Chapter 4 - I’m Miserable Because: I’m Always Betrayed
She lied. I couldn't trust her.
She began by asking me a bunch of questions about what it was like living with my parents, if I was happy, what kind of things I did during the day. She also asked me what punishment I got when I did something wrong, if my parents have ever hurt me, physically. The questions got weirder and more personal and I just wanted to get out of there.
At the end I felt like crying, and I was glad my parents have never made me go to a therapist. As she got deeper and more personal she asked questions about my sister. I barely answered them, only short little snippets of sentences. But then her questions shifted. She asked less about things and more about my feelings on things. I didn't talk, instead my nails were digging into my legs and my jaw was clenched. I kept trying not to cry and just breathe but it wasn't working. She kept pushing me but I wouldn't budge. Eventually she stopped, sighed, and told me that was her last question so I needed to answer it. I didn't.
She went to talk to my parents and I stayed in the kitchen.
~~~~~~~
When I came out my mom saw me first. My knees almost gave out looking at her. I’ve always been good at telling people's emotions, yet the only thing I saw in her was heartbreak. My father wouldn’t look at me, but still, I could see his face set in an emotionless mask. My parents' eyes were a mirror of my own. My eyes followed them as they stood up, heading for the door. What were they doing? I tried to say something but my throat was dry and I couldn't get the words out. All I could do was watch them as they left, one and then the other. The lady came back in after and sat down. "It's okay, I'm going to explain what's happening now okay?" I nod my head. "Your parents are going through a hard time and based on the answers we got, they are not well suited to be taking care of you anymore.” She didn’t say any of this in a comforting voice, or try to tell me that it was going to be okay. She didn’t do any of it, she just sat there, bringing my world to pieces, acting like what she was saying was a mere fact.
After that I kind of zoned out into my own head. I couldn’t understand what she was saying, because it made no sense. What did she mean by not well suited? What is going to happen to me? As if in reading my mind, she said: "....We will be putting you with another family. You will be going to another school too. We believe this is for the best." She smiles when she’s done talking, like all of this was good news. It’s not, so I don’t smile back.
It didn’t take me long to understand what she said. Her words registered loud and clear, like a bell ringing in my ear. I sat there sitting in my anger, holding it in, until I realized she expected an answer. "What do you mean I’m going to another family?!" I say, my words laced with the anger I was just holding in. "I'm not an animal! You can't just put me wherever you want! I'm fine living here with my parents!" I threw my hands in the air, I stood up, I paced around, trying to do something to convince her. I knew I sounded crazy. I knew my words were blurring together in my hurry to say everything, to get through to her, but I didn’t care. My parents may fight a lot, my mom may drink and cry too much, my dad may never look at me again, but I still love them. There used to be a time when they wouldn't fight, when she didn’t drink 2 bottles a day, when my dad’s eyes were filled with love for me. And even if that's not the case now, I had to fight, for them, for us, for whatever we have left.
I had tried too hard to hold onto that anger, but eventually it faded, and I fell back on the couch. All I managed was a whispered, "You can't just take me, right?”
Chapter 5 - I’m Miserable Because: Of Everything I’ve Lost
A loud knock on the door brings me out of my daze and back to the present.
"Ceirra, it's time to go. I need you to come out please." The sound of the life destroyer - as I've started calling her - just sickens me. She's destroying my life, hence the name. I know it was broken enough before but at least it was somewhat normal. I still had my parents, and my home. I was still going to the same school.
I bang my head against the door in response. A little gasp escapes her from the other side of the door. "Ceirra! Are you okay?" Like you care, a little voice inside my head says. I bang my hand on the door. "Can you please open the door, I just want to make sure you're okay. Please?" I hate the way she's talking to me, pleading, like I might do something dangerous. I hit my hand on the door again, harder. This time less for a response and more for my own amusement. Let her worry about me, the voice says again. And I agree with it, she deserved this.
The door knob starts jiggling, but the door stays closed. I locked it. My hand hits the door again, and I wait for her reaction. This is fun. I feel the vibrations on my back as she starts hitting the door, begging me to come out. She shouts to someone else to get help opening the door. I don't want anyone else to get involved too, so I scoot up, unlocking the door at the same time. She comes tumbling in, almost hitting me with the door. I scoot away in time, my back now to the tub.
"Geez, calm down. It's not like I'm doing drugs in here or anything." I roll my eyes and get up off the floor. By now my tears had dried and in its place was anger..
She lets out a deep breath and stands up, straightening herself out. "Come on, it's time to go." She motions to the other side of the doorway, waiting for me. It's no use trying to stay, she already told me they have people waiting if I don't come willingly to take me by force. I think that was my final straw with her. Nice people don't take others forcefully away from their families. She didn't take my family from me though, they walked away willingly. The thought strikes me like lightning and leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I immediately push it away, not wanting to have to think about that.
My footsteps sound heavy as I stomp down the stairs, grabbing my bags from my room. They had given me 30 minutes to pack everything I needed. I packed almost everything in my room, there wasn't much in the first place. Still, my room looked bare and naked without everything on the walls. Exactly how I feel right now. My fingers skim the walls for what I'm sure is the last time, and I walk away. Past the kitchen, through the living room and to the front door.
I stopped suddenly. Tears threatened and my throat felt clogged. "No," I say. I didn't want to leave and right then, I hadn't thought a mountain could make me move, let alone walk out that door.. For the uncountable number of times today, I was wrong again.
Two burly men took hold of me, each grabbing an arm and leg, and hauled me away kicking, yanking and fighting them in every way possible. The last thing I remember hearing was the sound of my own screams as my world was torn apart again.
Chapter 6 - I’m Miserable Because: She’s Not Like Her
When the life destroyer told me I was going to stay somewhere else with another family I thought she meant close by. Like one or two schools over, close by. 6 hours, that's how long we've been on the road. The car finally comes to a stop inside of a gate. Through the iron bars I can see huge houses lined up on a hill. Without being up close I could this was one of the rich types of gated communities. The kind I don’t belong in.
It wasn’t that I didn’t like it or anything, I mean the houses were huge, and really pretty. But to be honest, things like this always made me feel really insignificant. Even before the incident, my family was never rich. I thought we had been, cause it seemed we had everything, but as I got older I realized just how much we were struggling. When I was old enough I got a job, but it didn’t help much.
Sitting here, watching from the window I can't help but assess myself. How filthy I am, how bad my clothes are. The torn shoes on my feet, and the tangled mess of what I call hair on my head. I look out of place, like someone plucked up and put me here as some practical joke.
We ride up the long driveway before stopping in front of the biggest house. I survey it from my spot in the car. The house is a two story, maybe three. From where I sit in the backseat, their backyard looks huge, and I can't even see all of it. I hate how small this makes me feel.
I watch as the "life destroyer" walks onto the porch and rings the doorbell. The ring is a fancy version of wind chimes. I hear a bang come from inside, along with the clicking of heels until, eventually, the door opens revealing a wealthy dressed woman.
She's wearing a tight pencil skirt that shows off her legs and white blouse. The heels I heard earlier are six inches high, I don't know how she hasn't broken her neck in those things.
"Hello?" Her voice is high and is the picture of confidence. Just the way she stands seems so strong and so sure. I think back to my parents, comparing them. I immediately feel horrible, for thinking badly about them. Maybe they weren't great, but they were my parents, I should be grateful. I should love them so much for everything they've given me. Sitting here though, seeing this woman who has her life together, I can't help but wish I had a mom like her. Someone normal and put together.
"Hi, you probably don't recognize me, we spoke on the phone. I'm Dorothy, from Eddison High School with social services."
I look up only slightly at 'the life destroyer.' Dorothy huh. Such a nice name for such an evil person. I may know her name now but I still prefer to use the title given to her by me. She was the one who took me from my life back home.
Is that such a bad thing though? a voice in my head says.
YES! I scream at it, yes it is. I don't know what the thoughts earlier were about but they're gone now. I have my common sense back.
"Oh, of course," the lady says. She turns to look at me. "You must be Ceirra then. It's nice to meet you." Her voice is still firm, I can't hear any type of pity or sympathy in her. I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing.
I step out of the car, stopping at the steps into the house. Looking up at her, I nod. "You too." I say. Her face forms a tight smile and she glances away from me. "Well, I guess you should come in then and get settled."
She retreats back into the house leaving the door open for me to follow.
Hi there! I'm reviewing using the YWS S'more Method today!
Wowie wow WOW. Once again , this is an AMAZING chapter that just had me going wow the entire time. It's clear that you're talented- very talented.
Top Graham Cracker - What I Know
What I can tell from this chapter is that the Dorothy (aka Life Destroyer) asks the main character a lot of questions. After a while, it turns out that she's taking our main character to a different house.
She's having a hard time after that. She cries and cries before it turns out that
She comes to a huge mansion where a strict-looking woman comes and takes her inside. And then it's the end so far.
Slightly Burnt Marshmallow - Room for Improvements
Overall, I have to say that your writing has really improved! I didn't really find anything, other than in this part:
Here, you break up a new paragraph in the middle of a sentence. What would really help is if you split the paragraph at an earlier moment so this isn't just a huge big cluster of words here.
Chocolate Bar - Highlights of the Piece
I especially loved this sentence.
I especially loved the description here, how her parent's faces were emotionless masks. Good job!
Closing Graham Cracker - Closing Thoughts
Overall, this was once again, an amazing piece by you, and I absolutely loved it, good job! You are totally amazing at writing!
happy writing,
Hey there! I'm super pumped about this book and can't wait to share my thoughts on it. Hopefully, this review will go through
Gotta give you props for your awesome grammar and spelling skills. Your commas and periods are on point, which is seriously impressive. Your attention to detail is amazing and your writing skills are killer. Keep it up!
Compared to other books I've read, this one was a piece of cake to follow. The storyline was straightforward and easy to understand, which made it a really fun read.
I'm totally hooked on this book! The story just keeps reeling me in and I'm dying to know what happens next.
Sierra is such a cool character with a unique personality and a wide range of emotions. She feels like a real person!
That's all for now. I'm seriously loving this book and can't wait to read more.
Have an awesome day or night <3
Hiya! This is Orabella, here with a review.
I'm so glad you posted more of this story! I love reading it, and I love seeing where you're taking this. <3
Oh dear, this isn't looking good. Separated from her parents? I can't imagine what that must feel like. Of course, her parents weren't very good to her, but still. She loves them. I just hope they love her.
And I'm not sure if I trust this new foster mother. She seems priss and prim; not exactly ideal for a kid who's dealing with a lot. But maybe it will be good for her, who knows? I hope at least the school would be better. I thought foster kids are usually taken not too far away from their original homes, but then again, I don't know much about the foster system.
In the beginning, I think you accidentally split a sentence it two and separated them into two paragraphs. (That explanation didn't make much sense, but I hope you get what I mean. If you don't, tell me and I can try to explain it better.)
Anyways, I absolutely love this story so far! It gets more and more interesting the more I read it. I think your chapter titles are very clever, and I like that you use reasons she's miserable.
Don't forget to never stop writing!
