The Fairy Tail: Chapter 1

The Fairy Tail

This is a tale spun out of woe and created from bloodshed. This is a tale forged from the same cold sharp steel that makes a blade kill. This is a tale not to take lightly for it is a story that came from the depths of the earth and made its way all the way to the far outreaches of the sky. This is the tale of the fairy tail.

Chapter 1

Once upon a time there was a fairy that lived underground. This fairy decided that she wanted to see the world, so she left the dank tunnels underground and went outside. She flew along the small path that led to a nearby town.

As she flew, she saw a sight that she thought was rather strange. She saw a man in a strange suit prancing and dancing down the road with a wooden flute. The man was being followed by about sixty children aged between two to fourteen. She thought that this was a rather strange sight and decided to follow this flute man.

After a ways the man came to a large rock. He lifted the rock up and revealed that under the rock was a well and the well was full of water. He jumped over the well and all the children did the same. Unfortunately for them they did not have long enough legs to make it across so they fell in the water. The strange flute man then rolled the large stone over the well and started to walk away.

“Why did you do that?” Asked the fairy.

“Well.” replied the man, “The townspeople didn’t give me my money after I ridded the town of rats!”

“It’s not the children's fault!” the fairy exclaimed.

“Look into my eyes.” the man told the fairy, “Does it look like I care?”

The fairy waited a long time, staring into his eyes. When she spoke, she said “No.” in a small voice.

“Good.” the man replied, “Because I don’t.” And then he left the fairy waiting by the rock.

The fairy knew she couldn’t lift the rock because she was only four inches tall, but she tried anyway. She didn’t give up until several hours after the sun had gone down and she fell asleep.

When she woke up the bright sun was shining on her face. As she got up, she wondered how the sun could shine after the terrible thing that had happened the day before. Though she didn’t know it the fairy would be wondering that a lot in the near future.

The fairy got up and flew down the path. After a while she reached a big forest that was home to many creatures. When she flew into the forest, she heard indiscernible, frantic voices.

She flew on a little quicker and when she got closer, she heard them more clearly. It was a male voice and a female voice.

“Don’t kill me!” the female voice cried frantically.

“I don’t want to!” exclaimed the male voice. “But the queen has ordered it, and I must do as she says!”

What happened next is too horrible to describe what it looked like in words so I will just describe what it sounded like. A wet thunk, similar to that of a knife jabbing a watermelon. A dull thud, similar to that of an apple falling to the ground. A wet squish, similar to that of someone sticking a spoon into said watermelon and twisting it.

When the fairy came out from behind the bushes, she came across a horrible scene. There was a mangled figure on the ground that resembled a beautiful girl about seventeen. She had skin as white as snow and she was wearing a blue and yellow dress.

The fairy flew on into the woods wondering if the week could be any worse. Unfortunately, it could.

After a time, the fairy came across a small house. She heard arguing from inside.

“You took all the eggs!” shouted one voice.

“Yeah! Well you took all the bread!” screamed another.

“Yeah! Well You took the fairy tail!”

The fairy wondered why they had a fairy’s tail and why any fairy would give up their tail for any reason. She decided to go and ask the people in the small house. When she got inside, she saw seven dwarves. Three of them were fighting over some things that were laid out in the middle of the floor.

As soon as the dwarves saw the fairy, they stopped fighting. They all stood there staring at the fairy. They came to their senses when the fairy asked, “I heard you arguing outside and was wondering why you had a fairy’s tail?”

One of the three dwarves that was fighting replied, “Well, we were going to sell i-”

Another dwarf cut in and said innocently. “Oh, we were just going to take it to the fairy queen in hopes that she can put it back on the fairy that it came off of.”

“There isn’t a fairy queen” the fairy told the dwarf.

At this time the dwarf that had been sneaking around behind the fairy when she was talking decided to choose this exact moment to grab the fairy, stuff her into a large bag and tie it closed. The dwarf shouted excitedly “I got her!”

The fairy was too shocked to say anything, so she just listened.

“Wow! That old hag that lives in the candy house will pay us handsomely for a whole, live fairy!” Said the first dwarf excitedly.

“Or she could just turn us into frogs or something and then take the fairy.” grumbled a fourth dwarf.

“We won’t let that happen because we can have a few of us stand outside and only give the fairy to her when she pays us.” explained a fifth dwarf.

“Yeah, but she might just kill us after we get payed and then take the money back.” the fourth dwarf argued.

“We’ll have to risk it.” The fifth dwarf announced as if it was the end of the discussion.

The fairy suddenly started laughing hysterically. Maybe this was because she was shocked at the dwarves ideocracy, or maybe she was just bitter from the events that had happened earlier. Whatever the reason she said suddenly, “If you don’t let me out of here I will curse you all with bad luck for the rest of your lives dwarves.”

The dwarves all stopped talking and stood in silence for a few seconds. Finally, one of them said. “What was that?”

“You heard what I said” She retorted. “Actually, I will curse you, all your friends, and all your family. I’ll even curse all your belongings so that they will break or be destroyed in some way. If you don’t LET ME GO, I will do anything in my power to ruin your lives.”

“Ha! You think we believe you can do all that?” the fifth dwarf laughed. “We could just kill you if you tried.”

“I think you are underestimating my power.” The little fairy said cunningly.

The fifth dwarf walked up to the back that the fairy was in and leaned over so that he was close enough for the fairy to taste to putrid stench of his breath. “You want to know what I think? I think that you think we are stupid.” He whispered.

The fairy did think that they were stupid and, as it turns out, she was absolutely correct. They were stupid. They were stupid enough to think that they knew everything about fairies and not do any research whatsoever.

What the dwarves didn’t know was that there are three kinds of fairies, not one. The kind of fairy that our protagonist happens to be is a hill fairy. Hill fairies live underground and are capable of more magic than tree fairies and are capable of a lot more magic than sprites which is the kind that the dwarves were familiar with and have a lot less magical ability than other fairies.

Anyway, the dwarves didn’t let the little fairy out of the bag and the fairy, as always, was true to her word. She cursed them then and there. They didn’t know it at the time, but they were cursed. Then the fairy decided it was time to get out of the bag. She started clearing her mind so that she could focus on the magic.

Suddenly the door to the dwarves’ house crashed open and an old lady stepped through. “I sensed a curse from somewhere around here.” The old lady told the dwarves. “Do you know what it was?”

Dwarf number three started trembling. “M-m-miss Rosina. I-It’s nice to see you.”

Hello there! Maryah here with a review! This is an incredible interpretation of some classic fairy-tales (or should I say, fairy-tails :P) with an EPIC twist. I've never read anything like this before and I so greatly enjoyed reading it. I did have a few little comments about it, though. Okay, first paragraph AMAZING. I loved it, it really drew me into the story like a proper hook/prologue should do to your readers. However, there is this one little thing and that's the introduction sentence to the second paragraph, "Once upon a time." I do kinda feel like this is a slightly overused phrase but if you wanna go for an innocent, fantasy-type thing go for it! Like I said, it's just a phrase that is so often used it almost seems kinda worn out for me. Other than that, there's really nothing else I think you should change since everyone below apparently already beat me too the stuff that I was gonna say :D. Do we have a name for our narrator here? LOL Just a question. This story is so cool with a style that I've rarely ever seen used, CAN'T WAIT FOR CHAPTER TWO! (I'm dying with this cliffhanger here).

Thank you for enjoying my story! The fact that "once upon a time" is overused is precisely my reason for using it. It's the classic fairy tale beginning that almost everyone uses. And yes, the narrator does have a name, but you might find that out in another chapter.

Hi!
I like the title. Upon immediately reading it, I assumed it was a grammatical error, but it made so much more sense once I actually delved into the story!
To start, I love the little description you wrote before actually starting the chapter. I think it added to the story and helped the reader understand what was about to happen. It also helped to explain that the title was not a grammatical error.
Once the story starts, the reader is met with the classic "Once upon a time". Honestly, I think the "once upon a time" trope is a little played out- perhaps there could be a different phrase to use to introduce the start of your story.
Along the journey of reading, I noticed some minor grammatical errors, and here they are:
1)

The fairy waited a long time; staring into his eyes.
Perhaps a comma should be utilized here rather than a semicolon. A semicolon is used when both thoughts could act as their own sentence, and that isn't the case here.
2)
when the fairy asked “I heard
There should be a comma after "asked", to introduce the quote.
3)
the female voice cried franticly.
The correct spelling for the last word would be "frantically" rather than "franticly".
Another thing I noticed was the line
which is the kind that our protagonist happens to be,
and I don't think that referring to the protagonist as the protagonist in the story is productive. It sounds a little silly, and perhaps there could be a better way of announcing the fact that the protagonist is a hill fairy.
Other than those minor grammar issues, here are some things I really enjoyed!
1) I love this line,
As she got up she wondered how the sun could shine after the terrible thing that had happened the day before.
I think that thought could be applied to so many events that take place every day!
2) I love the way that you described the terrible event with just noises- that is something so new and interesting and I have never seen that before.
3) I love the wholesomeness of this story. A story about fairies is so nice, and I enjoyed reading something that was pure and not that dark for once.
All in all, I enjoyed reading this story and I hope to read more of it in the future! Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the feedback!

Hey there, @TheGreatBanana! It's @Vil, here with a review just for you!

What I Like
You've got a nice little cliffhanger at the end here, and I love cliffhangers!

What I Dislike

This is a tale spun out of woe and created from bloodshed. This is a tale forged from the same cold sharp steel that makes a blade kill. This is a tale not to take lightly for it is a story that came from the depths of the earth and made its way all the way to the far outreaches of the sky. This is the tale of the fairy tail.

I felt like this part here was unnecessary and slowed the reader down from the get-go. Personally, I would scrap it, but you might prefer to revise and/or reword it.

Instead of using the word "aging" in the second paragraph, I think you need to use "aged."

There are quite a few simple grammatical errors (extra periods, lack of commas) that could be fixed with you average free grammar checker. I would refer you to Grammarly, which is pretty good with grammar about 98% of the time.

There are in fact three different kinds of fairies. Hill fairies, which is the kind that our protagonist happens to be, tree fairies, and sprites. The kind of fairies that the dwarves were familiar with were sprites, which happen to be the least magical of the three. The hill fairies and tree fairies use a lot more magic and, although there abilities are different, they work together very well that doesn’t have anything to do with the story at its current point though because the nearest tree fairy was several miles away because the fairies had all learned to steer clear of the dwarves house.

This bit here was a bit of a plot dump, so some heavy revision should really help out. It also pulls the reader out of the story, especially when you say "which is the kind that our protagonist happens to be..."

I can't wait to read the next chapter!

Have a nice [*insert time of day here*]!!!

Thanks for the feedback!
