you will do nothing Kirstein.”
“fine.”
They made their move and my aunt took care of both of them, but the man who had past us before saw her use her magic. He ran and took the information to someone that would listen. They found us shortly after that, and pulled me away.
“which one was the witch sir?”
“the older one, the younger one looked on in horror.”
“is this true?” the man asked me, “you are not a witch and were surprised when she began to use magic.”
“I am,” I looked at my aunt, she pleaded to me with her eyes not to tell them who I was, what I was, “I am not a witch.” I obeyed her last wish, understanding now why she didn’t want me to do anything to assist her.
I watched as they dragged her away. She looked at me and I felt a soft pressure against my mental shields. I dropped them and she was there, in my mind.
“little Kirstein, do not fear.”
“aunt Rebecca why would you do this?”
“to save you child. We will meet again.”
“when?”
“I don’t know, sometime in the future. You must do one more thing for me.”
“which is?”
“you must go to my home and take everything of a witch’s worth and take it to your house.”
“why?”
“I leave it all to you. You will find everything easily, keep it all.”
“ok.” I nodded my head, “I love you Aunt Rebecca.”
“I love you too Kirstein, oh one more thing.”
“yes?”
“take everything else and get rid of it, if it is worth money on the black market sell it. Everything except the ruby necklace in my jewelry box that you must keep, it is for you.”
“ok.”
“I love you child, stay safe.”
“I love you too.”
That was the last I saw of my aunt until the execution. I was there because no one else from our coven would. They said it was a horrible death why would they watch it. I would be there for my aunt in her final hours of this life. I watch her hanged and then they took her away, they were not done with her, they will burn her later. I said a small witch’s prayer and went to her home to light a white candle. I took everything that would be of worth to a witch and the necklace and left, someone from the coven will sell the rest. I left the house and did not return.
I woke up from this dream in a cold sweat, breathing hard and irregular. I turned over and saw Lacey sitting on my couch.
“what do you need Lacey?”
“I'm sorry to be in here but um.”
“what's wrong Lacey?”
“you were frightened.”
“of what?”
“I don’t know whatever you were dreaming of.”
“why do you say that?” I said, sitting up in my bed.
“Seth heard you.”
“heard me what?”
“heard that you were restless. He knocked on my door and asked me to open your door, I didn’t understand why until I did.”
I looked over at my door; Seth was standing in the doorway unable to get any closer because of the hex bag. He was leaning against the door frame looking at me.
“thank you Seth.”
“you’re welcome.”
“what was this dream of yours?”
“a memory, I'm fine now.”
“are you sure?”
I looked at Seth then back at Lacey, “I'm fine.”
She nodded and then got up, “Seth let’s leave Kirstein to get dressed.”
“alright.”
They walked out, Lacey shutting the door behind them. I pulled the blanket closer to my face, biting my thumb. Restless while I'm asleep? I haven’t been like that in years. What was it in these dreams that frightened me so? I have relived them countless times and never have been told I was restless. I looked at the clock and sighed, I must get ready.
I took a shower and got dressed; I was in a black pair of fitted jeans and a dark purple fitted muscle shirt. I grabbed my aunt’s ruby necklace and put it on, it slowly began to turn purple and before long was the color of my shirt. Her ruby, I found out after wearing it the first time changes colors with my clothing. It is enchanted, but I still don’t know the purpose of the gem. I wear it because my aunt asked me to, and I have almost every day since she gave it to me.
“Lacey are you ready?”
“yes. Seth are you ready?”
“ready for what?”
“human school.”
“why do I have to go?”
“you must protect us.”
“I’ll get ready.”
It is rare for a vampire to go to school. After doing it once you don’t want to go back repeatedly for all eternity. This is my fourth time going back to high school since 1880. I figure every 40 years or so I need to be brought up to date on technology and new discoveries. Seth more than likely hasn’t been back of hundreds of years.
He was quickly changed and was waiting for us downstairs, “so how do we get to this school?”
“drive.”
“drive?”
“yes it’s something new the humans came up with.”
“I know what it is; I'm asking if you know how.”
“of course I do. So does Lacey and Devon, this is what happens when you live outside of the Order, you learn things.”
“fine lets go.”
We walked outside and to the garage. We may not have cell phones and iPods and stuff but I do own a car. It’s not nearly as fast as appearing in places but it keeps the humans from suspecting too much. I had a crimson red Porsche, the windows were tinted black; humans were unable to see in, that is the way I liked it. People that saw my car knew who the driver was; I was the only one with this particular car in 500 miles. It has been driven a few times around the neighborhood and to and from school.
Lacey went every day while I went every few days. Sometimes more sometimes I didn’t go for weeks on end. I was easy to change the out days to avoid contacting others. Seth would now be coming so we would both have to be going semi regular for a few weeks. There were a few others at our school from the Order and from other places. We talked to them but otherwise avoided talking to anyone else.
When you make friends its harder to leave one place after its been too long. You are more tempted to tell them our secret and betray the Order’s rules. I choose to not make contact or make as little contact as possible. There are those who ask questions and those who think about asking you but I ignore it, usually. If I am having an off day or it’s something that disgusts me I will take matters into my own hands. I rarely fight, mostly because those who are stupid enough to try I either mess with their minds or win the fight, which sends the message to those who wish to try. I have fought five times here, and won every fight. A few wish to challenge me again but choose not to for fear of their pride.
Three of the five were bigger than me, height wise and weight. The fact that I am strong enough to fight a thousand men at once easily is no advantage to them. This also scares away any potential love interests, that and Devon. Devon comes to school as frequently as I do but seems to only go because of me. He hates humans; he doesn’t understand why they are here besides as food and why he must hide his true existence. He is the only one that I know personally, that doesn’t change his eye color in front of humans. He also tries to stay out of human’s heads as much as possible. They disgust him, the boys only think of girls and sex while girls think of everything at once.
We got in and I pulled out of the garage, I sped to the first stop light. I saw Keith, out of the corner of my eye; he was walking with Timothy toward the elementary school. I had a love for him, but it wasn’t a romantic love, more of a friend and a remembrance. I waited for them to finish crossing the street and then began to drive again, not waiting for the light to turn. I always sped in this town, I never get caught; one because I mess with their minds to have them leave and two I keep a sharp eye out for their static radios. I arrived at the school in about ten minutes when, driving at normal speeds, it would have taken twenty.
We got out of the car and everyone’s looks were already on us. I took a quick glance in everyone’s mind and had many outcomes. Boys’ wanted me in their beds while the girls despised me, but many of the girls were wondering who the guy next to me was. I looked over at Seth, from the look on his face he had done the same thing I had done. I walked toward the office, Seth and Lacey at my flanks, passing the unintelligent boys and despicable girls.
I opened the office door and stepped inside. The lady looked up and smiled, “how can I help you?”
“this is my cousin, Seth Knightley; he is new and needs a schedule.”
“has his parents called him in?”
“no, they filled out the paper work though.” I said, handing her an envelope.
She took it from me then opened it; she scanned the information on each page then looked at us, “everything seems to be in order.”
“lovely, add him into your system so we can go.”
“it’s not that easy, it will take a few days.”
“no, now.”
The smile faded from her face, “it will take a few days.”
“I wish to speak with someone else, someone with more experience in adding some information into a computer and printing out a schedule.”
She became irritated and stood up, “leave the office now.”
“or what?”
“or I will have you suspended.”
I felt pressure in the room, I looked at Seth, he was concentrating on the office assistant. She had settled down and began typing things into the computer, shortly after that she handed Seth a schedule, “welcome to Jefferson high school.”
“thank you.” Seth said.
As we turned a small group of girls dispersed into little groups and walked away.
“looks like you have fans.”
“silence Kirstein.”
“I'm just saying.”
“well don’t.”
We walked out and began down the hall. I caught a glimpse of a group of guys talking about me; I quickly glanced into their minds and saw what they wanted to do to me. I shuddered as I heard Devon stepping up to them. I turned around and saw the terror on their face and the annoyance in his voice; this is what I love about him, this pure rage and protectiveness. He looked at me and smiled, I gave him a quick little flash of my fangs. He mouthed out “later” and I nodded smiling. I continued walking with Seth and Lacey until we got to the cafeteria, I knew Devon would be in there shortly and would find us.
We walked over to a table and sat down, there was one other person at the table and they quickly got up and left. Devon was at my side shortly after that.
“you know you didn’t have to.”
“yes I did, did you not see what they were thinking?”
“yes I did every part of it.”
“so I took care of it.”
“lovely, so Devon does that mean you are also a freak of this high school?” Seth said.
“what does that mean Seth?”
“I mean are you like Kirstein where everyone is afraid of you?”
“Seth do you side with the humans?” Devon said annoyed, beginning to raise his voice.
“no, I just don’t understand why you come to one of their schools when you don’t want to learn anything besides technology and what they have discovered. Read a book about it if you’re interested.”
“why do you care? Why do you care about such an insignificant being on the earth?!”
At this point a few tables were looking at us, a few of them other witches and vampires.
“apparently they are not so insignificant for you to feed on.”
Devon stood up and I grabbed his arm, “enough, this is not the time or place.”
“tell your fiancé that.”
Devon slammed his fist on the table, creating a dent and walked away.
I looked at Devon who was leaving the building, people moving out of his way to give him room, and then back at Seth, “why would you do that?”
“I was just asking a question.”
“you know he doesn’t like humans.”
“that’s not what I asked.”
“we don’t involve ourselves with humans, if you want to that is your choice, leave our decision out of it.”
“you don’t mind what I do to these humans?”
I looked at him, he was baiting me in for something, “the humans at this school no, Keith and Timothy yes, Children in my town yes.”
“fine.”
I got up and so did he and Lacey, “stay both of you, that’s an order.”
“but Kirstein-” Lacey said.
“Lacey you may go, Seth you will sit at this table until I return or until the first period bell rings, am I clear?” He shook his head but did not move, “good boy, oh and while you are here, fix the mess which you have now made.”
I walked outside and looked for Devon; he was sitting beneath a tree. I walked over to him, his eyes were closed and his head rested against a tree.
“Devon?”
“Kirstein, go away.”
“Devon, your fine.”
“leave Kirstein.”
“and what leave you here to kill anyone who sets foot near you? Not going to happen.”
“he annoys me.”
“he does it because he can’t have me and you have me.”
“that can’t be the reason.”
“trust me when I say it is.”
He looked at me then sighed and stood up. I wrapped my arms around him and kissed his cheek.
“you will rule an entire coven that will make you upset, you cannot let one person get you enraged and leave. You must control that part of you.”
“You’re right.”
“when am I not?”
He smiled and we walked back into the cafeteria, the murmurs of all the humans stopped and so did most of the others. I looked at a table that was usually covered with vampires and witches, instead it was completely empty. I looked at Seth, who was still sitting were I left him, except he was with four other girls; two of which were witches. I walked to the empty table with Devon and sat him down; I walked over to Seth and placed a hand on his shoulder.
“what are you doing?”
“the girls thought I looked lonely. They wanted to keep me company.”
“oh really?” I looked at the girls, “you are dismissed.”
The human girls looked confused and the witches were mad. I felt an amount of pressure placed on my mental shields. I tilted my head slightly and sent a surge of energy back at both witches. One of them placed her head on the table and had her hands on her head; she was pushing against her temple to stop the pain. The other one was cringing and trying to focus on me, I had momentarily blinded her. They got up and staggered away and the humans left seconds after that.
“why did you do that? I was enjoying talking to them.”
“because I needed to talk to you, did you fix everyone’s heads?”
“I didn’t know that they were broken.” He smiled.
“you know what I mean.”
“all except some vampires and one witch.”
“how many vampires?”
“four, they were strong and wouldn’t let their shields down.”
“why didn’t you just brake them?”
“because I couldn’t.”
“you are so weak.” I walked away and grabbed Devon’s arm, “I need you.”
“ok.”
Seth got up and followed us out of the school, “where are you going?”
“I'm doing something.”
“what is it?”
“a spell.” I looked over my shoulder and saw two humans. They looked at me with questioning looks on their faces; I smiled and showed my fangs. Those two in particular both thought I was a witch, I loved messing with their minds and making them look crazy. I found it humorous that they were right about me, but no one would believe them.
“no, no spells.”
I stopped in my tracks and turned around, “excuse me? Who are you to tell me what I will not do?”
“your guard, I fixed everyone’s minds that I could. All humans have forgotten if these few say anything they are revealing their own secrets. They wouldn’t do that, as long as the damage is fixed.”
“Seth you try my patience.”
“you try mine, I don’t understand you two. You love humans for what they give you, but you don’t love them for what they can offer you?”
“which is what? Tell me what these great humans can offer me.”
“knowledge.”
Devon began to shake and clench and unclench his fists, he closed his eyes trying to keep calm. I grabbed his arm and pushed him backwards a step; now I was between them, sort of. Seth began to smile, amused at how easily Devon got irritated.
“Seth, leave. You are relieved of your guard duties.”
“sorry I can’t leave until this wolf’s thing is cleared up.”
I turned and placed my hand on Devon’s chest, I pushed him backward as I walked forward.
“good bye, Kirstein and Devon. See you later Kirstein.”
“bye Seth.”
“I will tell the humans you were too anxious to eat them to stay.”

I really like this story so far. But there are a lot of technical but easily revised issues in this.
1. When you do your dialogue you don't capitalize the first letter of a sentence. And I don't know if it's just a trademark thing, but if it is, personally I'm okay with it and I think it's cool. But if it isn't, there's a bit of an issue.
2. I noticed some spelling mistakes while reading this. Like using the wrong yours and missing letters in words. But that's easily fixed, and there's a spellcheck option on the entry space before you post to help you with that.
3. Your dialogue was a bit repetitive at some points in the story. Just switch out some words and you should be fine.
4. I noticed some odd breaks in the paragraphs, but sometimes this site messes up formatting so it's probably not your fault.
Anyway, I really liked this piece and I can't wait to read more. You kept my attention the whole way through, and I love it. I also want you to know that those problems I found are pretty common in large pieces of writing because there's more room for error. And it by no means that this story isn't amazing.
My rating:4.99*s
I can't wait to read more!

Very interesting story, although I haven't been able to finish the whole thing yet--
There are a few grammar errors here and there, but to be completely honest, I do like this.
Some things I noticed:
Instead of an exclamation mark, you might want to use a question mark. It makes it choppy.
There are also some beginning sentences that should be capitalized, but all in all, this was an intriguing story. Looking forward to reading the rest.
