Playback Memories Prologue: Today

PreviousNext

I look around me.

The smiles, the laughter and the chitter-chatter. Everything’s too familiar to forget.

Nothing has changed.

The big, huge gate stood strong although it’s losing its polish.

The two fairy guardians still seem to watch over us.

The Circus Trio, never losing its sense of idiot icy and humor.

Our Head Mistress, Madame Carmela, has never stopped smiling.

Standing here renews a lot of memories.

The high school days seems like another lifetime to me.

A life full of fun, laughter, blushes, teasing, arguments, fights, pain, love and a never-ending supply of adventures and jokes.

But all you can see now is a 25-years old adult, desperately struggling for existence.

I close my eyes and inhale the scent of fresh roses, my favorites

“Still the same old roses, huh Sakura?” A male husky voice spoke.

I turn around and see him.

“Nicholas Scott,” I say softly.

That 15-year old boy with dark black hair, perfect black eyes, a normal nose, small lips, round face is evolved into a big, muscular, handsome and with even more breath taking features, a man.

“You look like…Sakura, I guess,” he slowly says.

“What did you say that?” I ask.

“’Cause the Sakura I knew never stared at boys,” he explains.

“Well, you’re a man now,” I reason with a laugh.

“And you’re quiet the woman I never imagined you to be,” he smiles awkwardly.

“Where’s the rest of-”

A pair of hand wraps around me from the back and pulls me into a tight embrace.

“The scent of Sakura Blooms is always so enchanting,” he speaks into my ear.

Only one person can say and do that.

“Xander Frost, you pervert get of off her!”

I see a paper fan coming my way and smacking Xander’s head.

“Ouch!”  He lets go of me and backs off.

I see her.

“No way, its paper fan girl, Samantha Blocks.” Xander says.

Sam looks at Xander, “Oh, it’s the…the pervert,”

“I can’t believe you still have the paper fan,”

“I can’t believe that you’re still so -”

“Amazingly handsome and charming?”

“No way-”

“Hey guys, it’s been 7 years and still…” I start.

“Exactly it’s been 7 years but I can never forget that day…” she says coldly.

Xander goes quiet. Nick and I sigh.

A moment of awkward silence passes. Nick breaks the silence.

“Have you guys seen Casie?”

Casie McGarden. The only reason for my miserable existence.

“I guess she’s not gonna turn up after all,” says Sam.

“Who’s not gonna turn up?” a sweet voice makes me turn and look at her.

Shoulder length black hair, scary red eyes and don’t forget the eye patch on her left eye. That’s Casie. Incredibly beautiful yet scary.

She comes and stands next to Xander who’s standing next to me. Nick looks at me knowingly. Sam just grins at Casie and for the first time Xander didn’t do anything perverted.

And me? What do I do? I stare into space, expressionless.

A laugh. That’s what snapped us out of the ‘jolly good’ reunion.

Nick jerked his head to the left. We saw Rose. Rose Clarkson, Nick’s high school crush. And from the way he’s looking at her, let’s just say he never got over his high school crush. And to ‘lighten up the mood’ Rose is walking towards us with a smile on her face, for which Nick will die for.

I look at Nick. He looked… nervous and has a stupid grin on his face.

“Hey guys,” Rose greets.

“Hey Rosie!” Sam says in her extremely energetic voice, holding up her paper fan.

“I see your obsession with paper fans hasn’t ended.”

“Uhh…” she laughs nervously.

“Forget her baby,” says Xander holding Rose’s hands, “Rose you look prettier than ever,”

As expected, the paper fan hit him hard on his head. Rose laughs.

“Hey Nick,” Oh no…

“H-hey Rose. How are y-you?” he always stuttered around her.

“I’m fine. So, what do you do these days?” she has to ask.

“I…I do something,” he’s probably lost in her eyes.

“Well, what is that something?” Oh, just stop you’re making him nervous.

Nick looks at me. Help me.

“Uhh, Rose, Nick, he’s a doctor,” I step in. Nick sighs in relief.

“Oh, I work as a vet ‘cause I love animals,” Rose says.

“Yeah, I-I remember,” Nick says.

“How pathetic,” Casie utters.

“Rose!” Michelle steps in and saves Nick’s day. As she waved goodbye and left we all hit the reality and went into dead silence mode. Tension hung in the air.

The tension gave in with the presence of Madame Carmela.

“I see you guys are finally here,” her voice soft and tired.

“Madame Carmela so good to see healthy and walking,” Casie spoke in her annoyingly sweet way.

“You’re beautiful as always Madame Carmela,” Xander comments, kissing her hand.

“Oh yeah, why don’t you go for Madame Carmela then?” Sam has to poke her nose.

“Why you...”

“It’s been 7 years,” Madame Carmela starts.

We all look at her in absolute silence.

“I’ve called you here for a reunion, to mingle after all these years.” She says and walks in through the big gates which had closed 7 years ago for us.

The Gates of Scared Heart Boarding Academy opens. Opens once again to welcome all of us.

I hesitate. Do I want to renew all those memories? Open those unhealed wounds to feel nothing but pain?

“You must face the truth no matter how ice cold or bitter it is,”

Madame Carmel’s voice spoke within me.

I see everyone going inside. Our entire batch which graduated that year.

I see Nick, eyes with lost hope.

Sam’s lips drawn into a thin line, an expression of betrayal all over her face.

Xander moving in with a sense of hurt and regression.

Casie’s wandering eyes disgusted at the pathetic lives of her former classmates.

They did not hesitate. Why should I?

I move in, as my high school days hit me like cream at first then jelly and lastly like an iceberg.

Deep down I know.

I know it's gonna hurt like hell.

Hey, it's Firedancer here and I'm going to do a review of your work. be warned it is mostly grammatical errors I will report.

"The Circus Trio, never losing its sense of idiot icy and humor." Idiot icy I'm assuming that you meant idiocy.

"But all you can see now is a 25-years old adult, desperately struggling for existence." You don't need to have an s at the end of years.

“What did you say that?” I ask. That would change to "Why did you say that?"

“I…I do something,” he’s probably lost in her eyes. Add a period to the end of something. And capitalize He's.

Casie utters. I think you might've meant mutters, as that sounds more natural.

“Rose!” Michelle steps in and saves Nick’s day. As she waved goodbye and left we all hit the reality and went into dead silence mode. Tension hung in the air. I am so confused by this. How exactly does Michelle step in and save Nick's day? Who is Michelle? You might want to reword it a bit better. And what is "the reality?" Perhaps elaborate on that. Your character is going from first person so use that to your advantage. It is okay to have the character wonder and explain things in their head.

I move in, as my high school days hit me like cream at first then jelly and lastly like an iceberg. This simile is a bit odd. I don't know if you intended to make it odd and stick out, because it certainly does. I don't know how anything can hit someone like cream or jelly. If you intended it to be a serious part, then I would reconsider using that simile.

I can also tell from your story that you must watch anime a lot, am I correct? If so, that is cool because anime is awesome! And for your first time writing I am impressed. Most first timers make way more mistakes than you have. Keep up the good work and practice a whole lot, because practice makes perfect! :) Also I really like your characters.

Thank you very much for the review. You're correct I watch anime. I love it very much. I'll do better next time. Anyway, thanks.

That's a lot of dialogue, sometimes when there's too much people get bored and stop reading. It was cool how you were able to give the characters personality without saying it straight out what they were like, it would have been nice to see some more action though. Also I am not much of a fan of present tense stories, but this was pretty good. Although sometimes you would accidentally slip into past tense. I do look forward to see what you do with this story and where it goes. I will keep reading, keep up the good work.

This was my first time writing. But I promise to improve and I'll keep your point in mind.Thank you very much!
