I wake up, drenched in sweat, my dampened hair stuck to my forehead. I peel off the blanket, feeling the cool wooden flooring beneath my feet. My knuckles go white from clutching the edge of the bed as the nightmare still echoes in my mind- flashing red lights and a cacophony of a jarring mixture of voices.
Hovering above me is a seven-foot tall, faceless creature - a heresy of nature - that seems to be made entirely of shadows. Its bulging eyes, devoid of humanity, glow red in the dark, and its features contort into a nightmarish grin. I’m petrified and glued to the spot in shock; every fibre of my being is screaming in terror, my blood frozen. The creature disappears with a blink.
"Relax," I tell myself, trying in vain to quell the burgeoning anxiety inside of me.
"Kareena? You're awake?" My brother's voice calls out from the corridor. He enters my bedroom, raking a hand through his hair. "I saw your bedroom lights were on. What's up?"
I pat the spot next to me on the bed, making space for him to sit down. "Nightmares again?" He asks empathetically. I nod, leaning a bit into him. He deftly pulls out something from his pocket and shows it to me. "What's this?" I ask, observing the small wooden box he has taken out. It's ornamented with arabesque carvings. It's stunning.
He says nothing, but instead opens the box, spinning the crank handle. "It's a music box," I whisper in awe, even before the music comes out.
A lilting, rhythmic melody trickles out of the box; the melody sounds almost...bittersweet. The mesmerising music begins cascading out in a deluge of notes, sending a shiver through my bones. The ballad weaves a tapestry of euphonic tunes seamlessly stitched together.
"I made this for you. I wanted it to be your birthday surprise, but this seemed like the right time to show it to you." He keeps the box aside and gingerly kisses me on the forehead before leaving the bedroom.
That night, I get the best sleep of my life.

Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening/Night(whichever one it is in your part of the world),
Hi! I'm Kate and I'm here to leave a quick review!!
First Impression
Well this was an unexpectedly sweet little scene. With how that started I thought maybe this would be a haunted music box or some terror but quite the opposite it would seem and we have a lovely wholesome moment.
Anyway let's get right to: Kate's Line by Line Reactions;
Well looks like that's a bit of a horrifying situation to be waking up to. Does not look good in the slightest. Just kicking things off with quite the diabolical bit of horror there.
Well looks like that was just a nightmare after all. Little sight of relief on that one. Things were definitely escalating quite a bit right there but it seems like its okay and she has a bit of support from her brother who definitely seem concerned about this happening before but at the same time also mostly not particularly concerned here.
Oooh well that's a genuinely seems to be quite the beautiful little thing there. Loving the description around it there and I think it captures it beautifully. A wonderful thing for sue after a terror like that.
Well this is a beautiful. A wonderful and thoughtful little gift by a very loving brother there and its wonderful calming nature seems to have kept the horrifying nightmares at bay there.
Aaand that's it for this oneee!!!
Overall
Overall I think its a beautiful little scene right here, a genuine moment of sibling concern and putting in quite a bit of work to them to then bring some comfort and as it works there, that's a beautiful little moment of happiness to reflect on I think.
As always remember to: Take what you think was helpful and forget the rest!

Hey fellow writer,
Alright, let's talk about this Wooden Music Box Surprise – a story that hits you right in the feels. First off, major props for the vivid storytelling. Waking up from a nightmare? Been there. Drenched in sweat, clutching the edge of the bed? That's some relatable writing. It's like the writer knows how to pull you into Kareena's world effortlessly.
The music box itself? That's a stroke of genius. The arabesque carvings, the crank handle, the whole deal. It's not just a prop; it's a character in the story. The description of the melody, though—absolutely spot-on. Bittersweet is the word. It's not just music; it's a mood, and the narrative makes you feel every note. The music becomes the heartbeat of the story, and I'm all for it.
Now, the brother? A surprise handmade music box for a birthday gift? Sweet, right? But here's the kicker—the timing. He pulls it out on a night when nightmares are doing the cha-cha in Kareena's head. That's some next-level brotherly intuition. The forehead kiss? Touché, my friend, touché.
But you know what bugged me? I wanted more details about the nightmare. What were those flashing red lights about? What voices were in that jarring mix? I get that it's about the music box, but a bit more nightmare juice could've added some spice.
Overall, though, I'm not just saying it—the story is a five-star rollercoaster. It's got emotions, surprises, and a musical twist that lingers. The only downside? Now I want a music box of my own. Keep spinning those yarns, storyteller! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Bye
Thank you so much! I really appreciate this feedback. Your review brought a smile to my face on a lonely evening
Have a wonderful day/night!
I am glad you liked it
Hi, and happy Review Day! I hope you're having a good one so far!
I really enjoyed the simplicity of this piece of flash fiction. You began with a goal in mind, and leapt straight into it, yet still managing to leave enough crumbs for the reader to piece together the circumstances. Your descriptive language also created a very powerful sense of place and emotion, and the shift of tone- from fear and anxiety to comfort- is done very well!
In particular, I liked the dynamic you created between these two siblings. It's difficult to get a reader to care about characters in such a short time frame, but through a small interaction such as this, you have us invested in their struggles!
I noticed a prior reviewer mentioned dialogue/paragraph breaks, and that you have cleaned it up a bit- which definitely makes your story a lot clearer and more impactful!- however, there are a few small inconsistencies that I'm gonna point out quickly.
First, in the second and third paragraph, the brother is speaking:
Because it's the same speaker, there doesn't need to be a paragraph break there. In fact, because of common writing conventions, it actually makes this interaction a little confusing on the first read through because we automatically assume that someone new is speaking, until we reach the dialogue tag "he asks."
Then again in the fourth paragraph, the narrator asks "What's this?" As the prior reviewer mentioned, there should be a paragraph break there, since someone aside from the brother is talking.
In the fifth paragraph, there's a similar issue. The same person is speaking again, so there shouldn't have been a paragraph break.
I think I made it sound a bit confusing, but to put it simply- add paragraph breaks when a new character is speaking, but keep dialogue from the same character together to avoid confusion.
But genuinely, apart from these formatting issues, this was an incredibly strong short story! I loved your descriptive language and your prose, and I really enjoyed the heartfelt message! What I find most impressive about good flash fiction is how writers can get their readers invested in their plot, characters, or world in such a short amount of time. In that way, I think you were successful.
So, with that all said, keep on writing, and have a great rest of your evening!
[center]Howdy hey! Gengar here to leave a review! I'm reviewing using the YWS S'more Method today!
(GREETING & INTRODUCTION)
Top Graham Cracker - What I Know
This story was rather short, but its length works well with the subject of the story. It gives off the vibe that we are looking into a snippet of someone's life
Slightly Burnt Marshmallow - Room for Improvements
I noticed that sometimes there are multiple characters speaking within one paragraph. However, this may confuse the reader as to who is talking. You can fix this by making paragraph breaks whenever a different character starts speaking. It would look like this:
Chocolate Bar - Highlights of the Piece
The initial description of Kareena's nightmare is very detailed and evokes the proper emotions. The same can be said for the description of the music box; I like how the description of the music itself is fluid and dynamic
Closing Graham Cracker - Closing Thoughts
Overall, amazing short story. I really enjoyed reading, and I hope my review could be helpful to you. Have a great day/night!

Thank you so much for the review! I completely understand the paragraph break part. I'll improve it!

Hello there, human! I'm reviewing using the YWS S'more Method today!
Shalt we commence?
Top Graham Cracker - Kareena has nightmares that make her toss and turn, but her brother has a special gift for her that will brighten her mood.
Slightly Burnt Marshmallow -At the end, you could write “got” instead of “get”. But it’s just an idea. You don’t have to listen to this.
Chocolate Bar -I love how it starts off with the main character being frightened, but then calm. It’s sweet how the brother cares for her. She has her own beautiful music box to calm her down. Kareena will be able to sleep soundly now. :>
Closing Graham Cracker -It’s a cute little tale about how one little thing can bring joy, no matter what it is. I enjoyed reading this.
I hope you have an amazing day/night!
Hi! Thanks a lot for the review! I was also contemplating whether to type 'got' instead of 'get', but decided to go with the latter as it matched the story's POV.
I really appreciate the feedback! Have a great day/night!
