I Write
I write when I don't know what to say
when my head is too loud
and my heart is too full.
I write about people
I still think about
even when I pretend I don't.
I write about things
I should have forgotten
but somehow still remember.
I write when I'm angry.
I write when I miss someone.
I write when I don't understand myself.
Sometimes I write about love
sometimes about losing it
and sometimes I don't even know
what I'm writing about.
I just know
there's something inside me
that needs to come out.
Maybe I'll never be the writer
I once imagined I'd become.
Maybe I'll just be this girl
who keeps filling pages
with all the things
she can't say out loud.
And maybe
that's enough.
Maybe that's what writing is for.
To leave a little piece of yourself
somewhere in the world
and hope that one day
someone reads it
and feels a little less alone.

This poem feels really honest and personal. I like that it doesn't try too hard to sound poetic; it feels more like someone sitting down and finally saying what they've been keeping inside. The line “there's something inside me / that needs to come out” especially fits the whole idea of writing as a way to process emotions.

I also really like the ending. The idea that writing doesn't necessarily have to make you famous or turn you into the writer you imagined becoming, but can simply help someone feel less alone, gives the poem a meaningful purpose.

One thing I would critique is that some of the ideas are pretty familiar. Writing about being unable to say things out loud, missing people, and feeling less alone are all relatable, but they're also themes that appear in a lot of poems. Adding one or two oddly specific details could make this feel more uniquely yours. Right now, the emotion is strong, but a specific memory or image could give it more personality.

I also think the “Maybe I'll never be the writer / I once imagined I'd become” section is interesting because it introduces doubt about whether the speaker is actually a writer. That could be explored even more. It might make the poem hit harder if we got a glimpse of what that imagined writer was supposed to be like.

Overall, I think this is a genuinely heartfelt poem. It isn't bananas in the sense that it's trying to be wildly complicated or clever, and that's actually part of its strength. It feels simple, vulnerable, and believable. With a few more specific details, I think it could become even more memorable.

Thank you so much for taking the time to read it and write such a detailed review! I really appreciate the feedback especially what you said about adding specific details. I think you're right I tend to write more from the feeling itself and sometimes forget to add the little things that make it more personal. And I actually really like what you said about the writer I imagined becoming part. I think there’s probably a lot more behind that than I put into the poem. Thank you again this honestly gave me a lot to think about.

Perhaps it is better to wake up after all, even to suffer, rather than to remain a dupe to illusions all one's life.
